If the source folder is empty, looping cannot supply new footage: switch to a fallback scene that uses no files in that folder, then restore authorized media and verify YouTube is receiving the encoder feed. A cloud playlist service can keep prepared uploads running without a local computer, but it cannot replace missing content.
Why an empty folder stops the loop
OBS can loop a single media file or loop a playlist supplied through its VLC Video Source. Those settings repeat available, readable media; they do not create a video when the file or playlist is empty or unavailable. OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources documentation (dated January 11, 2022).

So treat this as two separate problems: keep a valid visual feed on air during the gap, and restore authorized source media before returning to normal programming.
Keep a fallback scene ready in OBS
Build a scene independent of the missing folder
Create an emergency scene using a background and a text element, for example: “Programming is temporarily unavailable; please check back.” Use OBS elements that do not depend on files in the empty directory. This is a practical fallback workflow based on OBS’s documented scene sources and media-loop controls, not a feature that automatically repairs an empty playlist.

If silence is not suitable for your channel, arrange an authorized audio fallback stored separately from the missing media. Do not assume that an empty video folder contains any playable audio.
Switch when playback runs out or fails
When the playlist ends or its media cannot be read, switch to the fallback scene in OBS. A loop option only helps if its file or playlist items exist and are readable. Keep the fallback simple enough that it does not itself rely on the failed source.

Restore the playlist and check the live feed
- Replenish the source folder. Add media that you own or are authorized to broadcast. Do not use the outage as a reason to fill the playlist with unlicensed music, video, or other material.
- Check the replacement files. Before putting them on air, look for missing audio, damaged frames, long black sections, and inconsistent formats that could interrupt playback or make the stream unsuitable.
- Return to the normal scene or playlist. Confirm the intended files are present and readable, then switch back deliberately rather than assuming the old loop has recovered.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm YouTube is receiving the encoder feed and inspect stream health after the change. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings explains the stream URL and key connection and the auto-start and auto-stop controls.
Protect the stream key
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not share the key publicly. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement key; otherwise YouTube may receive a feed from an unintended encoder.

Base the choice on whether replacement content exists, whether you need local scene control, and whether you want the computer, network, and power dependencies of a local encoder. Do not treat any method as a guarantee of uninterrupted availability: outages, invalid keys, and source-file problems can still stop a stream.
