This can restart a failed encoder process; it does not guarantee that YouTube stays live indefinitely. You also need the correct RTMPS URL and protected stream key, suitable encoding settings, and a plan for YouTube event boundaries.
What systemd can—and cannot—keep running
systemd supervises a local process. With Restart=on-failure and a chosen RestartSec= delay, it can restart FFmpeg after an unexpected failure. Automatic restarts are subject to systemd start-rate limits, so a process that repeatedly exits may eventually stop being retried until the issue is addressed. See the systemd service documentation.

A running service is not proof of a healthy broadcast. systemd cannot repair a bad stream key, an unavailable input, an encoding problem, an internet outage, a host outage, or a YouTube ingest issue. Check the local process and logs, then separately check YouTube’s preview and stream status.
Prepare the YouTube stream and encoding settings
Copy the RTMPS address and protect the key
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and copy the stream URL and stream key for the intended stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP; if the control room displays an RTMP address by default, reveal and use the RTMPS address. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address,” so treat the key as a credential. Keep it out of publicly readable scripts, logs, and shell-history commands. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder. See Manage live stream settings.

Choose settings for the actual video and connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It recommends AAC or MP3 audio and provides further audio settings. Use its bitrate table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream. The examples below are YouTube recommendations, not measurements of your server’s available upload capacity:
- H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps: 10 Mbps recommended.
- H.264 at 720p and 30 fps: 6 Mbps recommended.
Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table when you configure the stream; the recommendations can change. Confirm that the host can encode at the chosen settings (if encoding on the host) and sustain the required outbound bitrate. Available bandwidth and encoding capacity depend on the media and deployment.

Create a systemd service for FFmpeg
Store credentials outside public scripts
Use a root-controlled credentials file with restrictive permissions, and verify that the key does not appear in logs. The example below is an illustrative unit, not a tested universal FFmpeg command. Replace the placeholders with arguments supported by your installed FFmpeg build and media, and arrange for the credential to be supplied without exposing it in a publicly readable file or shell history. The precise command, input, executable path, account permissions, and shutdown behavior depend on your host.

The ExecStart line is a template: the placeholder syntax is not an FFmpeg command, and this example does not establish universal reconnection flags or compatibility. Test the exact FFmpeg command and input on the intended server before relying on it.

Reload, enable, start, and inspect the service
- After creating or editing the unit, reload systemd’s unit files and enable the service for boot while starting it now:
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadsudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.service - Check whether systemd considers the service active:
systemctl status youtube-stream.service - Inspect recent service output for FFmpeg errors or other clues:
journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager - In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the expected event receives a preview and reports the intended stream status. A successful systemd start alone does not confirm that usable video is reaching YouTube.
Restart=on-failure is intended for failures, not an operator-requested stop. Choose a retry delay appropriate to your service and diagnose repeated exits rather than assuming retries are unlimited. Consult the systemd manual for restart behavior and start-rate limits.
Plan for YouTube event boundaries
A 24/7 encoder process and a single YouTube live event that remains live indefinitely are different things. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement is about archiving, not a guarantee that one event can run without limit or that systemd will create a successor event. Decide whether you need one scheduled event, repeated events, or a presentation that returns to a new event. In Live Control Room, verify the event schedule, auto-start and auto-stop choices, and the archive behavior you intend. YouTube documents auto-start and auto-stop as encoder-controlled options when enabled. See Manage live stream settings and YouTube live streaming troubleshooting.

Verify the whole path, not just the process
- Service: confirm the unit is active with
systemctl statusand review its logs withjournalctl. - Input and encoding: make sure the media is readable and progressing, and that FFmpeg is not exiting or reporting encoding errors.
- Network and ingest: check that the server can sustain the selected outbound bitrate and that YouTube receives a preview on the correct event.
- Event state: confirm that the intended event is live and that its auto-start, auto-stop, and archive behavior match your plan.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance points creators toward checking the encoder or key and the internet connection when a stream has problems. Restarting FFmpeg may restore a transient process failure, but it will not correct a bad configuration or an unavailable dependency.
