To bring a Mac mini back after a power cut, enable its power-failure startup option in macOS, protect it and the network gear with a suitably sized UPS if you need ride-through time, and configure and test the encoder’s restart and reconnect behavior. These are separate links in the recovery chain: macOS starting again does not by itself restart a YouTube broadcast.
What has to recover after a power cut
A local YouTube stream depends on several things coming back in order: power, the Mac, a usable macOS session, network equipment and internet access, the encoder, and YouTube receiving the encoder feed. Apple documents how a desktop Mac can start after power returns and how macOS handles a connected UPS. YouTube documents the encoder’s stream URL and key. Neither source guarantees that a particular third-party encoder will reopen and resume streaming after a reboot.

- Brief outage: a UPS may keep the Mac mini and selected networking equipment powered for the UPS’s available runtime.
- Longer outage: configure the Mac to start when power returns, then arrange for the required session and encoder to become available.
- Broadcast recovery: confirm that the encoder reconnects and YouTube receives the feed; do not assume a computer restart alone resumes the live stream.
Set the Mac mini to start when power returns
Use the Energy settings available on your Mac
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Energy.
- Look for the power-failure startup control, such as Start up automatically after a power failure. Apple describes this option as starting the Mac after a power interruption.
- If your Mac shows Start up when power is connected, select the behavior appropriate to your setup. Apple documents choices that can include Never, After power failure and Always.
- Use only controls actually shown on your Mac. Apple notes that not all settings are available on every desktop Mac, and wording can vary by model and macOS version.
For administrators using Terminal or management tools, Apple documents systemsetup options including -setrestartpowerfailure and -setWaitForStartupAfterPowerFailure. The startup-delay value must be 0 or a multiple of 30 seconds. See Apple’s systemsetup command guidance; most users should use the Energy settings instead.
Decide whether a UPS is needed
A UPS can bridge a short power interruption or give the Mac time to shut down cleanly if an outage lasts longer. In Apple menu > System Settings > Energy, look for UPS Options to set when the Mac shuts down while running on UPS battery, by elapsed time or remaining battery level.

Choose capacity based on the equipment you want to keep running—potentially the Mac mini, router and modem—and the runtime you need. A UPS only provides power for its available runtime; the Apple guidance does not establish a particular number of minutes for a given setup. Where supported by the selected UPS, consider its connection and control options as part of the shutdown plan.
Prepare the encoder and YouTube stream
Keep the stream URL and key available securely
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. You enter them in the encoder so it can send the feed to YouTube. YouTube says stream keys are like the stream’s password and address, so keep the key private. Reusing stream settings can retain stream configuration and keys. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live stream settings guidance.

Separate YouTube auto-start from Mac app startup
YouTube’s Auto-start & Auto-stop settings concern starting or stopping a stream from an encoder. They do not establish that macOS will restore a user session or relaunch an encoder after a reboot. Check the current documentation for your specific encoder to determine whether it can launch unattended, reconnect after network loss, recover after a full restart, and resume the same scheduled YouTube stream. Some setups may require a logged-in session or a manual restart; confirm the behavior rather than assuming it.
If your encoder reports a startup error, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends retrieving the current stream key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder: troubleshoot live stream issues.

Test the complete recovery chain
Test before depending on unattended recovery. Use a private or unlisted test stream as appropriate, and verify both the encoder preview and the viewer-facing watch page. YouTube recommends testing the encoder, monitoring preview and stream health, checking event accessibility and exercising backup-encoder failover where configured. Its guidance is available in live streaming tips.
- Confirm that the Mac starts after power is restored.
- Check that any required macOS user session is available.
- Confirm the router, modem and internet connection return.
- Verify that the encoder launches or can be restarted and is sending video and audio.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream health, then confirm the stream appears as expected on the watch page.
- If you use a backup encoder, test failover rather than relying on its presence alone.
Exercise controlled power loss and restoration in a safe test window. Check each stage separately so you can identify whether recovery stopped at the Mac, login session, network, encoder or YouTube.

Common recovery failures and what to check
- The Mac stays off: revisit System Settings > Energy and check the power-failure startup option available on your model. If the Mac has no power, a setting cannot start it until power returns.
- The Mac starts, but there is no broadcast: check the macOS session, network access and encoder process. These are separate from the Mac’s power-on setting.
- The encoder opens but YouTube receives no feed: verify that the encoder is sending video and audio, and check its connection and YouTube stream health.
- The encoder reports a key or startup error: get the current key from Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- The network equipment remains off: check whether the router and modem are on UPS power and whether the outage exceeded the UPS’s available runtime.
- The stream ends despite the encoder restart: verify the stream’s YouTube settings and test whether the encoder can reconnect to that event. Auto-start settings do not restart a local encoder after a Mac reboot.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the stream uses uploaded or playlist video rather than a live camera, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative for keeping a YouTube channel live without leaving the Mac mini running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the service can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.

Does a Mac mini power-failure setting restart YouTube Live?
No. It starts the Mac after power returns; the encoder and YouTube connection must recover separately.

Will YouTube automatically archive a stream after a power cut?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive rule, not a promise that a broadcast will resume after an interruption.
