Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can make a YouTube encoder start again after a VPS reboot by running it as a boot-enabled system service and configuring it to retry its connection. A reboot still stops the process and interrupts the outgoing feed, so this is automatic recovery—not a guarantee of uninterrupted viewing. After each reboot, verify that YouTube is receiving the stream and that the event is available to viewers.
What a VPS reboot does to a 24/7 stream
If your encoder runs on the VPS that reboots, the reboot stops that encoder process and cuts its connection to YouTube. The practical goal is to have the process launch automatically when the server returns, reconnect when networking and YouTube ingest are available, and then confirm the feed is healthy. A service manager can relaunch a process; it cannot guarantee that the VPS, network, media source, stream key, or YouTube event is ready.

Set up automatic startup and reconnection
- Identify the actual encoder command or application. Record its media source, YouTube Live server URL, stream key, and any options needed to run unattended. The exact configuration depends on the VPS operating system, distribution, systemd version, encoder, and source; there is no universal unit file or retry setting established for every setup.
- Run it under a system-level service manager. Do not rely on starting the encoder manually in an interactive SSH session. With systemd, create or configure a service for the encoder and ensure it is associated with the system boot target.
- Enable boot startup, then start the service. In systemd, enabling a unit arranges for it to start during boot; starting it launches it now. These are separate actions. Confirm the unit is enabled and starts successfully on your particular VPS before relying on it.
- Provide the stream destination and credential securely. Configure the encoder with YouTube’s Live server URL and stream key through an appropriate protected configuration mechanism. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Restrict access to the key and reset it if it is exposed.
- Configure reconnection behavior for your encoder. The encoder may start before network routing or YouTube ingest is ready. Use the retry or reconnect controls documented for that encoder, and test their behavior; the precise options and a suitable delay vary by implementation.
- Reboot deliberately and verify end to end. After a planned test reboot, inspect the service logs, YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health, and the viewer-facing watch page. A service that reports itself active does not prove YouTube is receiving a usable feed.
Check the YouTube encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder guide has you enter the Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. For scheduled streams, it describes waiting for the preview and then selecting Go live. Do not assume that an encoder reconnect automatically resumes the same event in every configuration: YouTube’s settings include auto-start and auto-stop, but the behavior depends on the selected settings and event workflow, so test them.
Transport, codec, and output profile
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its current encoder guide lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Select a bitrate appropriate to the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, and check that your VPS upload speed can sustain it. These are output settings, not a guarantee of recovery after a reboot.

Protect and recover the stream key
YouTube says custom stream keys can be reused and provides a reset flow if a key is compromised. Keep the key out of public scripts, logs, and shared shell history where possible, and limit who can read the encoder configuration. If a third-party encoder reports an error when starting, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to copy the stream key from Live Control Room and paste it into the encoder. For a login-based integration without a stream key, YouTube advises contacting the software vendor.
Test recovery rather than assuming it
Before leaving a stream unattended, rehearse the failure you need to handle. YouTube recommends testing the encoder, checking the preview before going live, monitoring audio and video quality, and verifying that viewers can access the event. Its failover test recommendation is to stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet and check whether the player rolls over to a backup encoder. That is a separate arrangement from restarting one encoder after a VPS reboot; do not promise a seamless viewer experience unless the failover setup has been tested.

Plan separately for 24-hour archives
YouTube says all streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a continuous stream exceeding 12 hours will be archived as one video. If you need a complete recording of a 24/7 broadcast, plan and verify a separate recording or archive workflow rather than relying on the automatic archive.
Choose between a self-hosted encoder and a cloud service
Keeping the encoder on the same VPS is a straightforward way to retain control of the media source and service configuration, but the feed is interrupted during reboot and recovery depends on the VPS network, process startup, and YouTube accepting the reconnection. A managed cloud encoder or relay can move the streaming process outside that VPS, which may make sense when you want streaming operations decoupled from VPS maintenance. Compare recovery behavior, monitoring, source control, and cost, and verify the provider’s specific capabilities and terms. Neither design alone proves uninterrupted viewing.
