OBS’s automatic reconnect can help after a temporary network drop, but it will not relaunch OBS after an update or computer reboot. To recover a local 24/7 YouTube radio stream, schedule updates for a low-audience window, configure the computer to start OBS with the right profile and scene, and verify that YouTube is receiving the feed before treating the stream as restored. A reboot can interrupt playback; neither OBS nor YouTube promises seamless continuation through one.
Reconnect is not the same as restart recovery
These are two separate problems. OBS automatic reconnect is intended to help when an active OBS session temporarily loses its network connection. If OBS closes or the computer restarts for an update, reconnect cannot help until OBS is running again. That requires startup automation in the operating system.

Even after OBS relaunches, the stream is not confirmed recovered until YouTube receives the signal and the intended broadcast is active. Plan for a pause rather than promising viewers uninterrupted playback.

- Choose a maintenance window. Apply OBS and operating-system updates when the audience is likely to be lowest. If the station depends on uninterrupted listening, tell listeners in advance that playback may pause.
- Prepare a fallback if your setup supports one. A holding slate or audio message can make a planned interruption clearer, but it does not keep the original OBS stream running during a restart.
- Check the broadcast configuration. Keep the YouTube stream key private. It is the credential OBS uses to send the feed; if you reset the key in YouTube, replace the saved key in OBS before streaming again.
- Review scheduled-broadcast behavior. Check YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings for the scheduled stream. YouTube notes that reusing stream settings also carries those selections forward, so confirm them when creating or reusing an event.
- Record the OBS setup that should return. Identify the profile and scene used by the station. A launch that starts streaming with the wrong scene can be technically live but still send the wrong picture or audio.
Configure OBS to start streaming after a reboot
Use OBS’s launch parameter
OBS Project documents the --startstreaming launch parameter as automatically starting the stream. Add it to the OBS launch command used by your startup automation. If the station relies on a named OBS profile or scene, configure the automated launch to use that intended setup as well; verify the exact profile and scene arguments against the OBS version and launch method you use, because the available evidence does not establish one universal cross-platform command.

On Windows, configure the scheduled launch carefully
For a Windows Scheduled Task or another automated launch of obs64.exe, OBS documentation says to set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. Use the task’s program/command field for the OBS executable and its launch parameters, and set the working directory separately. Test the task rather than assuming a task that works when run interactively will behave identically at boot.
There is no single verified task-scheduler recipe here for every Windows version or for macOS and Linux. In any operating system, the essential requirements are that the startup mechanism launches OBS after reboot, selects the station’s intended configuration, and invokes streaming only when the network is ready.

Enable reconnect for interruptions while OBS is open
OBS lists automatic reconnect among its Advanced settings. Enable it for transient network interruptions during an otherwise-running OBS session. Treat it as a complement to boot automation, not a replacement: it does not itself open OBS after the process has stopped or the computer has restarted.
Prevent a boot-time network race
After a power failure or reboot, the computer may finish starting before the router or internet connection is ready. A 2024 OBS forum response describes a case where automatic reconnect did not solve an initial connection failure. That is community experience, not an official guarantee, but it points to a practical precaution: delay the automated OBS launch and use a retry or monitoring step so a momentarily unavailable connection does not leave the station offline.

Do not assume that a single startup attempt succeeded. Check the computer’s network connection, confirm OBS is running and sending, and then check YouTube’s receiving status. If OBS opened before the network recovered, retry streaming after connectivity returns.
Verify the stream in OBS and YouTube Studio
- OBS: Confirm the intended profile and scene loaded, the stream is active, and the meters or preview indicate the expected audio and video.
- YouTube Live Control Room: Confirm that YouTube shows an incoming signal and stream health, and that the correct scheduled event is selected.
- Actual content: Check that audio and video are present, not merely that an encoder status indicator says it is streaming.
- Archive expectations: YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is not a promise that a stream interrupted by a reboot will resume as one continuous archive or without viewer interruption.
Common recovery failures
