How to Keep a 24/7 FFmpeg YouTube Stream Within YouTube’s Bitrate Recommendations

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose your codec, resolution and frame rate first, then set FFmpeg to YouTube’s recommended bitrate for that exact mode. For H.264, YouTube’s published recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; these are recommended settings, not one universal hard bitrate cap. Leave 20% upload headroom above the combined bitrate of primary and backup streams, use CBR behavior and a two-second keyframe interval, and monitor the stream while it runs.

Choose the bitrate for your output mode

YouTube’s encoder guidance varies by codec, resolution and frame rate. The values below are YouTube’s published minimum and recommended bitrates, not a universal platform maximum. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the exact output mode you plan to use.

Ingest codec and mode Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
H.264, 720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
H.264, 720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
H.264, 1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
H.264, 1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
AV1 or H.265, 1080p30 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
AV1 or H.265, 1080p60 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

For a long-running stream, a stable output mode is often more useful than choosing the highest resolution your encoder can produce. If your sustained upload cannot support the recommended bitrate with headroom, lower the resolution or frame rate rather than running continually at the edge of your connection.

Set the FFmpeg output to match YouTube’s guidance

Use CBR behavior and a two-second keyframe interval

YouTube lists RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, CBR, and keyframes every two seconds; the keyframe interval must not exceed four seconds. Its advanced settings also specify square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames and one reference frame. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. RTMPS is recommended. Confirm the requirements for your chosen codec and mode in YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

FFmpeg exposes bitrate, maximum-rate and buffer-size controls, but those encoder options alone do not guarantee compliant CBR output. The exact parameters depend on the encoder and source. The following is a starting pattern for an H.264/x264 input file, not a tested or guaranteed command. Replace the input and stream-key placeholders, and validate the actual output before relying on it continuously:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 14M -minrate 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -x264-params "nal-hrd=cbr"
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "rtmps://STREAM_URL/STREAM_KEY"

This example assumes 1080p30 video at YouTube’s 14 Mbps H.264 recommendation and a 30 fps source/output, making 60 frames a two-second GOP. Adapt both the target bitrate and GOP length to your actual output mode: for example, 60 fps requires 120 frames for a two-second interval. Confirm the RTMPS server URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room; treat the key like a password and do not publish it in scripts, logs or screenshots.

To loop an input indefinitely, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 repeats that input. Check that the video and audio loop cleanly; otherwise viewers may hear or see a jarring reset. Use a representative clip with motion and audio when testing, since a static image or silent test may not reveal the behavior of the real program.

Check upload capacity, including backup streams

YouTube recommends upload capacity 20% above the total bitrate of the primary and backup streams combined. For a primary stream at 14 Mbps with no backup, that means at least 16.8 Mbps of available sustained upload capacity under this recommendation. If both primary and backup are sent, add their bitrates first and then allow the headroom. This is capacity for the streams, not a guarantee that a shared connection will consistently deliver it.

Other devices and services on the same connection can consume upload bandwidth. YouTube warns that connectivity disruptions can break a stream and advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Prepare a 24/7 stream for interruptions and archives

Test the actual stream and watch its health

  1. Choose the output mode. Set the codec, resolution and frame rate to a mode in YouTube’s encoder guidance, then use its recommended bitrate as your target.
  2. Verify the encoder output. Check the stream’s bitrate behavior, frame rate, keyframe interval and audio in a representative test. FFmpeg flags are not proof that the delivered stream meets every YouTube setting.
  3. Test network headroom. Measure available sustained upload while accounting for shared network use and any backup stream. A brief speed-test peak does not establish continuous capacity.
  4. Confirm the YouTube ingest settings. In Live Control Room, verify the stream URL, key, latency and relevant DVR, auto-start or auto-stop options. YouTube describes these controls in Manage live stream settings.
  5. Monitor during operation. Watch encoder and YouTube stream health indicators for dropped frames, unstable bitrate or ingest interruptions, and have a recovery plan appropriate to your encoder host and connection.

Keep a local recording if the archive matters

YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream if it is less than 12 hours. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; that warning concerns archive capture, not a stated general maximum broadcast duration. If preserving the full program matters, record locally and plan how you will retain and verify that recording. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Troubleshoot bitrate and continuity problems

  • Stream health reports an unstable connection or dropped frames: check sustained upload capacity, shared network traffic and whether primary plus backup bitrate plus the recommended 20% headroom fits the connection. Lower the output mode if it does not.
  • The stream exceeds the intended bitrate: confirm which video encoder is active and inspect its bitrate, maximum-rate and buffer settings. Verify the output rather than assuming that FFmpeg options guarantee CBR.
  • Keyframes are too far apart: set the GOP/keyframe interval to two seconds for the configured frame rate, then confirm the produced stream; do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum interval.
  • YouTube does not show the expected stream: verify the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room, and ensure the key has not been copied incorrectly or exposed.
  • A very long broadcast is missing from archives: streams over 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use the planned local recording rather than treating the platform archive as the only copy.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded video rather than operating FFmpeg yourself, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers.

The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube only. Start at StreamNeo’s free trial signup.
