Measure the Raspberry Pi while it is running the stream, then fix the cause: keep its air paths clear, check for undervoltage as well as heat, and add a model-compatible cooler if sustained temperatures trigger throttling. Raspberry Pi documents a thermal-management limit of 85°C, with Arm-core throttling beginning progressively between 80°C and 85°C. Those figures describe the board’s protection behavior, not a target temperature or a guarantee that any particular streaming setup will stay cool.
Check temperature and throttling under the real workload
An idle reading can miss the heat produced by continuous encoding, overlays, filters, or other processing. Test with the same resolution, frame rate, encoder, case, and stream content you expect to use, and let the system run long enough to observe sustained behavior.
- Open a terminal on Raspberry Pi OS.
- Run
vcgencmd measure_tempto read the SoC temperature. - Run
vcgencmd get_throttledto inspect current and historical throttling and undervoltage flags. - Record readings during a representative stream, not just at startup. Check again if stream processing slows or the board behaves differently as it warms.
Raspberry Pi’s configuration documentation also describes a sysfs thermal-zone temperature reading in millidegrees Celsius. Use the documented vcgencmd checks first if you want a straightforward way to see the SoC temperature and throttle status. Raspberry Pi temperature-monitoring and configuration documentation.
How hot is too hot?
Raspberry Pi Ltd documents 85°C as the thermal-management limit for the SoCs covered by its hardware documentation. The Arm cores are progressively throttled from 80°C to 85°C; at 85°C, both the Arm and GPU are throttled to manage heat. Throttling protects the chip, but reduced clock speeds can affect performance. These are thermal-management thresholds, not evidence that every board will shut down at 85°C or a recommended operating target for every stream. Raspberry Pi hardware documentation.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Raspberry Pi Ltd states, “Thanks to built-in throttling, heatsinks are not necessary to prevent overheating damage to the SoC.” That does not mean cooling is irrelevant: under sustained work, better cooling may help avoid throttling and preserve performance. Raspberry Pi’s cooling paper identifies high ambient temperatures, persistent high workloads, airtight enclosures, and overclocking as conditions where additional cooling may be useful. Raspberry Pi’s cooling guidance.
Rule out power and airflow problems first
Check for undervoltage
A throttle flag does not automatically mean the board is overheating. vcgencmd get_throttled also reports undervoltage status. If that appears, investigate the power supply and power connections as well as temperature; adding a fan will not correct an inadequate or unstable power source. Raspberry Pi’s configuration documentation explains the relevant flags.

Open the air path
- Keep vents and the area around the board unobstructed.
- Avoid an airtight enclosure that traps warm air.
- Check whether cables, a HAT, or the mounting position block airflow or prevent a fan from fitting.
- Where practical, vertical mounting can slightly improve heat dissipation, according to Raspberry Pi’s hardware guidance.
Do not buy a cooler before identifying the board model and checking the case. A heatsink or small fan may reduce throttling, and airflow over a heatsink improves cooling efficiency, but compatibility and the actual workload matter.
Choose cooling that fits your Raspberry Pi
There is no single cooler recommendation for every generation or enclosure. Match the accessory to the exact board, then compare temperature and throttle status during the same stream conditions. Also consider ambient temperature, noise, mounting, power connection, and clearance for HATs and cables.

| Cooling path | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Improve existing airflow | Any model whose vents or heatsink are obstructed or whose enclosure traps heat | Clear the air path and retest under the stream workload before buying parts. |
| Heatsink or compatible small fan | Boards and cases that support the specific part | Confirm model and case compatibility, physical fit, airflow over the heatsink, and whether power or HAT access is affected. |

For Raspberry Pi 5, the documented default fan thresholds are 50°C, 60°C, 67.5°C, and 75°C for low, medium, high, and full fan speed. These are configurable fan-control thresholds, not universal temperature targets. Fan control has 5°C hysteresis on the way down, so the fan does not simply change speed at the same threshold in both directions. Raspberry Pi fan-control documentation.
Include YouTube encoding work in the thermal test
The work a Pi must do depends on the stream’s encoding path, resolution, frame rate, and any filters or overlays. Raspberry Pi’s published H.264 comparison discusses Pi 5 software-encoding profiles and a Pi 4 hardware-encoding path; it is not a temperature benchmark for every camera, software stack, filter, or continuous deployment. Test your own configuration instead of assuming a given profile will run cool. Raspberry Pi H.264 encoding paper.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval. Its ingestion bitrate table recommends 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p30, and 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30. Those are YouTube ingest recommendations, not promises that a Raspberry Pi can encode at those settings without throttling. YouTube advises testing with similar movement and audio and monitoring stream health. YouTube live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

| Symptom or check | Likely issue to investigate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature rises during a long stream and throttling is reported | Sustained processing load, high ambient temperature, restricted airflow, or overclocking | Clear airflow, avoid an airtight case, and retest. If it persists, use cooling compatible with the exact model and case. |
Undervoltage appears in get_throttled |
Power delivery rather than temperature alone | Check the supply and connections; do not treat a fan as the only fix. |
| Performance drops, but the temperature reading does not explain it | Encoding load, power, software configuration, or another system bottleneck | Recheck throttle flags and test the actual resolution, frame rate, filters, and encode path. A network interruption is separate from thermal throttling. |
| New cooler does not resolve the problem | Incompatible fit, obstructed airflow, power issue, or a workload beyond the setup’s steady-state capacity | Confirm the cooler is meant for the board, inspect airflow and power, then repeat the same sustained test and compare temperature and flags. |
| YouTube stream health is poor while Pi temperature is stable | Ingest bitrate, network, or encoder settings rather than overheating | Check YouTube’s stream health and encoder settings independently; its bitrate figures are ingest guidance, not Pi performance guarantees. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If keeping a Raspberry Pi cool is only one part of the problem and the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live from uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. There is one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
