How to Keep a Podcast YouTube Live Stream Playing After the Playlist Ends

YouTube’s viewer Loop control does not keep a creator’s live broadcast running. Set the encoder’s media playlist to repeat or transition to another item, then verify the feed in YouTube Studio.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To keep a podcast live stream going, make the playlist that feeds your encoder repeat or move to another item, and keep the encoder sending video and audio to YouTube Live. YouTube’s playlist Loop control repeats playback for an individual viewer; it does not restart a creator’s live-stream source when that source ends.

First, identify which playlist you mean

“Playlist” can mean two different things in this setup:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • A YouTube playlist a viewer watches: Use YouTube’s Loop control to repeat playback on that viewer’s device. YouTube documents looping on computers and mobile devices, with repeat controls also available for TVs and gaming consoles. This changes playback for the viewer; it does not keep a live broadcast on air.
  • A playlist of podcast recordings feeding your live stream: Set the encoder or production system to repeat that media playlist, play another item when one ends, or switch to a holding slate. The encoder must continue sending its output to YouTube Live.

The exact repeat or transition control depends on the encoder or production tool. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to send a feed using a server URL and stream key, but it does not provide playlist-loop instructions for every third-party tool. Check the current documentation for the encoder you use.

Set up a prerecorded podcast stream that continues

1. Make sure you can stream from your channel

Confirm that live streaming is available for your YouTube channel and open YouTube Studio. Create or select the live stream you intend to use. YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders; a particular computer or hardware product is not required by the platform’s documented workflow.

2. Copy the stream connection details into your encoder

In the selected stream’s settings in YouTube Studio, find the server URL and stream key. Enter them in the corresponding connection fields in your encoder, then save the configuration. Interface labels can change, so follow the current Studio and encoder documentation if the fields are named differently.

Treat the stream key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not publish it, include it in a recording, or share it with people who should not control the broadcast. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in Studio and update the encoder.

3. Configure what happens when each recording ends

In the encoder or production system, build the media playlist from podcast recordings you are entitled to use. Find its repeat, loop, next-item, or transition behavior and configure it so the output does not end when the last item finishes. Depending on the tool, that may mean repeating the full playlist, moving to another recording, or switching to a holding slate while you restore the playlist.

Do not assume a YouTube viewer-side Loop setting, auto-start, or auto-stop will replenish the encoder’s source. Those controls concern playback or stream lifecycle; continuity depends on the source and output your encoder keeps generating.

4. Start the encoder and verify the live output

  1. Start the encoder’s stream output using the configured server URL and stream key.
  2. Check the stream preview in YouTube Studio and confirm that the expected video and audio are reaching YouTube.
  3. Watch the transition at the end of a recording. Confirm the next item starts, the playlist repeats, or the holding slate appears without an unintended gap or silence.
  4. Monitor stream health and audio/video continuity, particularly during initial setup. YouTube advises testing an encoder and monitoring the stream; test the end-of-playlist behavior before relying on an unattended broadcast.

5. Decide how the broadcast should start and stop

Review the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings deliberately. These options govern stream lifecycle, not what the encoder plays after the final media item. Reusing stream settings may also reuse the stream key, so check which key is configured before starting a new broadcast.

Plan for long-running broadcasts

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a longer continuous stream will be archived in the same way. YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, so viewers should not be promised unlimited rewind on a continuous broadcast.

Copyright and monetization checks for podcast media

Only stream recordings and other material you have the rights or permissions to use. A loop does not make music, clips, guest recordings, or other third-party content safe to rebroadcast. Check the rights for the complete playlist, not just the podcast episode itself, and review YouTube’s current copyright rules before going live. Repeated or reused programming can also raise monetization questions; a live stream being technically continuous does not guarantee that it qualifies for monetization.

Troubleshoot a stream that stops at the end of the playlist

What you see Likely cause What to check
The live broadcast ends when the final episode finishes The encoder’s media source or playlist has reached its end, or its output stopped. Enable repeat or configure a next item or holding slate in the encoder. Verify that the encoder continues sending output after the transition.
A viewer sees the playlist end, but the live stream is still running The viewer is using a normal YouTube playlist, not the media playlist feeding your encoder. Use the viewer-side Loop control to repeat that playlist on the viewer’s device. Do not expect this to alter the live broadcast.
YouTube Studio shows no incoming picture or audio The encoder may not be sending output, or its connection details may be wrong. Confirm the encoder is streaming and that its server URL and stream key match the selected stream in Studio. Check the preview and stream health.
The stream works once but not after reusing its settings The reused setup may contain an outdated or different stream key, or lifecycle settings may differ. Compare the active Studio stream’s connection details and auto-start/auto-stop settings with the encoder configuration.
There is a gap, silence, or an unexpected black screen between episodes The transition behavior, media file ending, or next-item configuration may leave a gap. Test the playlist transition with the actual recordings. Adjust the encoder’s repeat or next-item behavior, or use a holding slate while resolving the source issue.
The stream continues, but viewers cannot rewind as expected DVR availability can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Set viewer expectations before a long broadcast; do not promise unlimited rewind.
