What you need before joining
RimWorld Together is a client-and-server multiplayer setup. The joining player needs the RimWorld game on Steam, the RimWorld Together Workshop item, and the dependencies installed through Steam Workshop. The server operator must have a running RimWorld Together server and must give you the address and port it is listening on.

- Steam and RimWorld: You must be able to launch the Steam edition of RimWorld and open its Mods menu.
- Client mods: Harmony and RimWorld Together must be installed and enabled on your computer.
- Server details: Obtain the exact IP address or DNS name and port from the operator. Ask whether the server is local, private, filtered, or public.
- Version compatibility: Your RimWorld Together client and the server must use compatible releases.
- Connection time: The first player may have to wait while the server initializes its shared world, depending on how that server was set up.
There is no ordinary public-server browser in the documented joining flow. You connect from Play Together by entering the address and port supplied by the operator, so a server not appearing in a list does not by itself indicate a client problem.
Install RimWorld Together through Steam Workshop
Use the Workshop installation flow rather than copying random mod files into the RimWorld directory. The documented sequence installs the multiplayer client and its required Harmony dependency together.

- Open Steam and go to the RimWorld Workshop.
- Subscribe to the RimWorld Together Workshop item.
- When Steam offers Subscribe to All, accept it. This installs Harmony and the other dependencies included by the Workshop item.
- Wait for Steam to finish downloading the subscriptions before starting RimWorld. If the game was already running, close and relaunch it so the new subscriptions are detected.
Enable the required mods and restart
Installing a Workshop item does not automatically guarantee that the required entries are active in your current mod list. Activate them in RimWorld before attempting to connect.
- Launch RimWorld and select Mods from the main menu.
- Find Harmony and enable it.
- Find RimWorld Together and enable it.
- Select Auto sort mods. This places the entries in the load order expected by the game and the multiplayer mod.
- Choose Save and Apply.
- When RimWorld asks to restart, allow the restart. A restart after changing the mod list is part of the documented installation flow.
If either entry is disabled after the restart, return to Mods, enable it again, auto-sort, apply, and restart once more. Do not try to connect with a partially applied load order: the main menu may open while the multiplayer component is still unavailable.
Join from the Play Together menu
Once RimWorld has restarted with the required mods active, joining is a direct address-and-port operation.
- At the RimWorld main menu, select Play Together.
- Enter a username when prompted and confirm it. Use a name the server operator can recognize.
- Enter the server IP address or DNS name supplied by the host.
- Enter the server port supplied by the host and confirm the connection.
- Wait for the connection and for any server-side world initialization to finish. Do not close the game merely because the first connection takes longer than a later reconnect.
The username is the identity you present to that server; it is not a substitute for the network address. The address field identifies the machine, while the port identifies the RimWorld Together service on that machine.
Use the correct address and port
The address depends on where the server is running relative to your game.

A common mistake is using the server’s private or loopback address from a different network. Ask the operator which address is intended for remote players and whether the server is currently exposed for outside connections. The official project’s container documentation maps the multiplayer traffic to port 25555; a provider panel may still display a different externally assigned port, so use the value shown for that particular server.
What happens during the first connection
The server process must already be running when you attempt to join. After authentication through the Play Together screen, the client waits for the server to answer and, when necessary, prepare the shared world. The official wiki notes that the first player to join may perform the initial world setup. That can make a first connection look slower than a subsequent one.

If it never completes, treat that as a troubleshooting signal rather than repeatedly entering the same address: verify that the process is running, confirm the address and port, and check that the client and server releases are compatible.
Troubleshoot a missing server or failed connection
Work through these checks in order. Each one eliminates a different failure mode.
1. Confirm that the server is actually running
The operator should verify that the server executable or container is running and has completed startup. A stopped process cannot answer a connection, even when the address and port are correct. If the operator has just launched it, wait for startup to finish before trying again.

2. Re-copy the address and port
Copy the address and port directly from the operator’s message or hosting panel. Check for a missing digit, an extra space, a swapped number, or a port copied from a different server. If you are on the same computer as the server, use the documented local-loopback example; if you are elsewhere, request the public address or DNS name instead.

