Keep a fluid brand identity consistent by defining what must stay recognizable, what may change, and how each variation should serve its audience, channel, or campaign goal. Treat those decisions as a maintained system—not as separate design choices made from scratch for every asset.
Decide what makes the brand recognizable
Start by identifying a small set of cues that should recur across the campaign family. Depending on the brand, these might include its logo treatment, typography, core colors, layout logic, or call-to-action styling. Choose them from the brand’s strategy and existing identity rules rather than copying another organization’s checklist.

Autodesk’s campaign guidance, for example, treats layout system, color palette, typography, button style, CTA, and logo as fixed elements. Those are Autodesk’s choices, not a universal formula. A brand should preserve the cues that make its own communications identifiable, and make those requirements specific enough for different people to apply consistently.

Fluidity comes from allowing deliberate variation around the recognizable core. Define which elements can change and what should guide those changes. Autodesk lists messaging, CTA wording, imagery, and background color or position as examples of flexible elements.
#1 Best Overall
For each flexible element, state the reason for adapting it. A different message may suit a particular audience; a crop or composition may need to work in a different format; a background treatment may help an image or message read more clearly. Without a purpose, variation can become inconsistency.
Build layouts that adapt without losing their logic
A campaign does not need to use one identical composition everywhere. Zalando’s brand guidance describes a flexible layout system built on the same grid, with layout choices guided by the communication’s purpose. The image, message, format, or co-branding may need priority in different executions.
Translate that principle into a practical set of approved compositions. For example, a template family might provide different arrangements for a message-led placement, an image-led placement, and a placement that includes a partner mark. Keep the underlying layout logic shared, and make clear when each composition is appropriate.

Turn the rules into a usable source of truth
Put current guidance and usable materials in one accessible location. Include approved logos, templates, examples of acceptable adaptations, and the rules for fixed and flexible elements. Flexport describes its brand guideline site as a central hub for identity and assets, and as a living document that is updated often.
Rank #3
A guide is useful only if the people creating campaign assets can find and apply it. Organize it around the decisions they need to make: which assets to use, which elements must remain, what may change, and which layout fits the task. When a recurring exception appears, decide whether it belongs in the approved flex zone or whether the rule itself needs revision, then update the authoritative guide.
Review the campaign as a family
Check representative executions together, not only one asset at a time. Compare them across their intended placements and formats, and ask:
Rank #4
- Are the chosen recognition cues present and legible?
- Does each execution fit its audience, channel, and intended size?
- Does the layout follow the shared system, even when the composition changes?
- Does each variation serve a stated campaign purpose?
- Are changes to flexible elements consistent with the guidance?
These are qualitative review questions, not a published measurement scale. They help teams distinguish purposeful adaptation from accidental drift.

The cited guidance from Autodesk, Zalando, and Flexport offers practical examples of fixed and flexible elements, adaptable layouts, and maintained guidelines. It does not establish one system that fits every brand or provide a general measured campaign-performance effect. Use the principles to make the identity easier to apply and review; do not treat them as proof of a specific lift in recognition, trust, or campaign results.
