You can minimize OBS to the system tray while it continues sending a prerecorded video to YouTube. Minimizing hides OBS; it does not make the stream more reliable or protect it from a sleeping computer, lost power, network failure, OBS closing, or YouTube disconnecting. Set up and test the loop, confirm the stream in YouTube Live Control Room, then minimize OBS only after the stream is active.
Set up the prerecorded stream in OBS
- Connect OBS to the right YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, create or select the scheduled encoder stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings). Keep the key private; do not put it in a public screenshot or share it with people who should not control the stream.
- Add and loop the video. In the OBS scene that will be live, add the prerecorded file as a Media Source and enable Loop to repeat one file. For a playlist, add a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. Keep the source visible in the active scene. OBS documents VLC Video’s visibility behavior with the default “Stop when not visible, restart when visible,” so hiding that source can affect playback (OBS Project: Media Sources).
- Check the whole scene. Confirm that the video appears in the OBS preview, audio is audible at an appropriate level, and the file or playlist actually returns to the beginning when it ends. If the scene has other sources layered over the video, verify that the prerecorded content remains visible.
- Start the encoder before the service. For scheduled encoder streams, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Check the preview in Live Control Room before selecting Go live (YouTube Help: Manage a live stream).
- Minimize OBS after confirming the stream is active. Use the normal minimize control to hide the window to the system tray if your system and OBS settings support it. OBS also documents launch parameters
--minimize-to-tray(“Start minimized to system tray”) and--startstreaming(“Automatically start streaming”); test any launch automation before using it for a service (OBS Project: Launch Parameters).
What minimizing OBS does—and does not do
OBS remains the encoder: it reads the media source and sends the feed to YouTube. Minimizing the interface is not the same as stopping the stream, provided OBS continues running and the source remains active. But minimizing is only a window-management action. The cited OBS and YouTube instructions do not say it prevents the computer from sleeping or shutting down, fixes weak upload capacity, or recovers from power loss, an OBS crash, or a YouTube-side disconnection.

Before relying on this arrangement for a service, check the computer’s power and sleep settings and the stability of its internet connection separately. Do a local end-to-end test, including the loop transition, and keep a way to check the stream after minimizing OBS.

Monitor the stream and end it deliberately
- Watch the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room, and test the public watch page on the devices your congregation is likely to use. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring audio and video quality (YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips).
- If your plan includes a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it will work. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance recommends testing backup arrangements.
- When the service is over, use YouTube’s End Stream control and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat that as a universal archive guarantee for streams lasting 12 hours or longer.
If the current setup is unreliable
If you are considering a hardware encoder instead of a computer running OBS, verify the exact model against the church’s unattended prerecorded workflow before buying. YouTube’s verified-encoder listings do not, by themselves, establish that a listed device can play your particular file or playlist without a computer. Check that it can:
