Serve Steak Diane with potatoes and a fresh vegetable or salad. Fries make a crisp steakhouse-style plate; sautéed, boiled or smashed potatoes—or rice—are good choices when you want a softer side to catch the savory pan sauce. Add something fresh for contrast. There is no single required accompaniment: published recipes pair the dish in several ways.
Choose a potato to suit the sauce and texture you want
Steak Diane’s pan sauce is part of the appeal, so a useful side either contrasts with it or gives you a way to enjoy every bit. These recipe-backed options offer different textures rather than one mandatory pairing.

Fries for a crisp, steakhouse-style plate
Le Creuset’s recipe, credited to chef Ludo Lefebvre, serves Steak Diane with pomme frites and describes French fries as a typical pairing. Their crisp texture contrasts with the sauced steak. See the Le Creuset Steak Diane and pomme frites recipe.

The Hairy Bikers’ BBC Food recipe parboils potato chunks, then sautés them with butter, oil and garlic until golden. It serves them with crisp mixed salad. The recipe also advises using fresh stock or a weak stock-cube preparation in the sauce to avoid overpowering the pan juices; that is guidance for its version, not a universal rule. See the BBC Food Steak Diane with sauté potatoes recipe.

Boiled or smashed potatoes to catch the sauce
The Washington Post’s recipe, adapted from chef Scott Earick of Scott’s on Fifth in Indialantic, Florida, recommends boiled or smashed potatoes as well as rice for capturing the sauce. For the smashed option, it gives a simple finish with butter, salt and pepper. See The Washington Post’s Steak Diane recipe.
Rice when you want a simple, soft starch
Rice is another direct suggestion in The Washington Post recipe. Its mild flavor and soft texture make it a practical option for spooning the sauce over, particularly if you would rather not prepare potatoes.

Add a fresh side for contrast
A crisp salad balances a rich steak-and-sauce plate with freshness and crunch. The Hairy Bikers’ version pairs Steak Diane with a crisp mixed salad. Roasted vegetables or a vegetable medley are other documented variations, while baked potatoes and dinner rolls also appear among Publix recipe meal suggestions; these are options, not a consensus about the definitive side.
- For a classic-feeling plate: fries or sauté potatoes with crisp salad.
- For maximum sauce-catching: boiled or smashed potatoes, or rice, with a green vegetable.
- For a less heavy balance: a generous crisp salad or roasted vegetables alongside a smaller portion of potatoes.
BBC Food’s roasted-vegetable version offers another way to plate the steak, with optional roasted new potatoes. See the BBC Food Steak Diane recipe with roasted vegetables. Publix also suggests baked potatoes and dinner rolls alongside its vegetable-medley version. See Publix’s Steak Diane with vegetable medley.

Build a practical menu
For a straightforward dinner, pick one potato or rice side and one fresh vegetable or salad. Choose just one starch unless you are intentionally serving a larger, steakhouse-style spread; Steak Diane and its sauce are already substantial. If preparing potatoes in advance, keep the salad or vegetables fresh and finish the sauce shortly before serving so the hot steak and sides arrive together.

The cited recipes show variety: fries, sauté potatoes and salad, boiled or smashed potatoes, rice, and vegetable sides. Le Creuset calls fries typical for its pairing, but the examples do not establish a single universal or required side. A vintage Steak Diane recipe from Disney Parks Blog, reproducing a Lake Buena Vista Club version from the restaurant’s 1974–1994 period, documents a Burgundy-sauce preparation but does not specify an accompaniment.