3. Check the mod state and restart
Open Mods and verify that both Harmony and RimWorld Together are enabled. Run Auto sort mods, choose Save and Apply, and restart RimWorld after any change. A client that has subscribed to the Workshop item but has not applied the mod list will not load the multiplayer menu correctly.
4. Compare client and server versions
RimWorld Together publishes versioned releases, and the server and client need compatible versions. The project’s current release listed for this article is 26.10.4.1 — RimWorld-Together, 2026, released on 2026-10-04. Check the release or version-management information used by the operator rather than assuming that Steam’s latest Workshop state matches an older server.
Release 26.10.4.1 introduced the first implementation of automatic mod download during joining and improved keep-alive behavior for unstable or long-distance connections. Those are release-specific improvements, not a promise that an older server can use the same behavior. If the server is running an earlier release, ask the operator which client version to install and whether the server needs to be updated.
5. Ask whether the server is private, filtered, or offline
If the process is running and the versions appear compatible but the connection still fails, ask the operator whether access is restricted. A private or filtered server may reject players who are not authorized, while an offline server can still leave an old address circulating in a group chat. Confirm that you are using the address for the intended world.

6. Allow time for world initialization
On a newly created server, the first joining player can trigger initial world setup. Wait for that process to finish. If the operator confirms that setup has completed and later attempts still fail, return to the running-process, address, mod, and version checks rather than deleting local files at random.
7. Investigate unstable long-distance connections
Keep-alive improvements in 26.10.4.1 specifically target unstable or long-distance connections, but they cannot make an offline server reachable. If a connection starts and then drops, record when it fails and give that information to the operator. Confirm which release each side is running and whether the server is using the expected public address and port.

Joining is easier when the operator follows the same documented setup path and gives players unambiguous connection details. The official project supports both a standalone server program and a container deployment.
Standalone server files
- Download the latest server files from the official RimWorld Together project.
- Extract the files to the location where you want the server data to live.
- Execute the server program and wait for it to finish starting.
- Give local players the loopback address and documented local port only when they are playing on the same machine. Give remote players the public IP address or DNS name and the reachable port.
- Keep the process running while players connect. The first player may perform the shared-world initialization.
The project describes the server as having no heavy hardware dependencies, but it still requires reliable network bandwidth. “No heavy hardware dependencies” does not mean that a disconnected or poorly reachable machine can host a usable session.

Docker or another container deployment
The official project also supplies a container image and Docker commands. Follow the project’s command examples and map the container’s multiplayer traffic to port 25555. After the container is running, provide players with the address and externally reachable port that your network or hosting environment actually exposes. A container being healthy locally does not by itself tell remote players which public address to enter.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Both approaches can provide a RimWorld Together server. The choice is operational: who runs the process, maintains the files, and keeps the network endpoint available?

A managed-hosting guide published on 2026-03-11 documents the provider-panel flow: retrieve the server IP and port from the control panel, then enter them under Play Together. That procedure is the same for the joining player regardless of whether the operator started the server with an executable, Docker, or a hosting panel. Commercial availability, geographic location, pricing, and version support can change, so verify those details with the operator or provider before paying.

Version drift is especially common when Steam updates a Workshop subscription while a rented or self-hosted server remains on an earlier release. Before a scheduled session, have the operator announce the server’s RimWorld Together release and ask players to confirm their client version. If someone cannot connect after a Workshop update, do not assume that reinstalling the entire game is necessary; first compare the two RimWorld Together versions and follow the project’s version-management instructions.
When updating a server, stop the old process cleanly, install the intended server release, and tell players when the change is complete. Players should then apply the matching client mod state and restart RimWorld before joining. The automatic mod-download behavior introduced in 26.10.4.1 may reduce manual work on compatible servers, but it should not be used as a reason to ignore the operator’s stated version.
A practical pre-session checklist
- Steam has finished downloading RimWorld Together and its dependencies.
- Harmony and RimWorld Together are enabled under Mods.
- Auto sort mods has been run, the list has been saved and applied, and RimWorld has been restarted.
- The server process or container is running.
- You have the address intended for your location: loopback for the same computer, public IP or DNS name for remote play.
- You have the exact port from the operator or hosting panel.
- Your client and the server use compatible RimWorld Together releases.
- You know that the first player may need to wait for shared-world initialization.
With those conditions met, the complete joining path is: open RimWorld, select Play Together, enter your username, enter the supplied address and port, and wait for the server to finish accepting the connection.
