Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Run FFmpeg as a systemd service with an appropriate restart policy, then check YouTube’s Live Control Room to confirm the stream has recovered. These are two separate jobs: systemd can relaunch a process that exits, but only YouTube can confirm that healthy video and audio are reaching the intended broadcast.
First identify what stopped working
A live stream can fail in several ways, and each calls for a different check. A service restart helps when FFmpeg exits; it may not detect a process that is still running but no longer sending media.

| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg exited or failed to launch | Inspect the service status and recent journal logs. Check the command, permissions, and environment used by the service. |
| FFmpeg remains active but the picture or sound has stopped advancing | Check source availability and media progress. A restart policy triggered only by process exit may not catch a hung or stalled process. |
| The camera or other input is unavailable | Check the source and its connection separately from YouTube. Input reconnection depends on the source protocol and FFmpeg’s supported behavior for it. |
| FFmpeg is running, but YouTube shows an error or unhealthy ingest | Check FFmpeg’s output logs, the configured ingest URL and key, and stream health in Live Control Room. |
A Raspberry Pi-focused streaming project documents using systemd for process supervision and separate controls such as progress timeouts and source probing; its implementation is an example, not a universal service configuration. Project documentation
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse systemd to restart FFmpeg after it exits
Once your FFmpeg command works reliably when run manually, place it in a systemd service. The exact unit depends on your Raspberry Pi OS and systemd version, input source, FFmpeg build, service account, and desired retry behavior. Do not copy a generic service file without adapting those details.

- Check the current service state. If you already have a unit, use
systemctl statuswith its service name and review recent logs withjournalctl -u. Establish whether FFmpeg exited, never launched, or remains active. - Validate the command and source. Run the working FFmpeg command under the same service account and with the same required environment and permissions. Confirm the input is reachable before attributing the failure to YouTube.
- Create or update the systemd unit. Put the verified command in the unit’s
ExecStart. Configure a restart policy for the failure behavior you intend, and choose a delay and restart limit suitable for your deployment. Check directive availability and meaning against the systemd version installed on the Pi. - Reload and start the service. After editing a unit, reload systemd’s unit definitions, start the service, and inspect its status and journal output. If you want streaming to start after reboot, enable the service for boot as well.
- Test a process restart. Stop the FFmpeg process in a controlled test and confirm systemd starts it again. Then verify YouTube’s remote state; a successful local restart alone does not prove that the broadcast recovered.
Keep stream keys out of public logs, screenshots, and examples. If a key has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
Reconnect flags do not replace process supervision
FFmpeg’s reconnect options are protocol-specific. The documented option “Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF is hit” is an HTTP protocol option; it does not relaunch FFmpeg after the process exits and should not be treated as a universal reconnection control for RTMP or RTMPS output. Use the mechanism that matches the failure: a service manager for an exited process, source-specific handling for an interrupted input, and log and ingest checks for output or network problems. If FFmpeg stays alive but stops making progress, add suitable progress or health monitoring rather than relying on an exit-triggered restart alone.

Confirm YouTube has recovered the stream
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the preview and stream health after FFmpeg restarts.
- Confirm the encoder is using the intended server URL and current stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” and documents creating or resetting them in Studio. Manage live stream settings
- Check that the preview shows moving video and that audio is present. If YouTube reports unhealthy ingest, use its status alongside FFmpeg’s logs to isolate the problem.
- Run a test stream with representative movement and sound. If you have configured a backup encoder, test its failover separately and verify that the viewer-facing player changes over as expected. YouTube live streaming best practices
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. HLS is a different ingest option for supported cases, including HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. YouTube’s HLS guidance calls for 1–4 second segments and a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments; HLS also has higher latency. Changing ingest protocol does not replace local process supervision. Encoder settings · Set up an HLS stream

Keep encoder settings and archiving in perspective
Encoder settings can affect stream quality, but they do not make a crashed process restart. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists a maximum frame rate of 60 fps and recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds. Treat these as encoder configuration guidance, not recovery guarantees. YouTube encoder settings
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not guarantee that every FFmpeg restart preserves one uninterrupted broadcast or archive; check the broadcast state and resulting archive in YouTube Studio. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Troubleshoot common recovery problems
- The service enters a rapid restart loop: inspect the journal for a permanent command, permission, or configuration error. Use an appropriate delay and restart limit for the installed systemd version instead of repeatedly retrying at high speed.
- The service reports active but YouTube has no moving picture: check whether the input is reachable and whether FFmpeg’s media progress is advancing. A live process is not proof of a live feed.
- FFmpeg restarted but the stream key or ingest is rejected: verify the configured URL and key against the intended YouTube stream. Reset an invalid or exposed key in Studio, then update the service configuration.
- The preview is present but stream health is poor: review FFmpeg’s output logs and YouTube’s health feedback; investigate the network and encoder output rather than adding unrelated HTTP input reconnect flags.
- A backup encoder appears configured but viewers do not switch: run a separate failover test and confirm what happens in the public player. A local systemd restart test does not test backup ingest.
