What you need before connecting
The correct tab and network choice depend on how the world is hosted. Ask the host for these details before launching the game:

- Session type: public dedicated server, public player-hosted game, friend-hosted world, LAN game, or private server.
- Network: Steam or EOS. Steam listings are for PC players using Steam accounts. EOS is the crossplay route for compatible PC, Xbox, and PlayStation servers.
- Server name or address: a public listing may be searchable by name; a private game may require an IP address for Direct Connect.
- Platform and edition: confirm that the server accepts your version of the game and your platform.
- Mods: ask whether the world uses mods and expect the game to download required files when you join.
- Access settings: a friend-hosted world may be visible only when the host is online and has enabled the appropriate multiplayer access.
Having this information avoids the most common mistake: looking in the wrong discovery list or selecting Steam when the session requires EOS.
Join a public dedicated server
Dedicated servers are listed separately from player-hosted games. They run independently of an individual player’s game client, making them suitable for worlds intended to stay available over longer periods.

- Launch Space Engineers and wait at the Main Screen.
- Select Join Game.
- Open the Servers tab.
- On PC, set the Steam/EOS toggle to match the server. Use Steam for a Steam-only PC listing; use EOS for a compatible crossplay listing.
- Browse or search for the server. Select its listing and open Server Details.
- Review the displayed world settings, mods, current player count, and uptime. These details help you decide whether the session matches what you want to play.
- Select the server’s join command and wait for the connection screen.
- If required files are listed, approve the mod download and let it finish before trying to enter the world.
The first mod download can take a long time. A slow initial connection does not necessarily mean the server is unavailable; allow the download to complete before cancelling.
What the Server Details panel tells you
- World settings indicate how the host configured the environment and gameplay rules.
- Mods show whether your client must retrieve additional files.
- Current players gives you a snapshot of activity, not a guarantee that the count will remain unchanged.
- Uptime helps distinguish an established persistent server from a newly started or frequently restarted session.
Join a public player-hosted game
The Games tab lists public games hosted by players. These sessions are different from dedicated servers because the host’s game session provides the connection.

- Open Games.
- Check that the geographic-region listing is the one you expect; public player-hosted games are shown for your region.
- On PC, choose the appropriate Steam or EOS network before selecting a listing.
- Select the game, inspect any visible settings, and choose the join option.
- Accept any required mod download. The first download may be considerably slower than later connections.
If the game disappears while you are browsing, the host may have ended the session or changed its access settings. Refresh the list and ask the host to confirm that the world is still online.

Join a friend’s world
Friend-hosted sessions use the Friends tab or an invitation from the host. Visibility depends on the host’s multiplayer settings and whether the game is online.
Using the Friends tab
- Open Join Game from the Main Screen.
- Select Friends.
- Choose your friend’s visible session and select the join command.
- If the session is not listed, have the host verify that the world is online and that its multiplayer access allows friends to join.
- On PC, make sure your Steam/EOS selection matches the network used by the host.
Accepting a Steam invitation
For a Steam-hosted game, the host can use the in-game Invite control. Accept the invitation through the Steam interface, then let Space Engineers open the session. If the invitation does not arrive, confirm that both players are signed in to the expected Steam accounts and that the host has actually started the world.
What the host controls
The host determines who can join through the world’s multiplayer access settings. A friend may therefore be online but unable to enter if the session is private, restricted, or offline. Ask the host to check those settings rather than repeatedly refreshing your own list.

Join a LAN game
The LAN tab is for games advertised on your local network. It is intended for devices connected to the same local network, not for a friend playing over the public Internet.
- Connect both devices to the same local network.
- Have the host start the world and enable multiplayer access.
- From the Main Screen, select Join Game, then LAN.
- Select the advertised game and choose the join command.
- Allow any required mods to download before entering the world.
If the host appears in Friends but not LAN, the sessions are being discovered through different mechanisms. Use the tab that matches the host’s setup rather than assuming one list should contain every game.
Connect with Direct Connect
Use Direct Connect when a host gives you the IP address of a private game. The official multiplayer instructions describe this route specifically for a supplied private-game address.

