If a YouTube encoder disconnects, first check whether YouTube is still receiving the show: inspect the encoder, then confirm the incoming preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. A StreamVoodoo guest feed and the YouTube encoder are separate links in the production chain, so restoring one does not necessarily restore the other. YouTube’s help guidance does not establish a universal reconnect grace period or guarantee that restarting an encoder will resume the same event.
Understand which part of the stream disconnected
A StreamVoodoo production typically has three distinct layers. A StreamVoodoo room supplies remote guest video and audio; its Magic Links can be added as browser sources in OBS or vMix. The switcher and encoder assemble the program and send it to YouTube. YouTube receives that output through the stream URL and stream key and reports its status in Live Control Room.

- Guest feed: StreamVoodoo room and the individual Magic Link.
- Production and encoding: OBS, vMix, or another encoder/switcher that composes and transmits the program.
- Platform ingestion: YouTube’s configured stream URL and key, plus Live Control Room monitoring.
A guest disappearing from the program is not the same fault as the encoder losing YouTube. Likewise, a connected indicator in a production tool does not, by itself, confirm that YouTube has a usable picture and sound.

Recover the YouTube encoder connection
- Check the encoder’s destination. Confirm that it is configured for the intended YouTube event and that its stream URL and stream key are the values for that event. YouTube identifies these as the encoder connection details.
- Inspect the encoder itself. Check whether it is still transmitting, read any displayed error, and confirm the local program output looks and sounds right. Make sure the encoder software is current, and inspect CPU load; YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance treats encoder output and computer performance as possible causes.
- Test the outbound internet connection. If the encoder output appears correct but transmission is unstable, investigate the network path. YouTube advises testing the connection and contacting the internet service provider when needed.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Open the event and examine stream health, status messages, and the incoming preview. YouTube says Live Control Room displays stream health and status messages with instructions. Wait for the preview to return before treating the program as live.
- Address an encoder start error using the event’s key. If YouTube reports that the encoder cannot start, its troubleshooting guidance directs creators to copy the appropriate stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder, then try again and verify that the preview appears.
- If the preview does not return, preserve the current event state while diagnosing. Do not repeatedly end or create events without first checking what Live Control Room shows. The outcome can depend on the event and account setup; the reviewed YouTube guidance does not promise that a restart will attach to the same event or define a universal reconnect window. Record the precise encoder error, YouTube stream-health message, and whether Studio still shows the stream as active before escalating.
If YouTube is healthy but a guest is missing
When Live Control Room shows a healthy incoming program but a remote participant is absent, investigate the StreamVoodoo source separately. Check whether the guest is present in the room and whether the correct Magic Link is still loaded as the browser source in OBS or vMix. StreamVoodoo describes those links as individual video-with-sound outputs for a switcher; restoring a guest feed does not require changing the YouTube stream key unless there is a separate key or destination problem.

Reduce avoidable setup problems
Use a wired connection where practical
StreamVoodoo recommends Ethernet for its highest video settings to perform as intended. A wired connection can be a sensible setup choice when available, but it is not a guarantee against an encoder reconnect, an ISP interruption, or a YouTube-side issue.
Keep the stream key private
YouTube describes stream keys as password-like routing credentials. Do not expose the full key in screenshots, screen recordings, or public tutorials. Replace or reset it only when there is a concrete reason, such as a suspected compromise or a confirmed key problem; then update the encoder with the key for the intended event.

Do not confuse room retention with a live-event guarantee
StreamVoodoo’s FAQ says rooms remain for one week after the host leaves. That describes the room, not the duration of a YouTube live event and not a promise that YouTube will resume an interrupted encoder connection.
