Choose how to keep the YouTube stream running
YouTube supports software and hardware encoders for sending a live feed. Its encoder directory lists OBS as free, open-source software, and also lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuous streams of prerecorded video. The listing is not a comparative reliability or pricing assessment.

For the local OBS route below, first confirm that live streaming is enabled on your channel. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Clear the rights before assembling the loop
Use birdsong audio and visual material that you have created or are licensed to use on YouTube for the intended duration, territory, and monetization. A recording being available online does not establish permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube says copyright matches or strikes can affect livestreaming; review its copyright guidance and Content ID overview before going live.

Build two scenes and a continuous audio bed
In OBS, create two named scenes, such as Dawn and Dusk. Add the corresponding still image or video to each scene. Add a looping birdsong file as a Media Source; OBS Media Source can play and loop a media file. If you need a playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source can loop one, but VLC must be installed.
To avoid audio cutting out when the visual scene changes, arrange the audio as a source shared across both scenes or otherwise configure it to continue across the transition. This is a production choice, not an automatic synchronization guarantee: test your exact scene and source setup for clicks, gaps, black frames, and source reloads. Choose a consistent canvas and output format for both scenes.

Schedule dawn and dusk scene changes in OBS
- Install OBS and set up the scenes. Create the Dawn and Dusk scenes, add their visual sources, then configure the looping birdsong source. OBS includes Cut and Fade transitions; select one and check how it looks and sounds with your media.
- Install OBS Advanced Scene Switcher. The plugin’s updates describe a Macro Schedule tab that can execute macro actions at a specified date and time. Use a macro action that switches the active scene, and schedule the dawn and dusk changes you want.
- Set the intended time zone and dates. Choose times for your location and artistic transition window. There is no universal dawn/dusk schedule: daylight times vary by location and date, so decide whether the scenes should follow local sunrise/sunset or a fixed creative timetable.
- Test both transitions before relying on them. Verify the right scene becomes active, the audio continues, and the transition behaves as expected. Test what happens after restarting OBS and after restarting the computer; do not assume a schedule resumes correctly without checking your configuration.
The plugin documentation establishes scheduling capability, not a ready-made sunrise calculator or a particular transition schedule. You will need to choose and maintain the times yourself.

Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a livestream. Select the visibility you want: public, private, or unlisted. Scheduling can surface an upcoming stream to subscribers. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance also covers stream keys, DVR, and rights-management settings.
- Copy the stream key and enter it in OBS. In YouTube’s stream setup, copy the stream key and the stream URL/settings shown for the encoder. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube if available, and connect the account or enter the stream key as prompted. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, source files, or the public stream.
- Start the OBS feed and check YouTube’s preview. Confirm that the birdsong is audible, the current scene is correct, and the video is not black or frozen before you make the stream public or begin the scheduled event.
- Go live and verify the viewer-facing result. Check the channel or watch page, including on a mobile device. Keep an eye on stream health and on the actual audio/video output rather than assuming that an active encoder means the audience is receiving a good feed.
YouTube distinguishes a liveBroadcast, the watchable event and distinct video, from a liveStream, the transmitted audio/video settings. Its Live Streaming API supports scheduled or recurring events and documents a 24/7 feed continuing while another broadcast is bound to the same stream. That API route can help creators who need separate event pages, but it adds implementation complexity; it is optional for a straightforward OBS stream. Monitor the feed and plan for restarts
YouTube recommends preparing in advance, checking the preview, verifying local archive files, checking access on the channel/watch pages and mobile devices, and continuously monitoring audio and video. Its event guidance suggests setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. Those are recommendations for scheduled events, not guarantees or special requirements for a 24/7 deployment. Details are in YouTube’s encoder livestreaming guidance.
- Check the watch page and stream health regularly; confirm that both the picture and birdsong are still present.
- Keep a local recording if you need a replay or backup. Check the recording file rather than assuming it is usable.
- Decide how you will respond if OBS, the computer, or the internet connection stops. A locally hosted stream depends on those parts being available.
- Protect the stream key and limit access to the YouTube channel and streaming computer.
Will YouTube save a 24-hour livestream?
Do not rely on YouTube to archive one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. YouTube Help says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It also warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. That guidance was accessed in 2026; make a local recording if retaining the full program matters. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Audience settings, copyright, and monetization caveats
If you mark the stream as made for kids, YouTube lists functions such as live chat and reminder notifications as disabled or restricted, and personalized ads are disabled on livestreams and Premieres. Do not plan around standard chat or monetization functions without checking the current made-for-kids feature guidance. The correct audience setting depends on the content and intended audience; it should not be chosen just to enable features.

Troubleshoot common problems
