That can retry the output while FFmpeg is still running. If FFmpeg exits, a separate process supervisor must restart it; if YouTube rejects the URL, key, or event, retries alone will not fix the cause.
Choose the fix for the kind of disconnect
“Reconnect” can mean three different failures, and each needs a different response:

- Temporary output or network failure: FFmpeg remains alive but cannot write to the RTMP/RTMPS destination. Use FIFO output recovery.
- FFmpeg process exit: the encoder has stopped. Use a host-level supervisor or wrapper to launch it again.
- YouTube-side rejection or event change: credentials, ingest settings, or the event state may prevent publishing. Check Live Control Room and FFmpeg logs; repeating the same connection attempt cannot correct an invalid key or a stopped event.
These approaches do not guarantee that a particular YouTube event or archive will resume unchanged. Verify the event’s state after a failure.

FFmpeg documents this FIFO-muxer pattern for continuing to process a real-time input during a temporary network outage and attempting to recover the RTMP output:

INPUTwith the actual programme source. - Replace the example destination with the current event’s YouTube ingest URL and stream key. Treat both as event-specific configuration, not permanent values copied from an old tutorial.
- Keep the key out of public scripts, screenshots, and logs. Restrict access to any file or service configuration that contains it.
- Run a test stream before relying on the command for a scheduled broadcast. Confirm that the intended audio and video reach YouTube and inspect both FFmpeg output and YouTube stream health.
The command’s one-second recovery wait follows FFmpeg’s documented example; it is not a guarantee of recovery. FIFO recovery is disabled by default. The documented default for recovery_wait_time is five seconds, while max_recovery_attempts defaults to zero, meaning unlimited successive attempts. Choose a retry interval and limit that suit the installation, and make sure repeated failures are visible in logs or alerts.
Decide what happens when the FIFO queue fills
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 tells FIFO to drop packets if its queue overflows. This favors continuing the input timeline, but packets can be lost during a prolonged output outage. Without that option, the encoder may block when the queue fills, creating backpressure instead. Neither choice repairs the network or makes lost packets reappear; select based on whether uninterrupted input processing or avoiding packet loss is more important for the workflow.
Restart FFmpeg if the process exits
FIFO recovery operates inside FFmpeg while its process is alive. It cannot restart a process that has terminated. For that failure, configure a separate host-level supervisor or wrapper to relaunch FFmpeg and record its exit status.

- Use the service manager or process supervisor appropriate to the host, such as systemd, a Windows service manager, a macOS process tool, or the container runtime.
- Set a delay or backoff between restarts so a bad key or unavailable destination does not create a tight restart loop.
- Log the exit code and restart time. Alert someone if failures continue rather than silently retrying forever.
- After a restart, check YouTube Live Control Room: a running FFmpeg process does not establish that the event accepted the stream.
The exact service configuration depends on the operating system and runtime; there is no single cross-platform service file that applies to every setup. A host restart policy is separate from FFmpeg’s protocol or muxer flags.
Do not mistake HTTP reconnect flags for RTMP output recovery
FFmpeg’s -reconnect, -reconnect_at_eof, -reconnect_on_network_error, and -reconnect_on_http_error controls are documented for HTTP protocol operations, commonly input reads. They are not a general fix for a failed RTMP publishing output. For the output-side recovery described here, use the FIFO muxer rather than adding HTTP reconnect options to the command and expecting them to reconnect YouTube publishing.
Use the current YouTube ingest settings
YouTube Live supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS. Get the URL and key from Live Control Room for the actual event. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions say to select the lock icon in Stream settings to display the RTMPS URL; for connection timeouts or SSL errors, check the URL, protocol, server, and port. Because event settings can change, do not assume a URL or key copied from a past stream remains valid.

Set encoder output to suit the connection
Reconnect logic cannot compensate for an unstable uplink or an unsuitable encode. YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and CBR. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Match the codec settings to the resolution and frame rate you actually intend to send.

These are YouTube’s published encoder figures, not a measurement of your available upload bandwidth. Choose a quality your connection can sustain reliably, test before going live, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the broadcast. The channel being based in India or playing music does not imply a different ingest bitrate.
Troubleshoot repeated reconnect attempts
- FFmpeg keeps retrying but never reconnects: confirm the event is still open and that the URL, protocol, server, port, and key match its current Live Control Room settings. A persistent destination or credential error is not a transient outage.
- YouTube shows a timeout or SSL error: recheck the ingest URL and RTMP versus RTMPS selection, along with the server and port, as YouTube advises.
- FFmpeg is no longer running: FIFO cannot recover a terminated process. Inspect the exit status and logs, then use a supervisor with a restart delay and monitoring.
- The stream continues but has gaps or dropped packets: review the FIFO overflow choice. Dropping on overflow protects continued processing at the cost of omitted packets; allowing the queue to fill can block the encoder.
- The stream connects but health is poor: test a lower resolution or bitrate that fits the stable upload connection, and verify the selected codec, CBR mode, audio, and keyframe interval.
- Retries run indefinitely without resolution: set an intentional maximum attempt policy if appropriate, add logs or alerts, and check the event manually. Unlimited retries do not mean the server will eventually accept the stream.
