Switching away from OBS should not, by itself, take a YouTube Live stream offline. Treat the timing as a clue, not proof: check whether OBS stopped sending video, lost its connection to YouTube, or remained connected while YouTube ended the broadcast. The right fix depends on which of those happened.
First, identify which part of the stream stopped
During a controlled test, start a stream and switch to another application, then return to OBS. Watch OBS’s stream status, connection indicator and dropped-frame count, and check the live broadcast in YouTube Studio. Avoid relying on the coincidence between changing window focus and the stream ending.

OBS says intermittent disconnections generally indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. Its troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, identifies unstable connections and bitrate the connection cannot sustain as causes of dropped frames; enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. If OBS is dropping frames or disconnecting
Work through the connection path before changing unrelated settings. OBS’s suggestions focus on the ingest server, bitrate and software that may interfere with the connection.

- Try a different ingest server. If OBS lets you choose a server, test another available option and compare its connection behavior.
- Lower the video bitrate. Set it to a level your stable upload capacity can sustain. A bitrate that exceeds that capacity can lead to dropped frames.
- Check VPN and security software. Temporarily test whether a VPN or security application is interfering with the connection, following the software vendor’s guidance and your organization’s security rules.
- Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback. OBS presents it as a way to adapt to connection changes, not as a fix for the underlying network problem.
Make one change at a time and observe the result. If the stream still drops, note the time and what OBS reported so you can distinguish an encoder-output problem from a connection failure.
If OBS stays connected but YouTube ends the broadcast
Check the stream’s broadcast settings in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s encoder setup documentation describes auto-start and auto-stop: these settings allow starting or stopping a broadcast from the encoder. Confirm the settings on the specific stream, particularly if it is scheduled or reuses earlier settings. See YouTube’s encoder streaming setup guidance.

YouTube’s instructions say to end a stream by clicking End Stream and stopping content from the encoder. That distinction matters when diagnosing an apparent offline event: an encoder disconnect and an ended broadcast are not necessarily the same state. An older OBS forum guide discusses scheduled-stream reconnection behavior when auto-stop is disabled, but also says broadcasts may eventually end after multiple hours without input. If OBS itself stopped outputting
Check whether a control action or local OBS behavior stopped the stream. OBS’s overview documents automatic reconnect in Advanced settings and configurable hotkeys for starting and stopping a stream. These controls can assist recovery or help identify an accidental command, but OBS does not say that they make focus loss harmless or prevent YouTube from auto-stopping a broadcast. Labels can vary by installed OBS version. Consult the OBS Studio overview.
- Check whether a start/stop hotkey could have been triggered, including by another application or input device.
- Review OBS’s stream status and logs around the time output stopped.
- Consider enabling and testing automatic reconnect if your failure is a connection interruption; do not treat it as prevention for every kind of stream end.
Test recovery before an important broadcast
YouTube recommends testing encoder failover, monitoring audio and video, confirming that the event is viewable, and verifying that the local archive file is growing. These are safeguards, not evidence that changing focus caused a failure. YouTube also advises stopping the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. - Run a test stream and verify it from YouTube’s viewer side as well as in OBS.
- Check that audio and video remain present after switching applications.
- Verify the local recording or archive file is growing, if you are recording locally.
- Test your failover plan rather than assuming reconnect controls will recover every failure.
