How to Fix a Home Assistant Dashboard That Looks Wrong on a Phone

Diagnose a phone layout problem by checking the Home Assistant view first, then adjust card sizing or isolate a theme, custom card, or client issue.

Start by checking the affected view’s layout, then identify whether the problem affects the whole view or just one card. Home Assistant views arrange cards in different ways: for example, a Panel view is limited to one full-width card, while a Sidebar view switches to one column on mobile. For a single oversized card in a Sections view, adjust its size in the card’s Layout tab before considering a larger dashboard change.

First identify what looks wrong

Be specific about the symptom before changing settings. Is a card too wide or narrow, text clipped, controls difficult to use, the card order unexpected, or the page simply much longer than it is on desktop? Note whether the issue affects every card or only one.

If you can, compare the same view in your phone’s browser and the Home Assistant Companion App. This is a way to isolate where the difference appears, not proof that either client is at fault. Change one setting at a time and keep track of its original value so you can undo the change.

Check the view layout

Home Assistant’s view types determine how cards are arranged. The available types include Sections, Masonry, Panel, and Sidebar, and they have different layout rules.

View type How it arranges cards What to check on a phone
Sections Groups cards into sections in a grid. Check the sizing of the card that appears too large or too small. Its Layout tab can offer grid sizing controls.
Masonry Arranges cards in columns based on card size. Check whether card sizes and resulting column arrangement explain the unexpected layout.
Panel Displays one card at full width. Confirm that the view is intended to focus on a single card; Panel requires exactly one card.
Sidebar Uses a wide and a smaller column on desktop. On mobile, all cards appear in one column, in the order specified in YAML.

Home Assistant documents the Panel view as requiring exactly one card. It is not a general-purpose multi-card layout. The Sidebar view does not preserve its desktop columns on a phone: the documentation specifies one column on mobile, with cards kept in YAML order.

Resize a card in a Sections view

If the view’s overall arrangement is sensible but a card is the wrong size, use its layout controls rather than changing the whole dashboard.

  3. Use the grid size picker to change the columns and rows the card occupies. You can also select Full width or enable Precise mode for finer sizing.
  4. Check the result on the phone. If the change does not help, use the UI’s option to restore the card’s default size or return to the value you noted.

These controls are described in Home Assistant’s Sections view documentation. The Layout tab is not available for cards inside nested vertical stack, horizontal stack, or grid cards, or for Picture Elements. If it is missing, adjust the outer card or use the affected card type’s own configuration instead.

Understand the trade-off before taking control

An automatically generated dashboard may show a Take control prompt when you try to edit it. Home Assistant warns that taking control stops that dashboard from automatically receiving new dashboard elements as they become available. You can create a new default dashboard, but you cannot return the dashboard you took over to its previous automatic-update behavior.

That makes taking control a consequential choice, not a routine first fix for a phone layout. See Home Assistant’s dashboard documentation for the behavior of automatically generated dashboards.

Isolate a card-specific rendering problem

If the layout is otherwise reasonable and one card still looks wrong, investigate that card rather than assuming the view is broken. Home Assistant dashboards can include community custom cards, whose layout behavior depends on their configuration.

  • For a custom card in a Sections view, check whether its configuration defines suitable default, minimum, and maximum dimensions for the grid. Home Assistant’s dashboard design post explains why card dimensions matter for fitting the Sections layout.

These are diagnostic comparisons, not evidence of a known fault in your installation. If none isolates the cause, the view, card configuration, theme, or phone client may need closer inspection.

Gather details if the problem persists

For a useful community support request, include the Home Assistant version, phone model and screen size, whether you use the app or a browser, the view type, active theme, and names of any custom cards involved. A screenshot can show the symptom; a small, sanitized YAML excerpt can clarify the layout. Remove credentials and avoid exposing private entity names.
