What a Windows update can—and cannot—do to your stream
Your encoder sends video to YouTube from the computer running it. If Windows restarts to finish an update, that encoder stops sending until Windows is back up and you restart the encoder. YouTube’s update controls can reduce the chance of an inconvenient restart, not guarantee uninterrupted streaming. YouTube describes the stream key as a credential like the stream’s password and address, so keep it private. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Plan for two distinct tasks: move routine maintenance into a window when a brief interruption is acceptable, and make sure you can restore the broadcast after a reboot. If the requirement is no interruption during maintenance on the Windows PC, you need a separate continuity path rather than a setting on that same PC.

1. Set Active hours
- On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours.
- Choose automatic active hours or set them manually to cover the period when the PC needs to remain available for the stream.
Active hours help Windows avoid inconvenient restarts, but they do not prevent every restart. Microsoft notes that a PC may occasionally need to restart to finish installing updates. Its current guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10; Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. See Microsoft’s Active hours instructions.

2. Schedule a pending restart
If Windows Update says a restart is required, use its Schedule the restart control to choose a maintenance window rather than leaving the timing to chance. Windows tries to restart when the device is not in use, but an unattended stream does not necessarily look like active use to Windows. 3. Pause only as a short-term measure
If an update is about to interrupt an important stream, a temporary pause can buy time to reach a planned window. Microsoft’s current pause guidance allows a pause end date up to 35 days from the current date; updates resume when the pause expires. Treat that as a deadline to install updates and reboot deliberately, not as a permanent way to avoid maintenance. Labels and options can vary with Windows version and update state. Rehearse the reboot and recovery before relying on it
Do a full rehearsal when a short interruption is acceptable. The exact startup behavior depends on your encoder and Windows configuration; the following is an operational check, not a guarantee that a particular unattended boot sequence will work.
- Save your encoder configuration and make sure you know which YouTube broadcast it should send to.
- Restart Windows deliberately and allow update setup to finish. Sign in, check whether Windows still has another restart pending, and schedule it rather than leaving it unresolved.
- Launch the encoder and confirm it is sending to the intended YouTube stream URL and key. In YouTube Live Control Room, verify the incoming preview and stream health.
- Open the public watch page and confirm the broadcast is accessible and playing as expected.
YouTube recommends testing the stream and monitoring its health. Its encoder guide explains connecting an encoder and starting a stream: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Keep the stream key out of screenshots, logs and scripts that others can access.

If Windows has already restarted and the lofi stream is offline
- Sign in and let Windows finish any update setup. If another restart is pending, schedule it for a maintenance window before restoring a long-running broadcast.
- Start the encoder. Check that its stream URL, stream key and selected broadcast are the ones you intend to use.
- Check the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room, then verify the public watch page. Do not assume the stream is back just because the encoder window is open.
- If the encoder reports an invalid key or cannot connect, copy the current key from Live Control Room into the encoder and try again. Rotating the key without a reason can create another configuration mismatch; if you do rotate it, update the encoder too.

Choose a continuity path if a reboot cannot take the stream down
Planned maintenance on the same PC
Active hours, scheduled restarts, and a rehearsed restart-and-reconnect procedure are the simplest approach when occasional planned interruptions are acceptable. The trade-off is fundamental: during an actual reboot, the local encoder stops sending.

Tested backup encoder
YouTube recommends configuring a backup encoder for stronger resilience. Its guidance suggests testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then confirming that the player rolls over. That advice concerns a separately configured backup path; it does not establish that a single PC reboot will be invisible to viewers. Keep the key private
A stream key authorizes the encoder to send to your YouTube stream. Treat it as a password: do not publish it or expose it in a screenshot, log or shared script. If you change the key, update the encoder configuration so it uses the new one. YouTube explains stream key management in Manage live stream settings.
Do not assume a 24/7 stream is automatically archived
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish the same automatic archive behavior for a continuous 24/7 broadcast. If an archive matters, verify the available recording and retention options for your setup rather than relying on that under-12-hour guidance. See YouTube’s encoder guide.

Common failures and what to check
- The PC restarted and the channel went offline: Windows rebooted, so the local encoder stopped. Finish update setup, launch the encoder, and verify the preview and public watch page.
- The encoder says the key is invalid: Compare its configured key with the current key in Live Control Room. If the key was rotated, replace the saved one in the encoder.
- Windows restarts at an unwanted time: Check Active hours and whether a restart is already pending. Schedule the restart explicitly; a temporary pause is only a short-term deferral.
- A backup encoder does not take over: Confirm the backup is configured independently, then test it by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network connection and watching for player rollover. Do not assume failover works until you have observed it.
- The stream is live but no archive appears: A 24/7 broadcast is outside YouTube’s stated automatic-archive condition for streams under 12 hours. Check the recording options available for your broadcast.
