For the part of a webpage currently on screen, press Windows key + Shift + S, select the area, then save the snip or paste it into your report. To capture the whole page, including content below the screen, use Microsoft Edge’s Screenshot or Web Capture feature and choose full-page capture. Both methods use built-in features, so this task does not require a special laptop or paid screenshot software.
Choose the capture that fits your report
| What you need to show | Method | What it captures |
|---|---|---|
| A particular section of a webpage | Windows key + Shift + S | A selected screen region; save the snip or paste it from the clipboard. |
| The whole visible screen | Windows key + PrtScn | The screen, including browser and desktop elements; saves an image in PicturesScreenshots. |
| Only the active window | Alt + PrtScn | Copies the active window to the clipboard; paste it into a document or image app. |
| A webpage that scrolls below the screen | Microsoft Edge Screenshot/Web Capture | A selected area or the full webpage, including content beyond the visible screen. |
For most report evidence, a selected area is the simplest choice. Include enough of the page to make the subject and context clear, but avoid unnecessary browser or desktop details. Use a full-page capture when content farther down the webpage matters.

Capture and save a visible section with Snipping Tool
- Open the webpage and position the relevant text or image on screen. Adjust the browser zoom if needed so the content is legible and enough context is visible.
- Press Windows key + Shift + S. Microsoft says this opens the Snipping Tool overlay. Choose a rectangular or other available snip mode, then select the area you want.
- If the Snipping Tool notification or editor appears, open it to review the capture. Save the image, or copy it and paste it into your report. Microsoft’s Windows guidance describes saving in PNG or JPG and copying and pasting captures.
- Give the saved file a descriptive name, such as project-source-overview.png. Check the image at the size it will appear in the report; small text that looks clear on screen may be hard to read once resized.
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guidance documents the shortcut and capture options. For additional Windows 11 save and copy guidance, see Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions for Windows 11.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCapture a whole scrolling webpage in Edge
- Open the page in Microsoft Edge.
- Open Edge’s Screenshot or Web Capture feature using the browser’s available menu or control.
- Choose the full-page capture option for the entire webpage, or choose the selected-area option if you need only part of it.
- Review the result and save it or copy it into the report using the options shown by Edge.
Edge describes its capture tool as able to capture a whole webpage beyond the visible screen or a selected area. Menu labels and availability can vary by browser version. See Microsoft Edge’s Screenshot Tool feature page for the feature description.

Other Windows capture shortcuts
- Windows key + PrtScn: saves a full-screen image in the PicturesScreenshots folder. Choose this when the browser and desktop context are relevant to the report.
- Alt + PrtScn: copies the active window to the clipboard. Paste it into your report or an image app to save or include it.
- Fn + Windows key + Space: Microsoft gives this as an option on devices without a PrtScn key. The key combination’s behavior depends on the laptop hardware.
For Windows shortcut details, consult Microsoft’s Windows screenshot guidance. Not every laptop keyboard behaves identically, so use Snipping Tool from Start search if a shortcut is unavailable.
Make the screenshot useful as report evidence
- Keep text readable at the final size in the document.
- Show enough page context for a reader to understand what the screenshot supports.
- Check that account names, email addresses, private tabs, or other information that should not appear are not exposed.
- Follow the assignment’s rules for captions, source attribution, and accepted file formats. A screenshot alone does not guarantee that citation or copyright requirements have been met.
Troubleshooting
The Windows + Shift + S shortcut does nothing
Search for Snipping Tool from Start and open it directly. Keyboard shortcuts can differ with hardware or Windows configuration; Microsoft also documents a device-dependent Fn + Windows key + Space alternative when PrtScn is missing.
The capture is missing content below the fold
A normal screen snip captures only what is visible on the display. Use Edge’s full-page Screenshot/Web Capture option for a webpage that continues below the screen.

I cannot find a screenshot file
A Snipping Tool capture may need to be saved from its notification or editor; a clipboard capture from Alt + PrtScn must be pasted into an app before it becomes a file. Windows key + PrtScn saves to PicturesScreenshots.
The image is hard to read in the report
Capture a tighter region, adjust the browser zoom before capture, or reduce how much the image is resized in the report. Reopen the final document and inspect the image at its displayed size.
