If OBS keeps displaying a clip’s final image before the next gaming VOD starts, first check the source that plays the clips. For separate OBS Media Sources, enable Show nothing when playback ends. For a sequence of local clips, try one VLC Video source with the files in a playlist. Neither setting guarantees a seamless transition on every setup, so test the actual clips and scene changes before streaming.
First check whether viewers see the frozen frame
An OBS preview can appear frozen even when the outgoing program is not, so check the stream output before changing sources or encoder settings. If possible, make a short private or unlisted test and review what was actually sent to YouTube. OBS source playback, YouTube ingestion, and a stalled preview are different problems; a frame shown in the preview alone does not establish that viewers received it.

Stop a separate Media Source from holding its final frame
If each VOD is a separate OBS Media Source and the source remains visible after its file ends, use the source’s end-of-playback setting:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- In OBS, select the relevant Media Source in the Sources list.
- Open the source’s properties.
- Enable Show nothing when playback ends.
- Apply the change, then test the end of the clip while watching the program output.
OBS Project documentation says this setting hides the source when playback ends and is useful so video files do not show the last frame indefinitely. It is on by default in the documented settings, so check its state rather than assuming it was changed. This hides the ended source; it does not itself start another clip.

If the problem follows a scene change
Check whether Close file when inactive is enabled on the Media Source. OBS warns that closing an inactive file can cause a short period with no source image while the file reloads when active again. That may create a gap when switching scenes; it is not a guaranteed way to make transitions seamless.
Play consecutive clips from one VLC Video playlist
For local files that should play one after another, a single VLC Video source gives OBS a playlist to play instead of relying on separate Media Sources to hand off. OBS documents playlist support, looping enabled by default, and shuffle disabled by default, which preserves the listed order. This is a practical setup to try, not a promise of gapless playback with every file or computer.

- Install VLC. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear in OBS. Match its architecture to OBS: the OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- Add the source. In the OBS scene, use the Sources + button and choose VLC Video. If it is not available, confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Build the playlist. In the source properties, add the VOD files in the order you want them to play. Confirm shuffle is off if order matters.
- Choose whether the sequence repeats. Leave playlist looping on if the sequence should repeat; turn it off if it should stop after the last file.
- Test the handoff. Watch and listen through the end of one clip and the beginning of the next. Check the program output, not only the preview.
OBS Media Source supports common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Format support alone does not establish that a particular playlist will transition without a brief pause; test your specific files and setup.
Test the whole VOD sequence before going live
- Verify the playlist order and shuffle state.
- Confirm whether looping should be on or off.
- Watch the precise point where each file ends and the next begins; listen for an audio gap as well as watching for a visual one.
- Include the scene changes that will happen during the live stream, especially if sources become inactive and reload.
- Make a short private or unlisted test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then check YouTube stream health and messages.
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement before an event, and monitoring stream health and messages during it. Its encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Those are stream-encoding recommendations, not a fix for OBS displaying a local file’s final frame.

Troubleshoot the cause that matches the symptom
| What you see | What to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The final image stays visible after a separate clip ends. | Whether the Media Source remains visible after playback ends. | Enable Show nothing when playback ends; use a playlist source if clips should continue in sequence. |
| A gap appears after switching away from a file and back. | Whether Close file when inactive is enabled. | Test with the setting off; OBS warns that reloading a closed file may briefly leave the source unseen. |
| VLC Video is missing from the source menu. | Whether VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS. | Install the matching VLC version, including 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. |
| The preview looks frozen, but the stream may not be. | The actual outgoing program and a recording or private test stream. | Check what YouTube received before treating the preview as proof of a viewer-facing freeze. |
| The image or audio pauses between playlist items. | The exact files, playlist behavior, and the transition on your setup. | Test the actual sequence before going live. OBS documentation does not promise gapless playback for every setup. |
Keep local playback settings separate from YouTube transport settings
Changing YouTube’s HLS settings is not an established fix for a local OBS source holding a last frame. YouTube’s HLS guidance describes segmented transport and higher latency than RTMP; its 1–4 second segment duration and maximum of five outstanding segments apply to HLS ingestion, not to how OBS displays a local file at its end. Use those requirements only if you are actually sending the stream through HLS.
FFmpeg’s concat protocol is a more technical alternative that reads resources in sequence as one resource; its documentation gives an ffplay example using three MPEG files. It is not established as a drop-in fix for arbitrary codecs or setups, so VLC Video is the simpler first option for an OBS playlist.
