Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer when your clips have compatible streams and you want to avoid re-encoding. Use the concat filter when you need to normalize or process clips and are prepared to re-encode them. Neither choice alone guarantees a seamless loop or a healthy YouTube stream: check the files, test the clip boundaries, and configure and monitor the live output.
Which concat method should you choose?
| Your need or input condition | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Clips have matching streams, codecs, and time bases, and you want to avoid another encode | Concat demuxer | It joins packets consecutively rather than decoding and re-encoding them. See the FFmpeg documentation and FFmpeg FAQ. |
| Clips need normalization or filter processing, or the workflow requires re-encoding | Concat filter | FFmpeg recommends the filter approach when re-encoding is needed. See the FFmpeg FAQ. |
| You are unsure whether the files are compatible or their durations are accurate | Inspect and test before going live | Stream properties and duration inaccuracies can affect the demuxer’s timestamps and continuity. See the FFmpeg documentation. |
| The stream will run for many hours | Plan archive behavior and monitor the stream | YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer stream will be archived as one complete video. See YouTube’s encoder workflow guidance. |
How the concat demuxer works—and where it can fail
The concat demuxer reads a text list of files and presents their packets consecutively, as if they had been muxed together. It shifts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and subsequent files follow it. This is a packet-level joining method, not a general-purpose way to make different media files alike.

FFmpeg requires the files to have the same streams, including matching codecs and time bases. Differences in stream layout or other relevant properties can make the demuxer unsuitable; inspect the actual inputs against the requirements of your installed FFmpeg version. If streams within the files do not have exactly matching lengths, global timestamp adjustment can create gaps. Incorrect or estimated durations can also cause artifacts, and a list-file duration directive can override a duration. These behaviors are described in the FFmpeg documentation.

When the concat filter is the better fit
The concat filter is the starting point when clips need to be decoded and re-encoded—for example, to normalize mismatched inputs or apply filter processing. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the filter for workflows that need re-encoding and the demuxer when avoiding re-encoding is the goal. Re-encoding gives you a path to a consistent output, but it adds an encode step; it is not the packet-copy route.
Choose based on what the files require, not just on the fact that they will be played in a loop. Check stream layout, codec and time-base properties, resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and duration before settling on the method. If a file needs normalization or processing, plan for the filter-and-re-encode route rather than assuming the demuxer will adapt it.

Check and test the playlist before using it live
- Inspect every input. Establish whether the files expose matching streams, codecs, and time bases, and note their durations. No specific media files or probe output are available here, so compatibility cannot be determined for an unseen playlist.
- Select the join method. Use the demuxer for compatible assets when avoiding re-encoding matters; use the filter when re-encoding, normalization, or filtering is required.
- Run a finite test first. Review the joined output and listen and watch across each boundary. In particular, check the transition from the final clip back to the first.
- Verify looping behavior for your build and input arrangement. Looping and output timing are separate from the concat method. Check the help or documentation for your installed FFmpeg version and test the exact arrangement before relying on it; there is no universal loop command established here for every build and playlist.
- Test the live output and monitor it. YouTube advises testing the stream, including audio and motion, then monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast.
Set the YouTube encoder output
For live ingestion, YouTube currently lists RTMP/RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate: the current H.264 table lists 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations accessed on October 3, 2026, not performance results for a particular FFmpeg command. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the output you intend to send.

Connect the encoder and plan for long streams
- In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the live stream URL and stream key.
- Enter those values in your encoder’s connection settings, taking care to keep the key private.
- Start with a test and confirm the incoming stream, audio, motion, and stream-health status before relying on a long-running broadcast.
- Plan around YouTube’s archive behavior: streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so a stream that runs longer should not be assumed to become one complete archived video.
These connection and archive details are covered by YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.
Troubleshoot common concat and live-stream problems
- The demuxer rejects a file or the joined output behaves unexpectedly: compare the files’ stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. If the inputs require normalization or filter processing, switch to a concat-filter workflow with re-encoding.
- There is a gap, jump, or artifact at a boundary: check timestamp alignment and file durations. FFmpeg notes that duration inaccuracies and streams with non-matching lengths can affect timestamp adjustment. Review the output around the boundary and test the last-to-first transition separately.
- The join works, but looping does not behave as expected: treat looping as a separate configuration from concatenation. Verify the option and its placement for your installed FFmpeg build and exact input arrangement, then test a finite run.
- YouTube reports stream-health problems: confirm the encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance, check the selected stream URL and key, and monitor YouTube’s health messages. Ensure the connection has the recommended upload headroom.
- The archive is incomplete or not a single full-length recording: account for YouTube’s stated automatic-archive behavior for streams under 12 hours; do not assume a longer loop will be archived as one complete video.
Or let it run in the cloud
