To resume a YouTube stream after Windows restarts, save the right OBS profile and sources, then use Windows Task Scheduler to open OBS when the streaming account logs in. OBS supports the --startstreaming launch parameter, but automatic launch is only one part of the chain: Windows must reach the right user session, OBS must open valid content, and YouTube must accept the feed. Test the whole setup after a controlled restart before relying on it.
What has to work after a restart
A restart-safe setup depends on each link in the broadcast chain:

- Windows starts and the streaming account reaches the session your encoder needs.
- OBS opens the intended profile and scene collection, with its media sources and any required devices available.
- OBS connects to YouTube using the correct server URL and matching stream key.
- YouTube receives the feed and the intended live event or watch page is accessible.
Starting OBS does not by itself prove that the stream is live. YouTube recommends checking the preview and stream health, then confirming that viewers can access the event.
Prepare YouTube and OBS before scheduling anything
Use the correct YouTube stream key
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and select or create a custom stream key. Configure OBS with the matching YouTube server URL and key. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like credentials: keep yours private. Custom keys can be reused, but if a key is compromised, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder configuration to match. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and encoder setup instructions.

Save and check the OBS setup
Save the profile and scene collection you want OBS to use. Confirm that the scenes contain the intended media sources and that any audio or video devices are available. A source that depends on a disconnected drive or device can leave OBS open but unable to produce the expected output. Before enabling automatic streaming, open OBS normally and check its preview.
Set OBS to launch and stream at user logon
OBS documents --startstreaming as a launch parameter that starts streaming automatically. Windows Task Scheduler can launch an action on a user-logon trigger. For OBS, which may need the desktop user session, a logon trigger is generally the appropriate starting point; a system-start trigger is a different event and may fire before that session is ready. Microsoft documents both trigger types and notes that a logon-triggered executable waits for the specified user to log on.

- Open Task Scheduler. Create a task for the Windows account that will run the stream.
- Add a logon trigger. Set it for the streaming account. Do not treat a system-start trigger as equivalent if OBS needs an interactive desktop session.
- Configure the action. Set the action to start OBS and include
--startstreamingin its arguments. Use the OBS executable installed on your machine; the exact path can differ by installation. - Decide whether automatic streaming is appropriate. With this parameter, OBS is intended to start the broadcast when it launches. If you want to inspect OBS first instead, schedule OBS to open without the parameter and start the stream manually.
- Save the task, then test it with a controlled restart. Check the OBS profile, scene collection, preview, YouTube Live Control Room, and public watch page.
Microsoft’s references explain the distinction between startup and logon triggers and how a logon trigger waits for the specified user. OBS lists the supported parameter in its launch parameters documentation.

Plan for unattended operation and YouTube’s event lifecycle
A scheduled task does not sign in for you
A logon-triggered task runs after the specified user logs on. If no person will be present after a restart, automatic sign-in may be needed for this arrangement, but it has security and operational trade-offs that should be considered separately. The scheduled task alone does not remove the need for the required user session. Power, internet access, valid media, and YouTube accepting the feed are also prerequisites; auto-start cannot compensate for their failure.

“24/7” may require more than one YouTube event
YouTube’s encoder instructions state: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” A continuous channel experience therefore needs a plan for the stream or event lifecycle, including how broadcasts will be restarted or recreated and whether the watch page and audience experience meet your needs. The available instructions do not establish that every encoder reconnect after a Windows restart will preserve the same event and watch page.
Check YouTube’s start and stop behavior
YouTube’s live settings include auto-start and auto-stop controls. Review those settings for the event workflow you intend to use rather than assuming that OBS reconnect behavior alone determines what viewers see. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover stream setup, while its live streaming tips recommend testing encoder behavior and monitoring the stream.

Verify the stream after every meaningful configuration change
- Confirm that Windows reached the intended streaming account session.
- Check that OBS opened the intended profile and scene collection and that its preview shows the expected output.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that an incoming feed is present and inspect stream health.
- Open the public watch page and verify that the event is accessible as intended.
- Repeat the check after changes to OBS, Windows startup behavior, YouTube event settings, media paths, or the stream key.
YouTube advises testing encoder behavior and monitoring stream health; its live streaming tips and encoder settings guidance cover preview, health checks, and network-appropriate settings. No particular bitrate or resolution can be prescribed for every setup: choose encoder settings suited to the connection and monitor the resulting stream.
Troubleshoot common restart failures

Windows updates, power loss, internet outages, unavailable media, or a rejected feed can interrupt the chain even when the task is configured correctly. Recheck the full path after recovery instead of treating the task’s launch as proof of a live broadcast.
