To recover a 24/7 fireplace stream after OBS crashes, you need two separate safeguards: a supervisor that relaunches the OBS process, and YouTube broadcast settings that let the restarted encoder reconnect to the intended live event. OBS’s automatic reconnect can help when OBS is still open but loses its connection; it does not restart OBS after the application closes. Test the complete recovery chain before leaving it unattended.
Understand what failed before choosing a fix
A stream that disappears can have several causes. The right recovery depends on whether OBS closed, stayed open but lost its connection, or could not encode the scene fast enough. A computer or network power interruption is a separate case.

| What you observe | Likely recovery path |
|---|---|
| OBS closed or crashed | Use an operating-system supervisor to relaunch the process. |
| OBS is open, but the stream disconnected or frames are dropping | Use OBS automatic reconnect and investigate the connection and bitrate. |
| OBS is open, but rendering or encoding is overloaded | Reduce scene or output demands and check the selected encoder. |
| The broadcast ended or cannot be resumed after OBS returns | Check YouTube’s stream key and broadcast lifecycle settings; the encoder restart alone may not restore the viewer-facing event. |
| Power was lost | Restore power and configure the machine to start OBS again. A UPS may bridge some brief outages, depending on its load and battery capacity, but it does not fix software crashes or network failures. |
OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain, not necessarily an OBS crash. Its troubleshooting guidance says: “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.
Set up OBS to launch and start streaming after a crash
On Windows, Task Scheduler can start OBS at boot and be configured to restart a task after failure. OBS also documents the --startstreaming launch parameter for automatically starting a stream. These settings address process recovery; they do not guarantee YouTube will still have the correct broadcast ready to receive the stream.

- Confirm the OBS setup you want to recover. Open the intended profile and scene collection, verify the fireplace video and audio sources, and confirm the YouTube destination and stream key. Keep the key private. Do not assume a restarted OBS instance will load the intended setup unless you have checked it.
- Identify the OBS program folder. OBS’s launch guide says that when OBS is launched through scheduled tasks or similar automation, set the working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe. Follow the guide for the appropriate launch configuration: OBS launch parameters. - Create a startup task in Windows Task Scheduler. Set a startup trigger and an action that launches OBS with the intended arguments, including
--startstreamingif you want it to begin streaming automatically. Set the task’s working directory to the folder containingobs64.exe. Exact options can vary with Windows and OBS installations; test the task under the same account and session conditions in which it will run. - Configure restart after task failure. In the task’s settings, enable the available restart-on-failure behavior and choose a delay and retry limit appropriate for your setup. Microsoft documents the scheduled-task RestartOnFailure setting. Avoid an unlimited rapid loop: repeated crashes can simply repeat, and a poorly configured task can create multiple OBS instances.
- Use OBS automatic reconnect as a separate safeguard. In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and review the Network automatic-reconnect controls available in your version. These can help if OBS remains running while its streaming connection drops; they do not relaunch the application after a crash. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Test the actual failure and recovery path. With a planned test broadcast, stop or close OBS, let the supervisor relaunch it, and confirm that it starts the correct scene and stream. Then check the YouTube event from a viewer’s perspective. A successful OBS launch is not proof that viewers can see a restored stream.
On Linux, systemd can supervise a service with a restart policy such as Restart=on-failure. OBS may also depend on a graphical session, display, audio devices, permissions, and the logged-in user environment. A generic headless service configuration is not enough: validate those dependencies on the actual host. See the systemd.service manual.
Keep the YouTube broadcast ready to reconnect
OBS recovery and YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle are separate. A relaunch can fail to restore the intended event if the wrong stream key is loaded, the broadcast has ended, or YouTube requires a manual Go Live action. YouTube documents how to manage stream keys and reuse stream settings in Manage live stream settings.

An OBS Project guide describes scheduled broadcasts and says disabling auto-stop can allow reconnection after a brief disconnection, while also warning that a broadcast may eventually end if it receives no stream data for multiple hours. That detailed guidance was last updated in 2021, so verify the current controls and behavior in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room rather than relying on old labels or assuming a particular reconnect window: How to stream to YouTube with OBS Studio.

For an unattended fireplace stream, run a planned outage test: stop OBS, observe what happens to the YouTube event, relaunch OBS through the configured supervisor, and confirm that the event is again visible to viewers. This checks the whole chain—process, scene, stream key, connection, and broadcast state—instead of only checking whether OBS reopened.

Diagnose connection and performance problems separately
If OBS stays open but disconnects or drops frames
Check whether the network route is stable and whether your configured bitrate is sustainable. Investigate VPN or firewall interference and the connection to the ingest service. OBS describes dynamic bitrate as a possible mitigation when the connection cannot keep up, not a fix for the underlying network problem. See OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps. OBS’s Help Portal explains: “OBS opts to drop the frames to avoid buffering and keep your stream playing.” OBS Help Portal.
If encoding or rendering is overloaded
Workload depends on the encoder, output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; meeting OBS’s baseline system requirements does not guarantee that a particular stream will run reliably. Try simplifying scenes or reducing output demands, then validate the selected encoder. Supported hardware encoding can move encoding work away from the CPU, but it is a performance option, not a guarantee against crashes. See OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting and OBS Hardware Encoding.

If OBS keeps crashing after restart
Inspect OBS logs or crash reports and the operating system’s task history. Check whether the same scene, source, encoder, or startup action is involved each time. Set a restart delay or limit where available and arrange a human alert for repeated failures; otherwise a supervisor can repeatedly relaunch a process that is still failing for the same reason.

Before running a recording around the clock, make sure you have the rights needed to use the video and any music or other audio in it on YouTube. Do not assume that a long loop, a self-made recording, or permission to use one component automatically resolves rights for every component. Review YouTube’s current rules and the permissions attached to your specific material; the OBS setup instructions do not determine whether a video is permitted or eligible for monetization. Choose a recovery approach for your setup
These approaches solve different parts of the failure chain; none is a universal guarantee of uninterrupted viewing.
| Approach | What it can recover | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| OBS automatic reconnect | A lost connection while OBS remains open | Does not relaunch a crashed OBS process. |
| Windows Task Scheduler plus OBS launch parameter | OBS startup at boot or after a configured task failure | Requires a correct working directory and a tested OBS launch and YouTube event. |
| systemd supervision | Process failure on a suitably configured Linux host | Requires the correct user session, display, devices, permissions, and OBS environment. |
| YouTube broadcast settings | Some broadcast lifecycle and reconnection cases | Behavior depends on current event settings and platform state; a broadcast can end before OBS returns. |
| UPS | Some brief power interruptions, depending on load and battery capacity | Does not recover application crashes, network failures, or service-provider outages. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded fireplace video that should keep looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to maintaining an OBS computer at home. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera or send to platforms other than YouTube.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs from the cloud, not your computer or home connection.
- Each slot streams your uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account.
- Monthly: $9.99 per month.
