To stop your Android screen from timing out while Home Assistant is open, enable Keep screen on in the Home Assistant Companion app: open Settings > Companion app, scroll to Other settings, and turn it on. It keeps the display awake while the app’s WebView activity is active; it does not pin the app or bypass the lock screen.

Keep the screen awake while viewing Home Assistant
- Open the Home Assistant Companion app.
- Go to Settings > Companion app.
- Scroll to Other settings.
- Enable Keep screen on.
- Open the dashboard and check that the screen stays awake for your intended use.
Home Assistant documents that this setting prevents the screen from turning off and ignores Android’s built-in Sleep setting while the WebView activity is active. It does not promise to keep the screen awake when Home Assistant is no longer active. Labels or menu placement may differ slightly between app versions. Pin Home Assistant temporarily on a shared phone
App pinning is useful when you hand someone your phone and want Home Assistant to remain the only accessible app. It is separate from the screen-awake setting: pinning restricts app switching, but the display can still time out.
- In Android Settings, find App pinning in the relevant Security settings and enable it. The exact path depends on the Android version and device maker.
- Open Home Assistant and navigate to the dashboard you want to show.
- Open Overview or Recents, tap the Home Assistant app icon, and choose Pin.
- To leave the pinned app, use the unpin gesture or button combination shown for your phone’s navigation mode. Enter the device PIN, pattern, or password if Android asks for it.
Google notes that the steps can vary by Android version. If you cannot find App pinning or the unpin gesture differs, check the device maker’s instructions. Google: Pin & unpin screens.

Make Home Assistant the launcher on a dedicated display
For a phone or tablet used mainly as a Home Assistant display, the Companion app can act as the Android home app. This is a more permanent setup than pinning.
- In Home Assistant, open Settings > Companion app.
- Scroll to Device home screen and enable Use as Home app (launcher).
- When Android’s Change home app screen appears, choose Home Assistant.
- Create a streamlined dashboard for the display, then set it as the default under Home Assistant Settings > Dashboards.
- If different displays need different defaults, consider using a dedicated Home Assistant user for each device.
With Home Assistant as the home app, the Home button returns to Home Assistant and the app opens after a reboot. Normal app-drawer access and Back-button behavior also change, so this is best suited to a dedicated display rather than an everyday phone. Home Assistant Companion: Android Home App (launcher).

What remote screen commands can and cannot do
Home Assistant notification commands include a screen-on command and an optional keep_screen_on command. The screen-on command does not remove or disable Android’s lock screen. The keep-screen-on behavior lasts only while the WebView activity is active.

Other kiosk commands—such as showing a screensaver, opening a camera, changing brightness, reloading, or returning to the default dashboard—are handled only while the Companion app is open in the foreground.
