Normalize each video separately with FFmpeg’s loudnorm filter, using the same chosen loudness, loudness-range, and true-peak targets for every file. For a repeatable offline workflow, measure each file first, then use that file’s measurements in its own processing pass. This can make transitions between playlist entries more consistent, but it does not guarantee identical playback for every YouTube viewer.
Why normalize each playlist video separately?
A playlist is a sequence of separate programs, not one continuous audio file. If you measure unrelated videos as one combined program, a loud or quiet section in one entry can skew the measurement for the others. Instead, analyze and process each video independently while keeping your chosen targets consistent.
FFmpeg describes loudnorm as EBU R128 loudness normalization, with dynamic and linear modes and support for single-pass operation on files and livestreams, as well as double-pass operation on files. See the FFmpeg Filters Documentation.
Choose targets for your material
loudnorm uses three related targets:
- Integrated loudness (
I, LUFS): a measure of overall perceived program loudness. - Loudness range (
LRA, LU): a measure of how much loudness varies over the program. - Maximum true peak (
TP, dBTP): a ceiling that accounts for peaks, including inter-sample peaks.
Choose the three together. Integrated loudness is not a substitute for controlling peaks or deciding how much dynamic variation to preserve. FFmpeg’s documented defaults are I=-24.0, LRA=7.0, and TP=-2.0; its documented parameter ranges are -70 to -5 LUFS for I, 1 to 50 LU for LRA, and -9 to 0 dBTP for TP. Those are filter defaults and parameter limits, not a YouTube creator upload specification.

The commands below use I=-16, LRA=11, and TP=-1.5 only as illustrative project choices. They are not official YouTube requirements. Speech, music, and mixed programming may call for different editorial choices; matching measurements alone cannot decide whether the dynamics sound right.
Use a two-pass workflow for offline videos
Two-pass processing uses measurements from the actual input file. Run both passes for every playlist entry, retaining that file’s own reported values. Do not reuse one video’s measurements for another.

1. Analyze one input file
For each input, run an analysis pass with the targets you selected. This example prints machine-readable results and sends output to FFmpeg’s null muxer rather than creating a media file:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -af "loudnorm=I=-16:LRA=11:TP=-1.5:print_format=json" -f null -
Record the reported input_i, input_lra, input_tp, input_thresh, and target_offset values for that input. Preserve the values as reported; the second pass needs measurements for the same file.

2. Process that file with its measurements
Substitute the exact first-pass values for the example measurement fields below. The optional video mapping copies the video stream, while -map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream for filtering. Filtered audio must be encoded; this example uses AAC. Check the actual file’s streams and container compatibility before adopting a command for a batch.
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0:v? -map 0:a:0 -af "loudnorm=I=-16:LRA=11:TP=-1.5:measured_I=INPUT_I:measured_LRA=INPUT_LRA:measured_TP=INPUT_TP:measured_thresh=INPUT_THRESH:offset=TARGET_OFFSET:linear=true:print_format=summary" -c:v copy -c:a aac output.mp4
Replace INPUT_I, INPUT_LRA, INPUT_TP, INPUT_THRESH, and TARGET_OFFSET with the corresponding values from that file’s analysis. The uppercase labels are explanatory fields, not literal values to pass to FFmpeg. If your source has multiple audio streams, choose the intended one rather than assuming the first is right. Add or adjust mappings for subtitles, data, and other streams only after checking the source and desired output container; copying every stream blindly is not reliable for every file.

3. Repeat for every playlist entry
Run analysis and processing independently for each video, using the same chosen targets but that file’s own measurements. Keep the output files distinct, then upload the processed versions to YouTube and arrange them in the intended playlist order.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to use linear or dynamic mode
The second-pass example requests linear normalization with linear=true. Linear mode uses constant gain, which preserves the source’s internal dynamics when the constraints can be met. It requires measured inputs. FFmpeg can fall back to dynamic mode if the target LRA is below the source LRA or if the necessary gain would exceed the true-peak ceiling. Check the reported normalization type in the summary instead of assuming that a request for linear mode guarantees it was used.

Dynamic normalization can reshape level over time when a simple gain change cannot satisfy the selected targets. It is not merely a fixed volume increase; listen carefully to quiet passages and intentionally dynamic material. FFmpeg documents that dynamic-mode true-peak detection upsamples to 192 kHz.
Single-pass mode is available for files and livestreams and is simpler when you do not have or need an analysis pass. For a batch of offline playlist videos where file-specific measurements and repeatable targets matter, two-pass processing gives you those measurements. The choice between modes should account for workflow time, preservation of dynamics, peak headroom, and whether dynamic processing or a fallback is acceptable.
Check the output before uploading
- Measure each rendered file with FFmpeg’s EBU R128 measurement capability or inspect the
loudnormsummary. Confirm the output integrated loudness and true peak against the tolerances you chose for the project. - Listen to the loudest and quietest sections of each video, not just its opening. Check transitions between consecutive playlist entries at a sensible monitoring level.
- Confirm that the intended audio stream and channel layout were used. A technically valid output can still contain the wrong track or an unintended channel arrangement.
- Audition the result for pumping, unexpectedly raised background noise, or lost contrast between quiet and loud sections. Adjust the project targets or processing choice if the sound is not appropriate.
What YouTube playback can change
The rendered file and a viewer’s playback are separate stages. YouTube’s Help page says Stable volume is on by default for viewers, balances the range between quiet and loud, is unavailable for some videos, and is turned off for YouTube Music and official music videos. Viewers can toggle it in the player. YouTube also describes audio-level and mixing enhancements, including Stable volume, Voice boost, and channel controls for future uploads; these settings do not affect ads or videos already uploaded. See Control video volume on your device – Computer and Video & audio quality enhancements.
Because viewer-side enhancements and playback settings can intervene, file normalization cannot promise identical sound for every viewer. The cited YouTube Help pages describe playback features and controls, not a fixed creator-side LUFS upload target; do not treat a particular I value as a YouTube requirement or as a way to disable Stable volume.
Keep the playlist live without leaving a computer on
Normalizing audio is an offline preparation task; it does not keep a YouTube live stream running. If your goal is to play uploaded, prepared videos as a continuous YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for that job: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded video to YouTube; it is not a camera-live service.
