Before you try to connect
Most failed joins have a simple cause: the client is on a different game build, the address and port were entered in the wrong fields, or the required Workshop content is missing. Check these items first:

- Build: Confirm whether the server runs Build 41, Build 42, Stable, or another named branch. Build 41 and Build 42 are separate compatibility targets; a Build 42 client cannot join a Build 41 server, and the reverse is also true.
- Mods: Ask the owner for the exact Workshop collection or server mod list. Every player needs the same server-side content. The game can prompt you to download missing Workshop items, but you still need to let those downloads finish before reconnecting.
- Address: If the owner sends an address in the form
example-address:16261, split it at the colon. Putexample-addressin IP and16261in Server port. - Availability: A host session must be running when you connect. A dedicated or managed server must have completed startup and world generation.
- Credentials: Have the server password, if one exists, and choose a username and password you can remember. The first join creates your player account on that server.
Do not assume a larger player count means a better choice. Read the listing description, rules, mods and apparent player count before joining a public server.
Join a public server from the Internet list
This is the quickest route when you do not already know a server’s address.

- Launch Project Zomboid and select Join on the main menu.
- Open the Internet tab. The browser requests the current public-server listings.
- Review a listing’s name, description, rules, mod information and displayed player count. Some servers are public, while others require a password or approval even if they appear in the list.
- Select a server and choose the join command shown by the game.
- If prompted, enter the server password. Then enter your own account username and password and continue.
- Wait while the client downloads or loads the map and any requested Workshop items. The first connection can take noticeably longer than later joins.
If the server does not appear, the owner may be running a private, whitelisted or direct-address server rather than a public listing. Ask for its IP, port and password and use the Favorites method below.
Add a known server by IP address and port
Use this method for a friend’s dedicated server, a private community server or a managed server whose operator supplied connection details.

- From the main menu, choose Join.
- Open Favorites.
- Choose Add server.
- Enter a label you will recognize, such as the community name.
- Enter the server’s IP address or hostname in the IP field.
- Enter the numeric value supplied by the owner in Server port. The commonly cited default Project Zomboid port is 16261; use the owner’s value if it differs.
- Enter your account username and password. Enter the separate server password too if the owner configured one.
- Save the entry, select it in Favorites and choose Join server.
Read a host-and-port string correctly
A string such as 203.0.113.25:16261 contains two values, not one. The part before the colon is the address; the part after it is the port. Typing the entire string into the IP box, or leaving the port box at a different value, sends your client to the wrong endpoint and commonly produces a timeout or failed connection.
What happens on the first join
The server may take time to send map data and initialize your player account. A blank or apparently stalled loading screen is not automatically a failure during this stage. Give the connection time to complete, especially when the server is generating a world or has a large mod set. If the game reports missing Workshop items, allow the requested downloads, return to the server entry and try again.
Choose the right multiplayer arrangement
Project Zomboid multiplayer can mean a temporary co-op session, a continuously available dedicated server, a public listing or a rented managed instance. The connection screen is similar, but the way you discover the server and the obligations on the owner differ.

Steam co-op: the simplest small-group option
The host chooses Main menu → Host, configures the world and server settings, starts the session, then invites friends through Steam or the in-game invite flow. As a joining player, accept that invitation and follow the prompts. This option avoids entering a public IP, but it is tied to the host’s session availability. If the host closes the game or stops the world, the session is no longer reachable.

The owner installs Project Zomboid Dedicated Server from Steam’s Tools list, runs StartServer64.bat, completes the administrator-password prompt and keeps the server process running. Once the owner gives you the server address and port, you join through Join → Favorites → Add server. The owner also has to configure network access; the Steam hosting guide documents UDP ports 16261 and 16262 for dedicated hosting. A server that is installed but whose process has stopped cannot accept your connection.
Managed hosting: less server administration
A managed operator supplies an address and port and handles the underlying server installation. You still use the normal Favorites workflow and must select the same game build and Workshop mods as the instance. If the operator changes the branch or mod collection, update your client before trying to reconnect.
Build 41 and Build 42 compatibility
The game build is a hard compatibility boundary, not a cosmetic version label. A Build 42 client cannot enter a Build 41 server, and a Build 41 client cannot enter a Build 42 server. Confirm the exact branch with the server owner before changing anything in Steam.
Stay on Build 41 with the legacy branch

