To join a Windows 11 PC to an on-premises Active Directory domain, open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school > Connect, choose Join this device to a local Active Directory domain, and follow the prompts. First confirm with your organization’s IT team that this is the required setup—not a Microsoft Entra ID join—and get the correct domain name and authorized credentials.
Check these requirements before you begin
- Confirm the directory type. An on-premises Active Directory domain join and a Microsoft Entra ID join are separate processes. Ask IT which one your organization uses; the “local Active Directory domain” option is for the on-premises path. Microsoft describes distinct Windows enrollment paths for these directory setups in its MDM enrollment guidance.
- Check your Windows edition. Microsoft lists Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, and specified Pro variants as eligible client editions for domain joining. Check the edition under Settings > System > About. An eligible edition does not provide network access, credentials, or permission to join. See Microsoft’s domain-join instructions for the edition details.
- Get the right access. You need local administrator rights on the PC and an identity authorized to create or reuse the computer account in Active Directory. The required domain permissions can differ if IT has already created the computer account. Ask the administrator to authorize or prepare it; Microsoft explains the relevant join scenarios in its computer-domain join guidance.
- Connect to the organization’s network. The PC must be able to reach domain services, and its DNS configuration must resolve the domain and domain controllers. If you are working remotely, ask IT whether you need to connect to a particular VPN or network first.
- Have the exact domain name. Use the DNS domain name supplied by IT. Do not guess it from an email address or use credentials you have not been authorized to enter.
Join the domain in Windows 11 Settings
- Connect the PC to the organization’s network or to the VPN specified by IT.
- Open Start > Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
- Select Connect. In the join options, select Join this device to a local Active Directory domain.
- Enter the domain name provided by IT, then select Next.
- When prompted, enter the authorized domain account credentials. Accept the confirmation if Windows displays one.
- Restart the PC when prompted to complete the join.
After restart, sign in with the domain account if IT has instructed you to do so. The available sign-in options, accounts, and policies depend on how your organization configured the device. If the PC does not appear to be joined or expected access is missing, ask IT to verify its membership and configuration.

What the two join paths mean
| Path | What it connects to | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Local Active Directory domain join | An organization’s on-premises Active Directory domain. | Use the Settings option described above when IT confirms this is the required setup. |
| Microsoft Entra ID join | An organization’s cloud identity directory. | Follow your organization’s Entra ID instructions instead. Do not treat this as an alternate button for joining the same on-premises domain. |
Administrator options for managed devices
IT administrators can also join a device using an elevated Command Prompt with netdom join or elevated PowerShell with Add-Computer -DomainName "YourDomainName" -Credential (Get-Credential), followed by a restart. These methods are intended for authorized administrator or deployment workflows; the domain name and credentials must come from the organization.

Microsoft notes that prestaging can place the account in an organizational unit and prepare its permissions. Whether that is appropriate depends on the organization’s account and device-management policy.

- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- The domain is not found, or Windows never asks for credentials: Confirm the PC is on the right network or VPN. Ask IT to verify the DNS servers and search suffixes, and whether the domain and domain controllers resolve from the PC.
- Credentials or permissions are rejected: Verify the account and password with IT. Ask whether the account has permission to create a computer object or reuse the existing one under your organization’s policy. Microsoft’s authentication-error guidance explains why rights can differ between these cases.
- Windows reports that the computer account already exists: Do not delete or reset the account yourself. Ask the administrator whether it was prestaged and whether your joining identity has permission to use it.
- A network or RPC-style error appears: Check that the PC can reach domain controllers. Ask IT to investigate whether a firewall, VPN, or other network device is blocking the required traffic; the right checks depend on the organization’s network.
- The cause remains unclear: Preserve the exact error and review
