What you need before joining
The player version of SCP: Secret Laboratory is distributed through Steam as App ID 700330. Its dedicated-server software is a separate Steam application, App ID 996560; you do not need to install the dedicated-server application merely to join someone else’s server.

- The server’s listing in the in-game browser, or a connection endpoint supplied by the operator.
- For direct connection, the server IP address and, when provided by the operator, its port.
- An understanding that each server is community-operated and may have its own rules, plugins, whitelist and moderation policy.
Servers are maintained by third parties, so two communities can offer very different experiences even when they run the same game. Read the server description and any linked rules before connecting.
Join through the in-game Server Browser
1. Launch the game from Steam
Start SCP: Secret Laboratory from your Steam library. The normal route to public servers begins inside the game rather than in a web browser or a separate launcher.

2. Open Server Browser
From the game’s main interface, open Server Browser. Northwood’s technical documentation describes this screen as the place to browse verified servers and use Direct Connect when you already know an address.
3. Narrow the list with filters
Use the browser’s filters before choosing a listing. You can hide empty servers, hide full servers, and hide whitelisted servers when you do not have permission to enter them. Filtering first is faster than repeatedly opening servers that cannot accept you.
4. Inspect a server’s information
Select a listing and read the information shown by the browser. Check the stated region or expected ping, current population, whitelist status, whether the server is official or community-run, available plugins, and the rules supplied by the operator. A low population may mean a quieter match, while a full listing may require waiting or choosing another server.
5. Join only after checking the rules
Community rules and moderation differ from one server to another. Plugins can change gameplay, and a whitelist can restrict entry even when the server appears in the public list. If the listing links to a rules page, read it before joining so you know what behavior and access requirements apply.

Use the browser’s discovery tabs
The browser separates servers into tabs that help with different situations:
| Tab | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Official | To view the official-server listings exposed by the game. |
| Favorites | To return to servers you have saved for regular play. |
| History | To find servers you joined previously without searching the full list again. |
| Friends | To see servers on which your Steam friends are currently playing, when the game exposes that activity. |
The official 10.0.0 notes also describe Refresh and Rejoin functions. Use Refresh when the list looks out of date; use Rejoin when you want to return to the server you were most recently connected to.

Direct-connect to a known server IP
When Direct Connect is the better route
Direct Connect is useful when an operator gives you an address but the server does not appear in the browser, when a friend is hosting a private server, or when you want to bypass a long public list. It also provides a practical fallback if search results are stale.
Enter the endpoint
- Launch SCP: Secret Laboratory through Steam.
- Open Server Browser from the main interface.
- Choose Direct Connect.
- Enter the server’s IP address exactly as supplied by the operator.
- If the operator supplied a port, include it in the endpoint using the format they provided.
- Submit the connection and wait for the game to respond.
Do not guess a port. If an operator gives only an IP address, try that address first; if the connection requires a specific port, ask the operator for the complete endpoint.

Connect with Steam’s Game Servers window
Steam provides a second route for a known IP and port. This is separate from the in-game browser and can be useful when a server is difficult to locate there.
- Open the Steam client.
- Select View in the top menu.
- Choose Game Servers.
- Open the Favorites tab.
- Add the server’s IP address and port supplied by the operator.
- Select the saved endpoint and click Connect.
This route requires a usable IP-and-port combination. If you have only a community name or a server description, return to the in-game browser or ask the operator for the endpoint.

How to join a friend’s server
If the server appears in Friends
Open the browser’s Friends tab and look for the server on which your friend is playing. The tab is intended to surface those servers without requiring you to know their address. You still need to read the server information and follow its rules; being associated with a friend does not override a whitelist or community policy.
If the server does not appear
Ask your friend or the server operator for the server’s IP address and port. Use Server Browser > Direct Connect, or add the endpoint through Steam > View > Game Servers > Favorites. A hosted private server normally provides this connection information to invited players.

Choosing between servers
The browser gives you several practical comparison points. Use them together rather than choosing by population alone.

Troubleshoot common joining problems
You know the endpoint, but cannot find the server
Do not rely on the public list alone. Open Direct Connect and enter the supplied IP, including the supplied port when applicable. If that does not work, add the same IP-and-port combination under Steam > View > Game Servers > Favorites and select Connect.
The server is full
Use the browser’s full-server filter to hide listings that cannot accept another player, or choose a different server. If the server is important to you, wait for an available slot and refresh the listing before trying again.
The server is whitelisted
Use the filter to hide whitelisted servers when you are looking for open communities. If you specifically want to join that server, contact its community and request the required permission. A direct IP does not by itself bypass a whitelist.
Your friend’s server is missing
Check the Friends tab first, then ask your friend for the complete IP and port. Use Direct Connect or Steam’s Favorites list. The Friends tab can surface servers where friends are playing, but it is not a substitute for an endpoint when the server is private or not currently exposed there.

Use the browser’s Refresh function and check the server again. If you previously joined it, try Rejoin or locate it in History. For a known endpoint, Direct Connect remains the more direct test.
You are unsure whether a listing is trustworthy for your play style
Read the server description, linked rules and plugin information before entering. Because third parties operate these servers, moderation standards and gameplay changes are not uniform. Choose another listing if its policies, whitelist or modifications do not suit you.
Verified servers and third-party operation
Northwood’s verified-server guidelines describe a publicly available verified list that can be accessed in-game and through the game’s server-listing service. Verification helps with discovery, but it does not make every server identical. Operators still control their own communities, plugins, rules and moderation within the applicable guidelines.
When comparing an official listing with a community listing, treat the label as one decision factor rather than a guarantee of a particular ruleset or play style. The information displayed for the individual server remains the relevant source for its current requirements.

Quick decision guide
- You want a public match: Open Server Browser, use the filters, inspect the listing and join.
- You want an official listing: Check the Official tab, then review the individual server information.
- You return to the same community: Save it in Favorites and use History or Rejoin when appropriate.
- A friend is already playing: Check Friends; if it is absent, request the IP and port.
- You were given an IP: Use Direct Connect and include the supplied port.
- The browser cannot locate a known server: Add the IP and port under Steam’s Game Servers > Favorites and connect from there.
- You see a whitelist or full-server warning: Filter those listings, wait for an opening, or obtain permission from that community.
