How to Keep a Discord Bot Connected to a Local LLM When Your Computer Sleeps or Loses Internet

A local LLM does not make Discord work offline. Keep the host awake or use an always-on machine, supervise the bot, and implement proper Gateway heartbeat, reconnect, and resume handling.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Discord bot can stay connected only while its host is awake, the bot process is running, and the host can reach Discord. A local LLM removes the need for a hosted inference API, but it does not remove Discord’s internet requirement. If your everyday computer sleeps, either prevent sleep for the bot process or move the bot and model to an always-on machine. Then run the bot under a supervisor such as systemd, and use a Discord library that correctly handles Gateway heartbeats, reconnects, and session resume.

When the network fails, the model may continue generating locally, but the bot cannot receive or send Discord traffic until connectivity returns. Recovery depends on whether Discord still considers the Gateway session resumable; otherwise the client must establish a new session.

The three conditions your bot needs

Think of availability as three separate dependencies. A failure in any one of them makes the bot appear offline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Dependency What must be true What breaks it
Host availability The computer is powered on and not suspended, hibernating, or shut down. Sleep, hibernation, power loss, thermal shutdown, or an operating-system update that reboots the machine.
Process availability The Discord bot process and the local-model service are running and able to communicate. Crashes, unhandled exceptions, deadlocks, exhausted memory, or a failed model service.
Network availability The host can resolve and reach Discord’s Gateway and any other services the bot uses. ISP outages, Wi-Fi loss, DNS failures, firewall changes, router reboots, or a disconnected interface.

Keeping the model on the same computer addresses none of these automatically. It only changes where inference happens. Design each dependency and test each failure separately.

Choose where the bot should run

The right deployment depends on how much downtime you can tolerate, how much setup you want, and whether the selected model fits the available hardware. The official model documentation, not a generic mini-PC specification, should determine whether a particular host can run your model at an acceptable speed.

Option Availability Setup effort Power use Hardware and failure coverage
Keep your existing computer awake Good while the computer has power and network access. Low to moderate. Higher than allowing sleep. Uses hardware you already own; does not cover power loss, crashes, or an internet outage.
Run the bot as a supervised service on that computer Recovers from many process failures, but not from sleep or a dead host. Moderate. Same as the host’s normal always-on operation. systemd can restart a failed process; it cannot repair hardware, an ISP outage, or a bad deployment.
Move bot and model to a dedicated always-on host Independent of your everyday computer’s sleep and work sessions. Moderate to high. Depends on the host. Can provide continuous host availability, but still needs supervision, network access, and sufficient resources for the model.

Option 1: Keep the current Linux computer awake

On Linux, systemd-inhibit can hold an inhibitor lock while a command is running. For example:

systemd-inhibit --what=sleep:idle --why='Discord bot must remain available' /usr/local/bin/start-discord-bot

The lock exists only for the lifetime of /usr/local/bin/start-discord-bot. If that command exits, the lock disappears. This is not a permanent-uptime guarantee: it cannot protect against a power cut, network loss, a crash, or every platform-specific sleep path. It also keeps the machine awake only while the command that owns the lock remains alive, so it is normally paired with a service manager rather than used as the sole reliability mechanism.

Check the computer’s lid, battery, and suspend policies as well. A desktop and a laptop may apply different rules, and a firmware or forced shutdown can bypass user-space inhibition. If the bot must run on battery, account for the extra power draw and the possibility that the operating system will still perform an emergency shutdown at a low charge.

Option 2: Use systemd to supervise the process

A service manager gives the bot a defined working directory, user, environment, startup policy, and logs. A minimal unit could look like this:

[Unit]
Description=Discord bot with local LLM
After=network.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=discordbot
WorkingDirectory=/opt/discord-bot
ExecStart=/usr/bin/python3 /opt/discord-bot/bot.py
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Save the unit as /etc/systemd/system/discord-bot.service, then run:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now discord-bot.service
sudo systemctl status discord-bot.service
journalctl -u discord-bot.service -f

Restart=on-failure asks systemd to restart the service after an unsuccessful exit. It does not restart a process that is stuck but still alive, and it does not make a sleeping computer wake up. Repeated restarts usually indicate a configuration, authentication, dependency, or resource problem; inspect the journal rather than masking the symptom with an aggressive restart loop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the bot as a dedicated unprivileged user, keep tokens in a protected environment file or credential mechanism, and make the working directory and model socket permissions explicit. Do not grant the bot more filesystem or administrative access than it needs.

Option 3: Move both services to an always-on host

A separate Linux machine, home server, or other always-on computer removes dependence on your personal laptop’s lid and sleep settings. It does not remove the need for a stable network connection or process supervision. The host must also have enough memory, storage, CPU, and—if the model requires it—GPU capability for the specific local model and context length you selected. The available evidence does not establish a universal hardware size for local inference, so verify the model’s own requirements before buying or repurposing hardware.

