Don’t assume obstacle avoidance will spot a thin cable or that every robot can cross the same doorway lip.
Why robot vacuums get stuck on cords
Thin, floor-level cables can be hard for a robot to detect and easy for its brush or wheels to catch. In guidance for the Omni C30 Edge (T210Q), eufy says its line-laser system may not reliably detect cables under 3 mm. That is a limitation of this specific model, not a universal detection threshold. Xiaomi also notes that the X20 Pro detects power cords and certain other objects less reliably in low light.

For that reason, don’t rely on obstacle avoidance as your cable-management plan. eufy’s advice for its C30 Edge is: “Before starting a cleaning cycle, take a few seconds to remove any cables, data cords, or shoelaces from the floor.” LG similarly advises: “Do not leave obstacles such as wires, multi taps, laces and so on the floor.” LG’s general preparation guidance is dated November 23, 2023, and says its content may differ by model.

Remove loose cords; secure permanent ones
- Pick up charging leads, data cords, shoelaces, and other loose items before starting a run.
- Route cords that need to remain connected behind furniture where possible. For fixed cables, eufy recommends cable ties or a cable management box to keep them organized and off the floor.
- If a cable cluster cannot be moved, create a no-go zone or virtual wall in the app if your robot supports that feature. A boundary reduces exposure to the area; it does not make the cable itself safe to touch.
When a robot stops on a cord, pause it, remove the cord, and check the brush and wheels for wrapped thread before restarting. Follow the vacuum’s manual for safe brush and wheel cleaning.

Stop loose rugs and mats from catching
Light rugs, mats, tassels, and loose edges can be rolled under the chassis or caught by the brush. LG advises removing light rugs and mats, along with cloth, wires, power strips, and laces, before cleaning. If the robot repeatedly catches a mat, remove it for that run rather than expecting obstacle detection to solve the problem.
Check carpet mode before changing the room
A stable carpet may be fine to cross, but the selected mode can change what the robot does. Roborock documents four carpet-avoidance modes; the available names and behavior can vary by model and app version. The relevant distinction is whether the robot avoids carpet, crosses it without cleaning, or handles it according to a mop-related setting.

For example, ECOVACS says the DEEBOT T10 may avoid a doorway mat in vacuum-and-mop mode to prevent wetting it. If the robot misses a room or turns away at a rug, check the app’s carpet and cleaning-mode settings before assuming the rug is physically blocking it. If a mat shifts, a rug pad or gripper may help it stay in place, but it will not fix fringe, high pile, or a setting that tells the vacuum to avoid carpet.
Check threshold height against your exact model
There is no single threshold height that applies to every robot vacuum. LG’s 2023 general guide says its robot vacuum can go over obstacles up to 20 mm, while warning that information may differ by model. ECOVACS gives up to 2 cm for the DEEBOT T10 in its 2022 guidance. Neither figure should be treated as a guarantee for another model or for every transition shape.

Measure the doorway transition and consult the manual or specifications for your exact vacuum. A sharp, uneven, or soft-edged transition can behave differently from a flat ledge at the same measured height. A low-profile beveled transition aid may be worth considering only after checking the robot’s clearance, the ramp’s geometry and attachment method, and whether doors can still open; the manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish a universal ramp solution.

If a route that used to work has become difficult, check for a new obstruction or a maintenance issue before changing the room layout. Xiaomi’s troubleshooting guidance is for the X20 Pro, so use your own model’s instructions where they differ.

- Pause the run and clear the path. Remove cords, laces, loose mats, and anything else the robot can reach.
- Check wheels and brush. Look for hair or thread wrapped around the wheels or brush, then clean them as the manual directs.
- Check the sensor and charge. Xiaomi advises cleaning the X20 Pro’s front sensor and checking battery level. Use the model’s instructions for sensor cleaning.
- Check software. Confirm the app and firmware are current, then retry the route. Xiaomi includes this in its X20 Pro troubleshooting guidance; it is not a guaranteed fix for every brand.
- Recheck the transition and settings. Compare its height and profile with the exact model’s stated clearance, and confirm the carpet mode does not exclude the area.
