How to Join a Mario Kart World Online Tournament

Enter a tournament’s four-digit Event ID through Online Play in Mario Kart World. Check the official Nintendo listing for active dates, eligibility, race settings, ranking conditions, and results notices.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To join a Mario Kart World online tournament, open the game, choose Online Play, press the minus button to search for an event, and enter the event’s four-digit Event ID. Use the ID on the official Nintendo listing for the tournament you want, and participate during its stated Event Period.

The important distinction is that an event code is not the same as the code for a friend’s private room. The event page controls the dates, rules, eligibility, and code, so check it immediately before you try to enter.

What you need before joining

Prepare the basic requirements before looking for an event in the game. Nintendo’s event guidance identifies these items as necessary:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A Nintendo Switch 2 system. Mario Kart World is the game used for these events, and Nintendo names the Switch 2 system as a participation requirement.
  • Mario Kart World. Install and start the game on the system you will use for the tournament.
  • A Nintendo Account. Your account is used for online participation and can be associated with information shown on an event results page.
  • Internet access. The tournament is entered and played through the game’s online features.
  • A Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo says this membership is sold separately. Online features are not available in every country, and Nintendo’s membership terms apply.
  • The current official event listing. You need the listing to confirm the event’s four-digit Event ID, Event Period, region, eligibility rules, race format, and any ranking or reward conditions.

Having the game and a membership does not automatically enroll you in every event. Each event has its own listing and code. Treat the listing as the authority for that particular competition rather than relying on a code saved from an earlier tournament.

#1 Best Overall
Mario Kart™ World (Nintendo Switch 2)
  • Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
  • Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
  • Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
  • Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
  • Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam

Where to find the right tournament listing

Start with Nintendo’s official event page for the tournament you intend to play. Event pages can use labels such as Online Play and Find Event, while the in-game route is described as opening Online Play and pressing the minus button to search for an event.

Before entering anything, read the page all the way through the event-identification and eligibility sections. Confirm all of the following:

  • The event name matches the tournament you meant to join.
  • The Event Period is current and has not ended.
  • The page publishes a four-digit Event ID.
  • Your country or region is eligible.
  • You meet any age or other participation requirements.
  • The race mode and settings suit what you expect to play.
  • Any separate ranking, prize, or point conditions are clear.
  • The page explains what information may be displayed in results.

Do not assume that a code found in an old post, video, message, or screenshot remains active. Nintendo assigns the Event ID to the listed event, and the period and rules belong to that event. A code that was correct for one competition is not a general-purpose tournament key.

How to enter the tournament code

  1. Open the official Nintendo event page. Check the event name, region, eligibility, Event Period, rules, and four-digit Event ID. Keep the page available while you enter the code so you can compare each digit.
  2. Start Mario Kart World on Nintendo Switch 2. Use the game rather than trying to submit the code on a general Nintendo Account page. Nintendo’s instruction is that participation occurs in the game during the Event Period.
  3. Select Online Play. This is the multiplayer area that contains the route to listed events.
  4. Press the minus (-) button to search for an event. The minus-button command opens the event-search function described in Nintendo’s event instructions.
  5. Enter the event’s four-digit Event ID. Type the digits exactly as they appear on the official listing. Make sure you are using the Event ID, not a six-digit Room ID from a friend.
  6. Select the matching event. Compare the event name or details shown in the game with the listing you opened. If the code leads to a different event than expected, stop and recheck the number.
  7. Follow the in-game prompts. Complete the participation flow shown by the game and play under the event’s displayed rules.
  8. Play during the Event Period. Nintendo of America states: “To enter, you must participate in the Event in the Mario Kart World game during the Event Period.” Entering a code outside the listed period does not satisfy that requirement.

The central route is therefore Online Play → minus button → event search → four-digit Event ID. If you remember only one sequence, remember that one.

Example: Nintendo’s Fall Cup 2026 listing

Nintendo of America’s Fall Cup 2026 event example lists Event ID 3616. Its Event Period is September 19, 2026, through December 12, 2026. During that period, a player would open Mario Kart World, choose Online Play, press minus to search for an event, and enter 3616.

The same listing specifies the following event settings:

  • VS Race mode
  • 150cc speed class
  • No teams
  • Normal items
  • No COM
  • Connected course selection
  • Up to 32 races

Those settings describe that particular Fall Cup listing. They are not universal defaults for every Mario Kart World tournament. Another event can publish a different mode, schedule, eligibility rule, or race limit. Use the current page for the event you are joining, even if you have played a similarly named competition before.

The Fall Cup dates and code are useful examples, but event pages are time-sensitive. Once the Event Period ends, the listing may no longer accept participation. Recheck the live Nintendo page instead of treating 3616 or any other old code as permanent.

Event ID or friend-room ID?

There are two different online-entry systems that are easy to confuse.

Listed event or tournament

A Nintendo-listed event uses a four-digit Event ID. You reach the search field from Online Play by pressing the minus button. The Event ID identifies the published event, whose page supplies the dates, rules, and eligibility information.

Friend-hosted online room

A friend’s private or hosted room uses a different route. Choose Friends, select an online friend, or choose Search by Room ID, then enter the host’s six-digit Room ID. Nintendo Support describes this as the room-joining process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A six-digit Room ID will not enter a listed tournament, and a four-digit Event ID will not take you to a friend’s room. If someone sends you six digits, ask whether they intend you to join a room. If a tournament page gives you four digits, use the event-search route instead.

