You can run a continuous, radio-style YouTube Live feed from an Indian VPS by playing a rights-cleared playlist through an encoder such as FFmpeg and sending it to YouTube over RTMPS. The VPS keeps the process running when your personal computer is off; it does not guarantee a stable broadcast. You still need suitable CPU and outbound bandwidth, process supervision, monitoring, a recovery plan and rights for every audio and visual element.
Check YouTube Live access before renting a VPS
Before paying for a server, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and confirm the channel can go live. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance requires a verified channel, no livestream restriction in the previous 90 days, and a creator who is at least 16 years old. Plan the channel’s content and presentation as well as its technical setup. A server can repeat a playlist, but it cannot make material you do not have rights to safe for a public livestream.
Understand the VPS-to-YouTube setup
The basic chain is: rights-cleared audio and visuals → encoder running on an always-on Linux VPS → YouTube Live ingest → viewers. FFmpeg is one possible encoder for this kind of workflow, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee that a particular VPS can handle the workload.

A VPS replaces the need to leave your own computer running. It does not remove the need to configure the encoder, provide enough sustained upload capacity, supervise the process, respond to stream-health problems or meet YouTube’s rules.
Choose a VPS for the actual stream, not the lowest headline price
There is no established universal minimum VPS specification or verified Indian provider price for this job. Requirements depend on the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec and whether the server must encode or simply send already-prepared media. Check the provider’s current terms and resources for the exact workload before subscribing.
- India-region availability: confirm the location of the instance you can actually provision.
- CPU allocation: check the sustained resources available to your process, particularly if the VPS will encode video rather than pass through prepared media.
- Outbound transfer: estimate monthly traffic from the stream’s bitrate and run time, then compare it with the plan’s allowance. Check throttling and fair-use terms, not just a headline transfer figure.
- Network stability: look for details on network limits and the provider’s restart or reboot policies; test the connection under your actual workload.
- Storage: allow for playlist files and any local recording you plan to keep.
- Operations and support: consider monitoring, recovery controls and support availability alongside the monthly charge.
For a rough traffic estimate, a constant 1 Mbps stream transfers about 10.8 GB in 24 hours before protocol overhead. Multiply by the planned bitrate and run time, then leave headroom for overhead, reconnects and any other server traffic. This is a planning estimate, not a provider allowance or performance guarantee.

Compare providers against the same workload and current plan terms. A low monthly price alone cannot establish that a VPS has enough sustained CPU, network capacity or included transfer for an always-on stream.

Set YouTube ingest and encoder settings
Get the ingest URL and protect the stream key
YouTube accepts RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, retrieve the RTMPS server URL and stream key, then enter them in your encoder. Keep the key secret: put it in a restricted configuration file or secret store rather than a public script, repository or log. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio. Choose a profile YouTube and the VPS can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which must not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube lists a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps. Exact bitrate needs depend on codec, resolution and frame rate, so use YouTube’s current encoder settings for the profile you select.

These are YouTube encoder targets, not a VPS sizing guarantee. For an audio-led station, choose a modest visual profile that suits the content rather than spending CPU and transfer on unnecessary resolution. Confirm the server’s sustained upload can support the selected bitrate with headroom; a speed test alone does not prove the connection will remain stable around the clock.

Test before relying on a continuous feed
Use representative audio and visuals, start a private or otherwise limited test where appropriate, and check the stream’s health and messages in YouTube Studio. YouTube recommends checking upload speed and monitoring stream health during a live event. Verify that the audio is audible and continuous, the visual element behaves as intended, and the stream reconnects as expected after a controlled interruption.
Keep the encoder supervised and recoverable
A VPS can continue running while your home computer is off, but a process may still crash, lose network access or be interrupted by a server reboot. Treat supervision and recovery as part of the design, rather than assuming that a successful launch means the channel will stay live indefinitely.
- Run the encoder under a process supervisor or service manager that starts it after boot and restarts it after a crash.
- Configure access so only the required account can read the stream key and media files.
- Monitor both the encoder process and YouTube’s stream-health status; a running process does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
- Set up alerts for process exit, prolonged loss of ingest or server reboot where your chosen monitoring tools support them.
- Document how to inspect logs, restart the encoder, replace a compromised key and return to a known-good playlist.
- Test a crash and a server reboot deliberately before depending on the setup, and confirm that the encoder returns and the YouTube feed recovers.
The exact service configuration and recovery time depend on your operating system, encoder and provider. No one command or service file fits every VPS setup.

YouTube’s livestream terms require the broadcaster to have the necessary rights for the live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers and other royalty participants. YouTube also requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines. Read the YouTube livestream terms and conditions and confirm that your permissions cover a public YouTube livestream and any archive, not merely ordinary playback or possession of an audio file.

YouTube says that all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If a match is identified, YouTube may replace the feed with a placeholder and warn the creator; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. If you have licensed third-party content, YouTube says to ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Which licenses apply to a particular Indian music catalog depends on the works and rights holders involved. Confirm your rights with the relevant owners or a qualified local adviser; a VPS does not change those obligations.
Plan separately for replays and long broadcasts
YouTube says a livestream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 broadcast should therefore not be treated as a reliably archived replay. Consult YouTube’s archive guidance.
If you need a replay, keep a local recording if your server’s storage and resources permit, and consider planned shorter broadcast segments. Test the archive process with your own channel and workflow; recording and segmentation introduce their own storage, bandwidth and operational requirements.
