Before enrolling, back up important files and know how you would recover the PC: preview software is unfinished, and returning to an earlier version is time-limited.
Before you join the Beta Channel
Windows Insider builds let you try work in progress and send feedback through Feedback Hub. They are evaluation software, not a substitute for the more stable production release: Microsoft says Insider builds are less stable, are not serviced in the same way, and eventually expire. Do not install a preview on a PC you cannot afford to troubleshoot.

Back up files and verify the copy
Make a separate copy of important files and check that you can open the backed-up data. Microsoft warns that some recovery options can cause data loss. An external USB backup drive is one possible destination, but no particular product is required for enrollment.

Plan for recovery
Review Windows recovery options before changing builds, and keep relevant installation or manufacturer recovery information available. Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) provides troubleshooting and recovery tools. On an encrypted device, some Windows RE tools may require the BitLocker recovery key, so make sure you can access it.

Check the PC, without treating minimums as a preview guarantee
Microsoft’s general Windows 11 system requirements include a compatible 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of storage. These are minimums for Windows 11 generally; they do not guarantee that a particular preview build will run well.
How to join the Windows Insider Beta Channel
- Register and prepare your account. Join the Windows Insider Program and use the account registered with the program. Microsoft’s Windows Insider enrollment instructions describe linking that account during setup.
- Open the Insider settings. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program, then select Get Started.
- Link the registered account. Follow the prompts to connect the Microsoft account registered with the Windows Insider Program.
- Select Beta. Choose the Beta Channel when asked which channel to join, then review and accept the device agreements.
- Restart. Choose to restart now or later. After the restart, Windows begins receiving builds for the selected channel.
Settings wording can vary by Windows version. The route above is for Windows 11; older Windows releases may show different labels or navigation.

How to install Windows preview builds
After joining and restarting, check Settings > Windows Update. Select Check for updates, then download and install an Insider build if Windows offers one. Follow the on-screen prompts, including any restart request, and allow the installation to finish before shutting down the PC.
The channel selection controls which Insider builds are offered. The enrollment guidance does not guarantee that a particular feature or build will arrive on a particular date, so treat Windows Update as the source of what is currently available to your device.

Can you go back after installing a preview build?
Windows provides a Go back option for a limited period after an upgrade—usually 10 days, according to Microsoft’s rollback guidance. The required rollback files must still be present. Going back can preserve personal files, but it removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes made since then.
Rolling back does not remove the PC from the Insider Program. The device may be offered another preview build, so rollback and opting out are separate actions.

How to stop getting Windows Insider builds
Microsoft’s opt-out instructions apply when the PC is on a production build. First check the installed build under Settings > System > About, or run winver. Then open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program, select Stop getting preview builds, and follow the instructions shown.
If your goal is to restore the original operating system rather than simply stop future preview builds, Microsoft advises backing up the information you want to keep and using the appropriate recovery image. That is a separate recovery process, not the same as the time-limited Go back option.
Quick Recap
What to do if recovery is needed
- Use the Windows recovery options appropriate to the problem, and consult the device maker’s recovery instructions where relevant.
- Keep the BitLocker recovery key accessible; some Windows RE tools can request it on encrypted PCs.
- Assume a recovery operation may affect data, apps, drivers, or settings. Make sure the backup is usable before proceeding when possible.