- Launch the game and select Join Game from the Main Screen.
- Choose Direct Connect.
- Paste or type the complete IP address supplied by the host.
- Submit the address and wait for the connection attempt.
- If prompted, allow the required mod files to download.
Do not guess an address or substitute a server name. Ask the host to resend the exact address and confirm whether the server expects Steam or EOS. A correct IP still cannot connect you to a Steam-only server from a console account.
Steam and EOS: choose the right network
On PC, the Steam/EOS toggle determines which server network you browse. The distinction is about account and platform compatibility, not a graphical setting.

Console players cannot join a Steam-only server. The host must provide an EOS-compatible, crossplay-enabled server. Conversely, selecting EOS on PC will not make a Steam-only world cross-platform; the server itself must support EOS.
Crossplay checks
- Confirm with the host that crossplay is enabled on the server, not merely that the players own different platforms.
- On PC, switch to EOS before opening the server list or using Direct Connect to an EOS session.
- If a console player cannot see the world, verify that the host is not running a Steam-only listing.
- If a PC player cannot see an EOS world, check that the PC client is browsing EOS rather than Steam.
Mods and the first connection
Space Engineers can download required server mods when you join. You normally do not need to locate each file manually; accept the download request presented by the game.

- The game may pause at a download or loading stage while it retrieves the world’s required files.
- The first mod download can take a long time, especially for a heavily modified world.
- After the files are present, subsequent joins may not require the same download.
- Joining a different server can trigger another set of downloads because each world can use its own mod collection.
If the download appears stuck
- Wait long enough for the initial download to complete; do not treat a slow first transfer as proof that the server is offline.
- Check whether the server listing still shows the same uptime and player information.
- Cancel only if the process clearly stops responding, then return to Join Game and try again.
- Ask the host whether the mod list changed or the server restarted while you were connecting.
There is no single guaranteed fix for every mod or connection error. The useful distinction is whether the failure occurs before downloading, during the download, or after the files have loaded; give the host that exact stage when requesting help.

Dedicated servers allow players to connect to a third-party host instead of relying on a player-hosted peer-to-peer setup. For a public Internet server, the host generally needs a static IP so outside players can reach it.
Official hosting options
Keen Software House’s official host listing names GTX Gaming for the PC version and Nitrado for the Xbox version. Hosting terms, prices, regions, and program availability can change, so verify the current listing and the provider’s current terms before ordering. These names describe hosting options; they do not change the in-game joining path, which remains Main Screen → Join Game followed by the tab or Direct Connect method appropriate to the server.

Troubleshoot a failed connection by symptom
The server does not appear in any list
- Confirm the tab: public dedicated servers are under Servers, player-hosted public games under Games, local sessions under LAN, and friend sessions under Friends.
- On PC, verify the Steam/EOS toggle.
- Ask whether the host is currently online and whether the session is visible to your account.
- For a private server, stop searching the browser and request the exact IP for Direct Connect.
A console player cannot join
- Check that the server is EOS/crossplay compatible.
- Do not attempt to join a Steam-only listing; Steam servers are for PC Steam users.
- Ask the host to confirm that crossplay is enabled on the server configuration.
A PC player sees the wrong sessions
- Switch between Steam and EOS and search again.
- Use the network named by the host rather than whichever list happens to be populated.
- Confirm whether the host started a Steam account game or an EOS crossplay game.
The friend is online but the world is missing
- Ask the host to verify that the world is online and that multiplayer access permits friends.
- For Steam sessions, have the host send a fresh in-game invitation.
- Check whether you are looking in Friends while the game is actually a public listing under Games.
Direct Connect fails immediately
- Re-enter the IP exactly as supplied; do not replace it with a server name.
- Confirm that the address belongs to the current session and that the server has not restarted or changed addresses.
- Ask whether the server requires Steam or EOS, then select that network on PC.
The connection reaches loading but never finishes
- Allow the required mod download to complete, especially on the first join.
- Check whether the host changed the mod collection or restarted the server.
- Retry after returning to the Main Screen; if it still fails, report the precise loading stage and platform to the host.
Fast decision guide
- You have a public server name: open Join Game → Servers, choose Steam or EOS as required, and inspect Server Details.
- You see a public player game in your region: open Join Game → Games.
- A friend is hosting: open Join Game → Friends or accept the host’s Steam invitation.
- You are on the same local network: open Join Game → LAN.
- The host gave you an IP: open Join Game → Direct Connect and enter it exactly.
- You are on different platforms: use EOS and confirm that the server is configured for crossplay; Steam-only servers accept PC Steam players only.
