How to Keep a Podcast Stream Running on an Old Windows PC

Use OBS to send podcast audio from an older Windows PC, test the destination, and configure reconnect and restart behavior—while understanding the limits of a home computer.

You can keep a podcast stream running from an older Windows PC with OBS Studio, provided the computer, audio source, internet connection, and destination service can sustain the job. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, verify the audio and test the stream, then enable automatic reconnect and arrange for OBS to start after a reboot if needed. These steps improve recovery, but a PC-originated stream still depends on the computer and home connection staying available.

First, identify what is actually sending the audio

“Podcast stream” can mean a live broadcast from a microphone, a playlist of local audio, or audio already hosted by another service. Identify the destination and source before configuring software. OBS is relevant when the PC is sending audio to the destination; if a hosting service already delivers the stream, OBS may not be needed. The destination’s supported input method and stream-key requirements determine how OBS must be configured.

Check whether the old PC is a suitable host

OBS lists Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic requirements, but compatibility alone does not mean the PC can stream reliably. OBS notes that CPU demand varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. See the OBS system requirements; the page is dated August 25, 2021.

  • Note the Windows version, processor, memory, and graphics capability.
  • Confirm that the audio source and destination work with the chosen workflow.
  • Check that the connection has stable upload capacity for the configured stream.
  • Plan for continuous power and prevent the PC from sleeping while the stream is meant to run. Windows menus vary by version, so check the installed version’s power settings.

Windows 10 Home and Pro support ended on October 14, 2025. The operating system continues to function, but Microsoft says it no longer receives regular security updates. Check Microsoft’s current guidance on upgrade eligibility or available extended updates for your region before relying on an internet-connected Windows 10 PC. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 Home and Pro lifecycle page and its Windows end-of-support information.

Set up OBS and verify the audio

  1. Install OBS Studio from its official site. Record the PC’s Windows version and hardware details so you can judge whether a chosen output workload is realistic.
  2. Run Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. Treat its recommendations as a starting point: OBS says the wizard considers hardware and network conditions. Its Quick Start Guide also recommends testing before relying on a stream.
  3. Configure the destination. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select the destination service if it is listed, or enter its custom server details and stream key as required. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access may be able to broadcast through the associated channel.
  4. Choose a conservative audio output bitrate. OBS’s overview gives about 160 kbps as a typical audio-stream setting and notes that lower rates may suit a limited upload connection. Use the destination’s requirements where available, and reduce output demands if the PC or connection struggles. Without the PC specifications, destination, and stable upload capacity, there is no single correct bitrate to prescribe. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
  5. Check that the source is audible. Start the intended audio and watch the Audio Mixer meters. If they do not move, inspect the selected devices under Settings → Audio and confirm the correct input or playback source is selected.
  6. Run a short test and listen at the destination. Check that the receiving service gets clear audio before scheduling unattended operation. A moving meter alone does not establish that the destination is receiving a usable stream.

Make OBS recover after a disconnect or reboot

Reconnect after a dropped connection

In OBS’s Advanced settings, configure automatic reconnect. This can help OBS retry after a connection loss, but it cannot prevent a power failure, PC crash, internet outage, or problem at the receiving service.

Start streaming when OBS launches

OBS documents a --startstreaming launch parameter for starting a stream when OBS is launched. If Windows Task Scheduler or another automation method launches OBS, set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe, as described in the OBS Launch Parameters guide. Supervise a restart test before depending on it: automatic launch does not itself guarantee that the stream starts successfully.

Reduce avoidable interruptions

  • Keep the computer on reliable power and the network connection stable.
  • Set Windows power behavior so the PC does not sleep during the intended broadcast.
  • Test the complete restart path: reboot, OBS launch, audio source, connection, and playback at the destination.

Troubleshoot a stream that stops or stutters

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
Audio meters do not move OBS audio source or selected device Open Settings → Audio, select the intended device, start the source, and check the mixer again.
OBS reports dropped frames Unstable connection or bitrate the connection cannot sustain Lower the bitrate to fit stable upload capacity. If the destination offers alternate ingest servers, try another. Check VPN or security software, router/modem, network adapter, and cables. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting page, dated September 30, 2024, lists faulty network hardware, including cables, among possible causes.
OBS launches after reboot but the stream does not start Launch parameter, working directory, destination settings, or source readiness Verify the --startstreaming parameter, set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe when using an external launcher, and supervise another full restart test.
Stream stops despite automatic reconnect PC, network, or receiving-service failure beyond OBS’s reconnect behavior Check power, internet access, and destination status, then reconnect and confirm playback at the destination. Automatic reconnect is a recovery aid, not protection from every failure.
