Open the meeting link in your invitation, then follow the on-screen prompts to choose a browser or app, allow camera and microphone access, check your settings, and join. You may not need an account or an app, but that depends on the service and the organizer’s settings.
What you need before you join
- The meeting invitation or link. Keep any meeting ID and passcode handy if the organizer supplied them.
- A device with internet access and working audio. A built-in camera and microphone may be enough; an external USB webcam or headset is optional if the built-in equipment is missing or unsuitable.
- A supported browser or the service’s app. Requirements differ by service and device. Google Meet lists current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari, and requires broadband and a built-in or external USB camera. Microsoft Teams lists a USB video camera and a compatible microphone and speakers or headset among its system requirements. Google Meet requirements; Microsoft Teams system requirements.
How to join a video meeting step by step
- Open the invitation. Select the meeting link in the email or calendar invite. If there is no link, use the meeting ID and passcode from the organizer if the service offers that route.
- Choose a browser or app. Follow the choices shown after opening the link. A browser can avoid installing an app for some meetings, but the option depends on the service, browser, and host settings. If there is no browser option, use the offered app or ask the organizer how to join.
- Enter a name or sign in if prompted. Some services let guests enter a display name; an organizer or organization may instead require a particular account or identity verification.
- Allow camera and microphone access. When the browser or app asks to use these devices, choose Allow if you want to be seen or heard. If you deny access, the meeting may open without working video or audio.
- Check the pre-join screen. Select the intended camera and microphone if choices are available. Decide whether to start with your camera on, then choose Join or Join now.
- Wait to be admitted if needed. If you land in a lobby or waiting room, stay there until the organizer lets you in.
Microsoft’s instructions for joining Teams without an account describe guest entry in many cases, while noting that meeting settings can require sign-in or verification. Microsoft Support: Join a meeting without an account in Microsoft Teams.

Do you need to download an app or create an account?
Not always. The link is the best starting point because it shows which joining methods are available for that particular meeting. Browser access, guest access, and account requirements vary by service and organizer policy; do not assume every invite allows joining without an app or sign-in.
- Google Meet: You can use a supported browser on a compatible device or the Meet or Gmail mobile app. Workspace administrators may need to enable Meet, and creating a work or school meeting requires signing in to the Workspace account. Google Meet requirements.
- Microsoft Teams: Many meetings offer a browser guest route, but an organizer or administrator can require an authorized account or email verification. A lobby may also require the organizer to admit you. Microsoft Support: joining Teams without an account.
- Zoom: Participants generally do not need a Zoom account, unless the host requires authentication. Browser joining is available only when the host permits it and has limited functionality; Zoom recommends its desktop app when possible for its best audio/video experience. Zoom: joining without an account; Zoom Web App.
How to turn on your camera and microphone
Before joining, look for camera and microphone controls on the pre-join screen. Choose the correct devices if more than one is listed, and switch each control on or off according to your preference. If you have already joined, use the meeting controls to unmute or enable video; exact labels and locations vary by service.

If you cannot join or your devices do not work
- No browser option: The organizer may have disabled browser entry, or the service may require its app. Use another option shown in the invitation or ask the organizer. Zoom explicitly makes web joining dependent on host settings.
- A sign-in or verification prompt appears: This may be an organizer or organization requirement, not a setup problem. Follow the prompt or ask which account is authorized.
- You are waiting in a lobby: Stay on the screen until the organizer admits you. If you have been waiting and the meeting should have started, contact the organizer.
- Camera or microphone is unavailable: Check that the intended device is selected, allow browser/app access, and re-enter the meeting. Try built-in equipment first; if it is absent or not working, a USB webcam or headset with a microphone can provide an alternative.
- Audio or video still does not work: Confirm the device is connected and that another app is not preventing the meeting service from using it. If the problem persists, ask the organizer whether you can join by another supported method.
