To keep a 24/7 kirtan stream online from an Indian cloud VPS, run a source player or live-audio encoder that sends cleared audio to an Icecast mountpoint, then keep that source and the Icecast service monitored and recoverable. A VPS alone does not guarantee continuous programming: configure source reconnection, a same-format fallback, and restart monitoring, and test what listeners hear when the main source fails. Before streaming, confirm permission for the specific compositions, recordings, and performances—including continuous use, territory, and monetization.
Check rights before putting kirtan online
Permission to use a devotional composition does not automatically grant permission to stream a particular commercial or third-party recording. Confirm the rights for the actual music and recording, and for any live performance, with the relevant rights holders. Ask specifically about continuous streaming, the territories you intend to reach, and monetization.

India’s Copyright Act defines “broadcast” to include communication to the public by wire or wireless diffusion, and defines communication to the public broadly. The Copyright Rules describe notice and royalty procedures for broadcasting organizations using the statutory licensing route for published literary or musical works and sound recordings. Those provisions do not, by themselves, establish that every internet radio stream qualifies for that route. Consult a qualified Indian copyright professional before relying on statutory licensing. StreamNeo’s kirtan and Gurbani setup playbook recommends confirming each participating performer’s agreement for continuous streaming and intended monetization. It also advises against rebroadcasting a Gurdwara telecast feed or extracting its audio for a loop. Treat these as responsible workflow recommendations, not legal rulings. Use accurate metadata, respectful presentation, and moderation for the channel you operate.

Choose the right source-to-listener setup
An Icecast station has two distinct parts: a source client sends encoded audio to the server, and listeners connect to the server’s mountpoint to hear it. The source client can run on the same VPS as Icecast or on another machine. A mountpoint is the stream path listeners use, such as /kirtan. See the Icecast basic setup and configuration reference.
Prerecorded playlist
For a playlist, run a player or source process that reads only recordings cleared for this use and feeds the configured Icecast mountpoint. The VPS does not need an audio interface for a prerecorded playlist; it needs access to the files and a working playback-to-source chain.
Rank #2
Live microphone or instrument
For live kirtan, capture and encode the performance before sending it to Icecast. A local computer with suitable capture hardware may be part of that chain. A USB audio interface is relevant only if you need to connect microphones or instruments; the right inputs and connectors depend on the performers and equipment. NIC lists OBS among encoder examples in its webcast services description, but OBS, HLS, and a video-oriented webcast stack are not requirements for every audio radio stream. NIC Webcast Services

- Install Icecast and a source client. Choose software compatible with your operating system and audio workflow. The source client supplies the encoded audio; Icecast serves it to listeners.
- Configure the listening socket and port, source credentials, and mountpoint. Set listener limits in line with the VPS capacity and the audience you plan to serve. Follow the Icecast configuration reference for the configuration options available in your installation.
- Protect credentials. Keep source and administrator passwords private. Do not place them in a public stream URL, screenshot, or channel description.
- Start the source and check Icecast statistics. Confirm that Icecast reports a connected source and that the expected mountpoint is active; the basic setup guide describes checking server statistics.
- Test as a listener from another network or device. Open the public mountpoint in a compatible player and confirm that audio starts and continues. A test from the VPS itself does not verify the path listeners use.
Make the stream recover instead of merely staying powered on
Use a process supervisor or equivalent service manager to restart Icecast and the source process if either exits. Configure the source client to reconnect after a dropped connection, and monitor source status, listener statistics, and logs. Test a restart and a simulated source failure rather than assuming that recovery works.
Rank #3
Configure a fallback
Set an Icecast fallback mount or fallback file in the same stream format as the primary source. Icecast can move listeners to a fallback mount when the source stops; if the fallback is unavailable, listeners may be disconnected. Verify the fallback by deliberately stopping the main source and listening from a separate device. Icecast configuration reference
Check the full recovery path
- Confirm that the source restarts or reconnects after its process is stopped.
- Confirm that listeners hear the fallback while the primary source is unavailable.
- Confirm that the main playlist or live feed resumes after recovery.
- Check logs and alerts after each test so a silent failure is not mistaken for a healthy stream.
Choose an Indian VPS for audience load, not just location
An India-region VPS may suit an audience concentrated in India, but the title does not establish where all listeners are located. Listeners elsewhere may experience different latency. Test from the regions that matter to your audience; do not infer stream quality or uptime from a provider’s location label alone.
Rank #4
Estimate outbound traffic using the encoded bitrate multiplied by the number of concurrent listeners, then allow for protocol overhead and operating headroom. This is a planning relationship, not a measured audience or a guaranteed capacity figure. Before buying, compare the provider’s current terms for:
- India location and the geography of your intended listeners;
- sustained outbound throughput, transfer or egress limits, and overage charges;
- network-use policies and support response;
- instance monitoring, restart controls, and backup or snapshot options;
- tested stream quality at the concurrent listener load you expect.
Provider plans, prices, and sustained capacity vary and should be checked on each provider’s current pages before purchase. No particular VPS size or price follows from the information above.

Troubleshoot common interruptions
| What you notice | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Icecast has no connected source | The source process, mountpoint, credentials, or network connection | Check source and Icecast logs, confirm the configured mountpoint and credentials match, and verify that the source process is running. Keep credentials private while checking configuration. |
| The mountpoint is active but listeners cannot hear it | Public listener path, port access, or the source’s audio output | Test from a separate network or device, verify the public mountpoint and listening port, and confirm the source is sending playable audio. |
| Listeners drop when the main source stops | Fallback configuration or fallback availability | Confirm the fallback mount or file is configured and in the matching stream format, then test it by stopping the primary source. Icecast notes that listeners may be disconnected if the fallback is unavailable. |
| The stream fails to return after a restart | Service startup order or source reconnection behavior | Check whether Icecast and the source are configured to restart, inspect logs, and test the sequence again. Ensure the source reconnects after Icecast is available. |
| Playback quality degrades as the audience grows | Outbound throughput, transfer limits, or provider network conditions | Compare actual concurrent listener load and encoded bitrate with the provider’s sustained outbound capacity and egress terms. Test from listener locations rather than assuming capacity from the VPS plan name. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube kirtan stream rather than an Icecast radio mountpoint, StreamNeo is a separate, YouTube-only option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the file as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo or start the free first day.
