How to Keep a PCIe 5.0 SSD Cool and Prevent Thermal Throttling

PCIe 5.0 SSDs have no universal throttling temperature. Check your model’s operating specification and SMART readings, then inspect motherboard cooling, fit, and airflow.

Start with the SSD maker’s operating-temperature specification and the drive’s SMART temperature during the workload that concerns you. PCIe 5.0 does not have one universal safe temperature or throttling point: specifications and cooling needs vary by model, workload, and system. Before buying an add-on cooler, check whether your motherboard already has a compatible M.2 heatsink and whether it fits your drive.

How to tell whether your PCIe 5.0 SSD is getting too hot

  1. Identify the exact SSD model. Find its product page or manual and note the stated operating-temperature range. For example, Corsair lists 0°C to +70°C for the MP700; that specification applies to that model, not to every PCIe 5.0 SSD. Corsair MP700 specifications.
  2. Read SMART temperature while the problem workload is running. A reading taken at idle may not reflect a long transfer or other sustained workload. Kingston says SMART temperatures can be checked with vendor utilities or general system tools; ADATA says its SSD Toolbox displays operating temperature. Kingston’s NVMe temperature guide and ADATA SSD Toolbox.
  3. Watch for performance changes during sustained work. Slowing transfers can be a reason to investigate heat, but do not assume a particular SMART number proves throttling. A maximum operating temperature, a sensor reading, a controller temperature, and the temperature at which a drive reduces performance are different measurements.
  4. Use a published throttle limit only if the drive maker provides one. The cited manufacturer pages do not establish a common Gen5 throttling threshold. Seagate’s educational article says demanding workloads can bring NVMe temperatures into a 70–80°C range where protective throttling may activate, but that is general guidance, not a specification for a particular PCIe 5.0 model. Seagate: How to Keep an SSD Cool.

Does an NVMe SSD need a heatsink?

Not always. Kingston says some NVMe SSDs can work without added cooling, while others benefit from a heatsink or better airflow. The answer depends on the specific drive, the workload, and the system’s cooling arrangement. TEAMGROUP’s GC PRO product guidance takes a stronger position for its own Gen5 drive: it says Gen5 NVMe SSDs may generate high heat during high-speed transmission and calls for a heatsink or active cooler to prevent overheating-related throttling. Treat that as TEAMGROUP’s product guidance, not as an independent test or a universal rule for every Gen5 SSD. Kingston’s NVMe temperature guide; TEAMGROUP GC PRO.

Check the motherboard’s M.2 cooling before adding a cooler

Look in the motherboard manual for the M.2 slot’s heatsink and installation instructions. Confirm the heatsink is intended for the slot your SSD occupies and that it can contact the drive’s components through its thermal pad. Also check the SSD’s dimensions, nearby components, case clearance, and airflow around the M.2 location. An add-on cooler can be a poor fit if the board already has a heatsink or if the drive has an integrated cooling assembly.

ADATA’s LEGEND 970, for instance, is described as having dual-layer aluminum fins and a micro fan. ADATA advises checking available space and the motherboard manual before installation. It also warns that removing this product’s heatsink is considered man-made damage and is not covered by warranty, so do not remove an integrated heatsink unless the drive maker permits it. ADATA LEGEND 970.

Compare cooling options by fit and design

Cooling approach What to check Manufacturer example
Motherboard M.2 heatsink Confirm the board’s heatsink fits the SSD and its thermal pad makes proper contact. Check the board manual and clearance. Availability and performance depend on the particular motherboard; the cited sources do not provide a cross-board comparison.
Passive heatsink Check dimensions and airflow around the M.2 slot. A passive design does not use a fan. MSI describes the SPATIUM M580 FROZR as a passive heatpipe-and-finned solution and claims it can reduce temperatures by up to 20°C. That is MSI’s product claim, not a general benchmark. MSI SPATIUM M580 FROZR.
Active cooler Check physical clearance and whether the fan and heatsink fit your case and M.2 location. TEAMGROUP recommends a heatsink or active cooler in its GC PRO guidance; the cited page does not establish a measured comparison against other designs.
SSD with integrated cooling Check that its fins or fan fit the motherboard and case. Do not assume a board heatsink can be stacked on top. ADATA describes the LEGEND 970 as using dual-layer aluminum fins and a micro fan.

What to do if temperatures remain high

  • Recheck that the heatsink is compatible with the drive and motherboard and that its thermal pad contacts the SSD correctly.
  • Improve airflow around the M.2 slot where practical, while keeping the drive’s physical clearance in mind.
  • Check for firmware guidance from the drive maker. TEAMGROUP specifically points users to its SMART Tool for firmware checks: TEAMGROUP downloads and support.
  • Contact the SSD maker if readings exceed the model’s stated operating range or sustained performance degrades and the cause is unclear.

What the temperature numbers do—and do not—tell you

Manufacturer figures are not directly interchangeable. Corsair’s 0°C to +70°C is an MP700 operating specification; MSI’s “up to 20°C” is a product-page claim about its FROZR cooling solution; and Seagate’s 70–80°C range is general educational guidance about possible NVMe throttling under demanding workloads. None establishes a universal PCIe 5.0 throttle temperature or a controlled, comparable result across SSDs and coolers.
