What matters most: playing now or deciding with more information?
There is no universally best time to buy a game. Weigh the value of playing now against the launch price, how confident you are that the game suits you, what reviews can tell you, your tolerance for an uncertain launch state, your budget and backlog, and the applicable refund terms.

Buying at launch can make sense when
- You are eager to play immediately, and that experience is worth the price to you.
- You want to join friends or take part in the release-window conversation.
- You know the series or developer well enough to feel confident about the purchase, while accepting that your platform’s reviews or launch information may be limited.
Waiting can make sense when
- You want more information about the game before spending.
- You would prefer to spend less, but can wait without knowing when—or whether—the game will be discounted.
- Your budget or backlog makes another immediate purchase a lower priority.
These are ways to make a personal tradeoff, not predictions that a game will improve, that launch problems will occur, or that a sale will arrive by a particular date.

Reviews can provide useful evidence, but their timing and scope vary. The 2024 Big Games Machine Games Journalist Survey records concerns that short lead times for review copies can affect review quality or delay publication. That is survey commentary, not a measure of every review or every game.

Before relying on a review, check whether it covers the version and platform you plan to play. A review of a different platform or build may not answer the questions that matter for your purchase. If reviews are not available yet, decide whether the chance to play sooner is worth buying with less information.
Will waiting guarantee a lower price?
No. The available store guidance does not establish a timetable for discounts or a typical discount amount. Waiting may give you a chance to buy at a lower price, but the timing and size of any future sale are uncertain.

Steam says it does not refund the difference when a game’s price changes. Its sale FAQ says you can request a refund for the original purchase and repurchase at the current sale price, subject to refund eligibility. That is a policy option, not a promise that a sale will happen.

Do not treat a refund window as a risk-free trial. Rules differ between platforms and regions, and conditions may depend on whether you have started downloading or streaming the game. Check the current policy that applies to your account and purchase before relying on a refund.

Steam pre-orders
According to Steam’s refund guidance, a pre-order that has been released may still qualify for a refund if you request it within two weeks of release and have played for less than two hours, subject to the standard policy. This is a Steam example, not a general rule for other stores.
PlayStation Store in the United States
For the United States, PlayStation’s Store policy allows cancellation of a digital game within 14 days of purchase only if downloading or streaming has not started, except for faulty content. Pre-order conditions also depend on when the order was placed and whether downloading or streaming the main product began. Check the policy for your region and transaction; these US terms should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

If the game is in Early Access, judge its current state
Early Access is a specific case: you are buying a game that is still in development, not simply choosing whether to buy a finished release on day one. Steam Support advises: “If you aren’t excited to play the game in its current state, then hold off and wait until a future update or full release.” Read that as guidance for Steam Early Access—not as a universal judgment about every launch.

A quick decision check
- Ask what playing now is worth to you. If the release-window experience matters enough to justify the price, launch may suit you.
- Check how much you still need to learn. Look for reviews that cover your platform and version; if important questions remain, waiting gives you more time to assess them.
- Make room for uncertainty. Do not buy on the assumption that a launch will be trouble-free or that a particular discount is coming.
- Check your budget and backlog. Compare this purchase with what you already own and what you can comfortably spend.
- Read the relevant refund policy. Confirm the rules for your store, region, and transaction before treating a refund as a fallback.