Keep the Discord bot and model on the same private network when practical. The bot can call the model over a local socket or private interface without exposing an inference endpoint to the public internet. Treat remote exposure as a separate security project involving authentication, encryption, access controls, and patching; making a service public is not a casual availability fix.

Understand Discord Gateway reconnects

Discord’s Gateway is a persistent WebSocket, not a one-time HTTP request. Discord describes these connections as introducing more complexity than sending HTTP requests or responding to interactions such as slash commands. Your client must maintain the connection for as long as the bot is online.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Heartbeats keep the session healthy

After opening the WebSocket, the client receives a Hello payload containing the heartbeat interval. It must send heartbeats at that interval while connected and track the corresponding acknowledgements. If an acknowledgement is missed, Discord documents terminating the connection and reconnecting to attempt a resume.

Use a maintained Discord library unless you are deliberately implementing the Gateway protocol yourself. A maintained library normally handles Hello, heartbeat timing, acknowledgement tracking, close codes, reconnect delays, and session state. If you implement the protocol directly, treat the heartbeat interval supplied by Discord as authoritative rather than hard-coding a value.

Resume before identifying again

The Ready event supplies the session information needed for resuming, including a session ID and a resume Gateway URL. When a session is still resumable, the client reconnects with that information and Discord can replay events missed during the interruption. A successful resume is different from starting over: it preserves the session and can deliver the events Discord retained for that session.

If resume is unavailable or fails, the client must open a new connection and identify again. Do not respond to every disconnect by blindly identifying in a tight loop. Discord documents an Identify limit of 1,000 calls per 24 hours across an application’s shards. Let the library apply the protocol’s close-code rules and backoff behavior, and log whether each recovery was a resume or a fresh identify.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a reconnect cannot promise

A successful resume can replay missed events, but it is not an indefinite offline queue. Discord’s documentation does not establish that arbitrary-length outages will preserve every message or interaction. If the bot was disconnected too long, the session may no longer be resumable and events that occurred during the outage may not be available to it. For workflows that cannot lose an event, design an explicit external queue or durable state system rather than assuming Gateway replay is permanent.

Make sleep and wake behavior predictable

Decide whether the bot must run on the laptop at all. If the answer is yes, combine a sleep policy with supervision:

  1. Create a dedicated service user and a systemd unit for the bot.
  2. Start the bot through an inhibitor command, or configure the operating system’s power policy so the host does not suspend while the service is required.
  3. Enable the service at boot and verify that it starts after a normal reboot.
  4. Test closing the laptop lid, allowing the display to turn off, and returning from an intentional suspend. These are different transitions on some hardware.
  5. Check systemctl status and the journal after each test. Confirm that the process stayed alive or that systemd restarted it cleanly.

An inhibitor lock should be treated as a narrow control for sleep and idle handling, not as an uptime SLA. A dedicated host is usually the cleaner choice when the computer is also used for travel, meetings, gaming, or battery-powered work.

Handle an internet outage correctly

During an outage, the local model may remain available because its weights and inference process are on the host. The Discord side is different: the bot cannot receive new Gateway events, send replies, acknowledge interactions, or update presence without reaching Discord.

What the bot should do while disconnected

  • Keep the model service running if it is healthy; there is no reason to stop local inference merely because Discord is unreachable.
  • Record the disconnect reason, timestamp, and whether the client is attempting resume.
  • Use the Discord library’s reconnect and backoff behavior instead of creating multiple competing Gateway connections.
  • Stop or queue work that requires a live Discord channel, and make queue limits explicit so a long outage does not exhaust memory.
  • After connectivity returns, allow the client to resume when eligible or identify once for a new session when resume fails.

Do not interpret a successful TCP connection to the local model as proof that the bot is online. Monitor Discord connectivity and inference health as separate signals.

Network startup is not network reliability

On Linux, a service can start before a routable interface exists and then tolerate network changes, or it can fail and rely on systemd to restart it. systemd’s guidance cautions against adding a blanket network-online dependency to every service. Starting after a nominal network target does not guarantee DNS, routing, an internet connection, or access to Discord. Build the bot so it can recover from network changes during its lifetime rather than assuming the network will be perfect at boot.

If your router or ISP regularly drops the connection, test DNS resolution, default routing, firewall rules, and outbound WebSocket access. A service restart may clear a broken socket, but it cannot repair an upstream outage.

Configure the local LLM service separately

Tools such as Ollama can run models locally and expose a local API to the bot. Treat that service as an independent dependency with its own startup, logs, permissions, and resource limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the model loaded when appropriate

Ollama documents a keep_alive parameter for generation and chat requests. That request-level value overrides the OLLAMA_KEEP_ALIVE service setting. This controls how long a model remains loaded after a request; it does not keep the computer awake, restart a crashed bot, or restore Discord connectivity.

