How to Start Investing in Indian Stocks With a Demat Account

To buy listed Indian shares directly, you generally need a bank account for money, a trading account with a broker to place orders, and a demat account to hold securities electronically. Open these through appropriately registered intermediaries, complete KYC and account agreements, understand the charges and permissions before signing, and learn the risks before choosing shares.

What a demat account does—and what it does not do

A demat account holds securities in electronic form. It is not where you place an order or, ordinarily, where you manage the bank payments for a trade. Those are separate functions handled by the trading account and bank account.

Account What it is for Who provides or operates it
Bank account Paying or receiving trade-related funds Your bank
Trading (broking) account Placing buy and sell orders through a broker A stockbroker
Demat account Holding securities electronically A depository participant (DP), which connects investors to a depository

India has two depositories, NSDL and CDSL. Investors access their services through DPs; the broker and the DP may be the same group or different entities. SEBI explains these account roles in its demat and trading account guidance.

Choose a registered broker and depository participant

Before opening an account, verify the actual legal entity you will deal with rather than relying only on a familiar brand, an app listing, or a social-media recommendation. A broker is an intermediary that executes securities transactions for clients. NSE advises investors to find a SEBI-registered member and check the exchange where that broker is registered.

  • Check the broker’s SEBI registration and exchange membership using the relevant official records or exchange resources.
  • Confirm which entity will provide the demat account and verify that it is a registered DP.
  • Compare the full schedule of account, transaction, and service charges, not just a headline brokerage rate.
  • Check the account-opening and KYC process, support options you expect to use, statement access, grievance handling, and the terms of any authorization requested.

This is a way to assess providers, not a ranked broker recommendation. NSE’s investor awareness guidance covers finding and dealing with registered market intermediaries.

Complete KYC and account paperwork

The selected intermediary will explain its current document and verification requirements. SEBI says the stockbroker carries out initial client KYC and uploads client details to the KYC Registration Agency (KRA) system. The precise steps can vary by provider, so do not assume that every application uses the same documents, digital checks, or activation timeline.

Understand charges before adding funds

SEBI’s Investor Charter says there is no charge payable for opening a demat account and that no minimum balance is required in a demat account. Those statements do not mean that every service, transaction, or linked trading-account feature is free. Brokerage and other applicable account or service charges depend on the provider and its current terms.

Before funding the account, read the provider’s current tariff and ask what charges apply to the services you plan to use. SEBI’s Investor Charter sets out the demat-account statements, while its investor Do’s and Don’ts advises investors to note applicable charges, brokerage, and fees.

Protect the accounts and keep records

Account security involves more than choosing a strong password. Treat forms, delivery instructions, account authorizations, and transaction records as part of the same control system.

  • Read documents before signing; never sign blank forms or delivery slips.
  • Do not share passwords or other account credentials.
  • Understand the scope of any power of attorney or other authorization before granting it.
  • Keep account documents and transaction records, and review demat statements for holdings and activity you do not recognize.
  • Consider making a nomination in line with the provider’s process and the applicable rules.
  • Avoid unregistered intermediaries, unsolicited hot tips, and claims of guaranteed investment returns.

These safeguards are consistent with SEBI Investor’s official investor guidance.

Choose investments with the risks in view

Opening accounts makes it possible to transact; it does not make any particular share suitable for you. Securities differ in their features and risks. SEBI advises investors to understand those characteristics and make decisions in light of their investment objectives and risk appetite.