- Open Steam.
- Right-click Project Zomboid in the library.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Game Versions & Betas.
- Select legacy41.
- Wait for Steam to finish switching and updating the installation, then launch the game and connect again.
Switching branches can change which saves and mods are available. Build 41 savegames are not compatible with Build 42, so do not expect a Build 41 world to load in Build 42.
Build 42 multiplayer is still experimental
In an official announcement dated December 11, 2025, The Indie Stone wrote: Multiplayer is WIP and has been released for stress testing.
The same announcement strongly recommended playing in co-op or on whitelisted servers, advised against more than 20 players on a server at that stage, and warned that future Unstable updates could disrupt ongoing multiplayer games. It also advised disabling debug.
For the official Build 42.13 multiplayer stress-test branch, the guidance was to disable all mods, including client-only mods. That instruction is stricter than the normal rule of matching a server’s Workshop collection. If you are joining a Build 42.13 stress-test server, remove or disable every mod first, then restart the game before connecting.
Workshop mods and missing-content errors
Mod synchronization is part of joining, not an optional cosmetic step. A server can require a specific set of Workshop items, and every player needs a compatible set.
When the game offers downloads
- Read the missing-item message and allow the game to subscribe to or download the requested Workshop content.
- Wait for Steam and the game to finish downloading. Do not repeatedly cancel and relaunch while the files are still arriving.
- Return to the server entry and choose Join server again.
- If the server still reports a mismatch, ask the owner for the current list. A server may have removed, added or reordered mods since your last visit.
When the server refuses a modded client
Do not add random versions of a mod to “make the list match.” Confirm the exact Workshop items and any required load order with the operator. For the Build 42.13 official stress test, follow the specific instruction to disable all mods, including those described as client-only.

A systematic troubleshooting sequence
Work through these checks in order. Changing several variables at once makes it difficult to identify the cause.
1. Confirm that the server has finished starting
Ask the owner whether the process is still generating its world or loading Workshop content. A server that has not completed startup may be visible but unable to accept players. Wait for the owner’s confirmation, then try once more.

2. Match the exact branch
Compare the client and server labels: Stable, Build 41, Build 42 or another exact branch. If you are on the wrong branch, switch through Steam’s Properties → Game Versions & Betas menu as directed by the owner. Do not attempt to solve a build mismatch by changing passwords or ports.
3. Re-enter the address and port
Open the Favorite entry and verify each field independently. Split any host:port notation at the colon. The address belongs in IP; the numeric suffix belongs in Server port. Use the owner’s port, with 16261 being the commonly cited default rather than a guarantee that every server uses it.
4. Check both kinds of password
A server can require a server password in addition to your own account username and password. Ask the owner to confirm capitalization and punctuation. Use a remembered account password because the first successful join creates your player account on that server; changing it casually can leave you unsure which credentials belong to that account.
5. Reconcile Workshop content
Compare your subscribed and enabled items with the server’s current list. Let the game download missing items, then reconnect. If the server is part of the official Build 42.13 stress test, disable all mods instead of trying to reproduce a mod list.
6. Check the dedicated server process and firewall
For a self-hosted server, the owner should confirm that StartServer64.bat is still running and that the firewall allows the server software. The documented dedicated-hosting UDP ports are 16261 and 16262; blocking them can prevent discovery or connection. A player cannot repair a stopped process or a blocked inbound port from the Join menu, so report the exact error to the owner.
7. Allow extra time for the first map load
After the address, branch, credentials and mods are correct, wait through the initial map-data transfer. Disconnecting during this phase can make a healthy server look unreachable. If the loading state never advances after the owner confirms the server is ready, capture the error text and repeat the earlier checks rather than repeatedly changing settings.
What to ask a friend or server operator for
Request all connection details in one message so you do not have to guess:
- Server name or a label to use in Favorites
- IP address or hostname
- Server port (the common default is 16261, but the operator’s value controls)
- Exact game build or Steam beta branch
- Server password, if enabled
- Workshop collection or complete mod list
- Whether the server is public, private or whitelisted
- Whether the server is still starting, restarting or undergoing an update
For a co-op session, ask for an invitation instead of an IP unless the host specifically configured a direct-address server. For a managed or dedicated instance, ask whether the address changed after a restart or migration.
Practical expectations for Build 42 servers
Build 42 multiplayer should be treated as a testing-stage feature rather than a fully settled, large-scale hosting target. The Indie Stone’s December 11, 2025 guidance recommends co-op or whitelisted servers, says more than 20 players is currently inadvisable, asks players to disable debug and warns that future Unstable updates may disrupt existing multiplayer games. Plan for occasional incompatibility after an update and verify the branch before reporting a connection failure.
Keep separate expectations for saves as well. A Build 41 save cannot be carried into Build 42, so back up or continue a world on the branch on which it was created. Joining the right server does not make an incompatible save portable.
