How to Keep a YouTube Live Stream From Dropping Frames on a VPS

Find out whether YouTube Live frame drops on a VPS come from network delivery, rendering, or encoding—and follow the right fix for each.

To stop a YouTube Live stream from dropping frames on a VPS, first identify whether OBS is losing frames on the network, during rendering, or during encoding. Then fix the matching constraint: stabilize the VPS-to-YouTube connection or lower the bitrate for network drops; reduce output or scene workload for rendering and encoding lag. Check YouTube’s stream health and test the exact setup before relying on it for an event.

Why is my YouTube live stream dropping frames?

“Dropped frames” can describe different problems, and the right fix depends on which counter is rising. OBS distinguishes network-dropped frames from frames missed during rendering and frames skipped during encoding. YouTube Live Control Room also displays stream health and real-time information while you are live.

  • Network-dropped frames: OBS cannot reliably deliver data to the remote ingest server at the configured bitrate. The outbound connection may be unstable or lack capacity.
  • Rendering lag: OBS cannot render each frame on time, often because the scene, sources, filters, or system workload is too demanding.
  • Encoding lag: The encoder cannot encode frames fast enough for the selected settings and available system resources.

Use OBS Statistics and logs alongside YouTube’s health messages. A stream that looks choppy in the preview is not enough to diagnose a VPS CPU problem: network delivery can fail even when rendering and encoding are keeping up. YouTube’s dashboard provides health and real-time information during the stream (YouTube Help: Monitor your stream’s health).

How much upload speed do I need to stream?

Your sustained outbound capacity needs to carry the stream bitrate with room to spare. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth room and accounting for both primary and backup streams if you use them. For example, a configured bitrate of 10 Mbps needs more than 10 Mbps of dependable upload capacity; if a backup stream also uses 10 Mbps, assess the combined load, not just one stream. The 20% is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee that a route will stay stable.

A speed test can reveal that measured upload is clearly below your target, but it cannot prove that a VPS’s route to YouTube will remain stable over a long broadcast. Check the VPS provider’s outbound limits and test from the actual instance and ingest configuration you intend to use. YouTube’s connection guidance is in Streaming tips.

Choose a bitrate and encoder profile that fit

YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), RTMP or RTMPS, a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with bitrate recommendations varying by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check the live settings table when configuring a stream because a bitrate figure is not universal across profiles.

H.264 example profile YouTube recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

These are examples from YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate column, checked on 2026-10-03; YouTube’s page does not state a publication date. Consult its live encoder settings for the current table and your selected codec and profile. Do not choose a bitrate solely because a VPS advertises a high network speed: the VPS must sustain the total stream traffic with headroom.

How do I stop OBS from dropping frames?

If network-dropped frames are increasing

  1. Confirm the network diagnosis. In OBS Statistics, look for network-dropped frames. Check YouTube Live Control Room for health warnings and note when they occur. OBS says network drops point to a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate (OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting, dated 2024-09-30).
  2. Compare bitrate with real outbound capacity. Verify the encoder’s output bitrate and the VPS’s sustained outbound throughput. Include a backup stream in the total if one is configured, and leave YouTube’s recommended headroom.
  3. Test a lower bitrate or lighter profile. Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate in a controlled test, then see whether network drops stop. Use YouTube’s profile-specific encoder table rather than an arbitrary bitrate target.
  4. Investigate the route and network path. Check the VPS provider’s network status, outbound bandwidth limits, selected YouTube ingest destination, VPN use, firewall rules, and other network or security software that could interfere with the connection. OBS identifies VPN and security/network software among possible causes.
  5. Use dynamic bitrate only as a mitigation. OBS can lower bitrate when a connection cannot keep up. This may reduce dropped frames temporarily, but OBS warns it does not fix the underlying connection problem and can lower picture quality.

For OS-specific networking suggestions, follow instructions that match the VPS operating system and OBS version; Windows-only adjustments should not be treated as universal VPS fixes.

If rendering lag or encoding lag is increasing

  1. Reduce output resolution or frame rate. Change one setting at a time and repeat the test so you can see whether the bottleneck improves.
  2. Simplify the scene. Temporarily remove demanding sources, filters, animations, or overlays, then restore them one at a time to identify a workload that pushes OBS over its limit.
  3. Check encoder and system load. Review OBS warnings and logs and observe CPU or GPU load while the stream is running. A saturated resource can indicate that the selected encoder or scene workload is too demanding for that instance.
  4. Choose the encoder deliberately. If you change codec or hardware/software encoding options, verify that the option is available in your VPS environment and compatible with the rest of your setup. Recheck YouTube’s codec-specific bitrate guidance.

OBS’s encoding-performance guide recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate and simplifying demanding scenes, sources, or filters when rendering or encoding cannot keep up (OBS Project: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting, dated 2021-06-12). That guide does not establish a universal minimum VPS CPU, GPU, or RAM configuration, so no instance size can be treated as a guaranteed fix without testing your workload.

Can a VPS handle YouTube live streaming?

Yes, a VPS can run an encoder and send a YouTube Live stream, but whether a specific instance handles your stream smoothly depends on its actual network path and the encoding and rendering workload. The official YouTube and OBS guidance does not establish a minimum VPS size that guarantees a clean stream. Evaluate documented outbound throughput, bandwidth limits or fair-use terms, available CPU or GPU for your chosen encoder, route to the selected ingest, and whether the provider permits the workload. Then test the exact profile and scenes you plan to use.

Test before the event and monitor while live

  1. Set up the full profile in advance. Use the intended VPS, encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, ingest destination, scenes, and audio sources.
  2. Run a representative test. Include the motion, overlays, and audio expected in the real broadcast. Let it run long enough to expose recurring network or resource problems; YouTube does not prescribe a universal test duration.
  3. Check both systems. Review OBS Statistics and logs, and inspect YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages and preview.
  4. Test backup equipment if configured. YouTube recommends testing a backup encoder when one is part of the setup, and starting the encoder before the event to allow time to resolve problems.
  5. Monitor during the broadcast. Watch stream health and OBS counters so you can tell whether an issue is network delivery, rendering, or encoding rather than changing unrelated settings blindly.

YouTube’s stream health guidance explains the dashboard’s health information; its streaming tips cover setup and testing recommendations.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely area to check Next step
OBS network-dropped frames rise while rendering and encoding remain healthy Outbound path, bitrate, ingest, VPN or firewall Compare configured bitrate with sustained outbound capacity; investigate network path and test a lower bitrate.
Rendering lag rises Scene complexity or rendering workload Lower output resolution or frame rate; simplify scenes, sources, and filters.
Encoding lag rises Encoder workload or available system resources Check encoder errors and system load; reduce output demands and retest.
Speed test looks adequate but drops continue Route stability or provider limits Test from the VPS to the chosen ingest under stream conditions; a single speed-test result cannot establish long-run stability.
Dynamic bitrate reduces drops but picture quality worsens Connection remains constrained or unstable Treat it as a temporary quality trade-off, then address the network path or sustained capacity.

Or let it run in the cloud