On a Linux systemd installation, set a service environment variable with an override:

sudo systemctl edit ollama

Add a service section such as:

[Service]
Environment="OLLAMA_KEEP_ALIVE=10m"

Then apply the change:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl restart ollama
sudo systemctl status ollama

Choose a keep-alive period based on available memory and request frequency. A longer period can reduce model reload latency but keeps resources occupied; a shorter period releases resources sooner. If your bot sends a request with its own keep_alive value, that request takes precedence over the service default.

Separate model failures from bot failures

Have the bot treat model timeouts, connection refusals, malformed responses, and out-of-memory errors as inference failures rather than Gateway failures. Conversely, a Discord disconnect should not be reported as a local-model outage. Separate logs and health checks make it possible to see whether the host, process, network, or model is responsible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a recovery-oriented service layout

A practical layout has four layers:

  1. Host layer: power, sleep policy, storage, temperature, and network interface.
  2. Model layer: the local inference service, model files, API socket, memory limits, and keep-alive policy.
  3. Bot layer: the Discord library, token handling, command processing, request timeouts, and concurrency limits.
  4. Supervision layer: systemd units, restart policy, boot enablement, logs, and alerts.

Keep these layers independently restartable. Restarting the bot should not delete model files. Restarting the model service should produce a clear, bounded error in the bot rather than a permanent Gateway disconnect. A host reboot should bring both services back without requiring an interactive shell.

Test the failure modes before relying on the bot

Run these tests deliberately and record the expected result for your deployment:

  1. Process crash: stop the bot process or terminate it. Confirm systemd restarts it once, the library reconnects, and no duplicate bot processes remain.
  2. Model restart: restart the local inference service while the bot is idle and during a request. Confirm the bot reports a bounded error and succeeds on a later request.
  3. Network interruption: disconnect the host from the network for a controlled period, then restore it. Check logs for a disconnect, resume attempt, or fresh identify.
  4. Sleep transition: use the host’s normal suspend path. If sleep is inhibited, confirm the lock is held only while the service runs. If the host sleeps, confirm the bot reconnects after wake.
  5. Reboot: reboot the host and verify both services start automatically with the intended users, directories, environment, and permissions.
  6. Long outage: leave the network unavailable long enough to exceed your expected session-resume window. Confirm the bot eventually establishes a new session without an identify loop.
  7. Resource pressure: exercise realistic prompts and concurrency. Watch memory, CPU, storage, and model load time so a large request cannot take down both services.

Use a test Discord channel and a non-production bot account where possible. Keep timestamps in the bot and model logs so Gateway events, reconnects, and inference requests can be correlated.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely boundary Checks and corrective action
The bot disappears whenever the laptop lid closes. Host sleep. Check suspend and lid policies, verify the inhibitor command owns a live process, or move the workload to an always-on host.
The process is running but Discord shows the bot offline. Gateway or network. Inspect Gateway close codes, heartbeat acknowledgements, DNS, routing, firewall rules, and whether the client is reconnecting or stuck.
The bot reconnects repeatedly and hits identify limits. Incorrect session handling. Use a maintained library, preserve session information for resume, honor backoff, and stop creating fresh sessions for every transient disconnect.
Local prompts work while Discord commands fail. Discord connectivity. Remember that local inference does not provide an offline Discord channel; restore outbound access and let the Gateway recover.
The first prompt after idle is very slow. Model unloading. Review the keep-alive setting and available memory. A request-level keep_alive value overrides the service default.
The service starts at boot and immediately exits. Configuration or dependency. Read journalctl, verify the service user’s paths and environment, test the model endpoint locally, and avoid assuming that a network target means internet access.
Messages sent during an outage are missing. Non-resumable Gateway session. Do not assume indefinite buffering. If those events are business-critical, add a durable queue or state system designed for that requirement.

Operational checklist

  • Keep the host awake or deploy to a host that is intended to remain on.
  • Run the bot under a dedicated service manager with Restart=on-failure and visible logs.
  • Use a maintained Discord library that implements heartbeats, acknowledgement handling, reconnect, and resume.
  • Preserve the Gateway session ID and resume URL until the library determines that a new identify is required.
  • Separate Discord health, bot-process health, and local-model health checks.
  • Configure model keep-alive deliberately; do not confuse it with host uptime.
  • Design for network changes during runtime instead of relying solely on a boot-time network dependency.
  • Set bounded request, queue, and memory limits.
  • Protect the Discord token and local-model endpoint.
  • Test crash, sleep, reboot, model restart, and network-outage recovery before calling the deployment reliable.

The dependable pattern is therefore straightforward: place the workload on an awake host, supervise both processes, let a proper Discord Gateway client manage heartbeats and session recovery, and treat internet access as a separate requirement from local inference. No local model can make Discord available while the host has no path to Discord.
