Then check its assembly, casters, and floor; reload heavy items low and evenly; and lock the wheels when it is parked. Do not try to compensate for a damaged wheel or loose frame with extra weight or a floor pad.
Identify what kind of movement you feel
Remove fragile items and gently press each corner of the top shelf while the cart is on the surface where you normally use it. Notice whether the whole cart moves or only part of it.

- The cart rolls as a whole: its caster locks may be disengaged, or the floor may be slick.
- One corner rocks: check for an uneven surface and whether all casters touch the floor; a frame or caster problem is also possible.
- The frame shimmies: inspect accessible joints and fasteners, and look for a bent or loose wheel.
- The cart feels top-heavy: lower and recenter the load.

Look for looseness or damage
With the cart unloaded, inspect shelf joints, rails, handle connections, and caster mounts. Check for loose screws or bolts and for cracked, bent, or separated parts. If the cart was recently assembled, confirm that shelves and frame members are seated squarely before tightening accessible fasteners with the correct tool.

Follow the instructions for your exact cart and do not force or overtighten fasteners; lighter parts can be damaged. Do not use the cart if a structural part or caster mount is damaged. Inspect the wheels
Clear hair, dust, and small debris from the wheels. Check that each caster is attached securely, turns freely when unlocked, and has no visibly cracked or bent wheel, axle, bracket, or mount. Slight play in a swivel mechanism may be normal; movement where the caster attaches to the cart, or at an axle, shelf joint, or frame, warrants closer attention.
Replace visibly damaged hardware rather than trying to steady it with a pad. If you replace a caster, confirm its attachment style and dimensions, wheel diameter, overall height, and lock behavior against the cart’s requirements. No single replacement caster is established as compatible with every slim cart.

Make sure the floor is not causing the wobble
Move the cart to a flat, level spot and check that every wheel contacts the floor. On tile or stone, a wheel may sit over a grout depression or a slick, wet patch; shifting the cart slightly can help. On carpet or a rug, small casters may sink into the pile or padding, so try a firmer location before making an adjustment.
For a cart that stays in one place on a suitable smooth floor, matching caster cups or non-slip pads can help keep the wheels from moving. Support all casters evenly: a pad under only one wheel can create a height difference and tilt the cart. Pads will not correct a loose frame or damaged caster. Use caster locks correctly
Engage every available lock when the cart is parked, then gently test whether it still moves. Lock designs differ: a wheel-only brake stops the wheel turning but may leave the caster housing free to swivel. A total-lock caster restrains both wheel rotation and swivel, if that design is fitted and compatible with the cart. A lock prevents movement; it does not repair a loose connection, damaged part, uneven floor, or unbalanced load.

Before buying replacement casters, compare the mount type (stem or plate, including dimensions), wheel diameter, total height, and locking action. Also consider whether the cart will be moved often or kept parked, and the floor it will use.
Reload and move the cart with stability in mind
Keep weight low and centered
Place heavier items on lower shelves and distribute them rather than concentrating weight high or off-center. Keep the total load within the capacity stated for your exact cart. Capacity figures vary by model and may describe different kinds of loading:

Move gently, then park
Unlock the casters before moving the cart. Use its intended handle, move slowly around turns and across thresholds, and re-engage the locks when parked if the casters support that use. Do not add weight to make a wobbling cart feel steadier: extra weight can increase the consequences of a failure without correcting its cause.
Why a narrow cart can tip
A cart is more likely to tip when its load is high or off-center. CasterHQ explains the basic geometry this way: “A cart tips when its center of gravity passes outside the wheelbase.” Its calculator’s tipping and speed figures are estimates from a rigid static model, not certified safety limits; see CasterHQ’s tipping calculator. Use that explanation as a reason to keep loads low and centered, not as a way to certify a particular cart’s safe load or movement speed.