What to verify on the event page

Reading the event page is part of joining correctly. The code alone does not tell you whether you are eligible, when the event is active, or how results are handled.

Dates and local timing

Check the start and end of the Event Period before entering. Compare the page’s stated dates and times with your location so you do not mistake an event that is about to close for one that is just beginning. If the page has a time-zone note, follow it. The requirement is participation in the game during the listed period, not merely entering the code at some earlier point.

Event identity and code

Match the four-digit Event ID to the event name on the official page. A copied code can contain a transposed digit, and an older code can belong to a finished event. Keep the page open while typing and verify the event name after the game finds it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Region and eligibility

Read regional and age restrictions, along with any other eligibility language. Nintendo notes that online features are not available in every country. A player can have the game and Nintendo Switch Online membership and still be outside an event’s permitted region or fail another listed condition.

Race format and settings

Look for the mode, speed class, team setting, item setting, COM setting, course-selection method, and race limit. The Fall Cup example uses VS Race, 150cc, no teams, normal items, no COM, connected course selection, and up to 32 races. These details affect what you should expect once you enter and can differ from another event.

Ranking, prizes, and points

Do not assume that entering an event automatically qualifies you for every ranking, prize, or point reward. Check the event page and any linked official rules for extra conditions. The comparison should include whether there is an attempt limit, a required number of races, a score threshold, or another qualification rule if the listing states one.

Results and account visibility

Nintendo warns that account-related details, including your username, player icon, and score, may be visible on an event results page. The Fall Cup listing also warns that account restrictions or certain player names may affect whether a player is included in rankings or how that player is displayed. Read the results notice before participating so you understand what may become public.

How to compare more than one event

If several Nintendo events are available, compare them systematically rather than choosing only by name. Create a quick checklist for each listing:

  1. Schedule: Record the Event Period and the applicable time zone.
  2. Entry code: Write down the current four-digit Event ID and confirm that it belongs to the event you selected.
  3. Mode and rules: Compare VS Race or another listed mode, speed class, team rules, items, COM setting, course selection, and race limit.
  4. Eligibility: Check region, age, account, and any other participation requirements.
  5. Attempts: Look for an event-specific limit on entries or races if the page states one.
  6. Rankings and rewards: Note any separate conditions for points, prizes, or leaderboard placement.
  7. Public results: Check whether usernames, icons, scores, or other account details can appear on a results page.

This comparison prevents a common mistake: joining a real event but expecting the schedule or rules of a different one. Nintendo’s official event page controls its own code and conditions.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Using a code from an old event

Event IDs are event-specific. If the page you saved is outside its Event Period, find the current listing and use its code instead. The Fall Cup’s 3616 is an example tied to its September 19–December 12, 2026 period, not a permanent access code.

Entering the code in the wrong menu

The event code belongs in Online Play after pressing the minus button to search for an event. It is not entered through the Friends menu, and it is not the same field used for a six-digit Room ID.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confusing an event with a room

If the host gives you six digits and tells you to use Friends or Search by Room ID, you are joining a room. If Nintendo’s listing gives you four digits and an Event Period, you are joining a listed event. Confirm which type of activity you want before entering.

Ignoring the period

Participation must happen in the game during the Event Period. A player who finds the listing but waits until after the closing date has not joined during the qualifying window.

Assuming the settings

Do not infer speed class, items, teams, COM opponents, course selection, or race count from another tournament. Read the settings on the active page. The Fall Cup’s 150cc and 32-race limit apply to that listing only.

Skipping eligibility and results notices

Regional or age restrictions can prevent participation, and account restrictions or certain names can affect rankings. Read those sections before you enter, especially if you care about a public leaderboard, prize, or points.

Expecting online access without the required membership

Nintendo lists Nintendo Switch Online membership as a requirement and says it is sold separately. Check that the account and system you plan to use have the needed online access before the event begins.

A practical joining checklist

Use this short checklist immediately before starting:

  • I have a Nintendo Switch 2 system and Mario Kart World.
  • I am signed in with a Nintendo Account and have internet access.
  • My Nintendo Switch Online membership is available; I understand it is sold separately.
  • I opened the official page for the exact event I want.
  • I checked the region, age, and other eligibility requirements.
  • I recorded the current four-digit Event ID.
  • I confirmed the Event Period and relevant local timing.
  • I read the race settings and any attempt, ranking, prize, or point conditions.
  • I understand that account information such as username, player icon, and score may appear in results.
  • I know whether I am joining a listed event or a friend’s six-digit Room ID.

Then follow the in-game sequence: Online Play, press minus, search for the event, enter the four-digit ID, select the matching listing, and participate before the Event Period ends.

What do I need to participate?

Nintendo lists a Nintendo Switch 2 system, Mario Kart World, a Nintendo Account, internet access, and Nintendo Switch Online membership. The membership is sold separately, and online features are not available in every country.

How do I join a friend’s room instead of a tournament?

Use the Friends menu, select an online friend or choose Search by Room ID, and enter the host’s six-digit Room ID. A friend-room ID is different from the four-digit Event ID used for a listed event.

Can I reuse an old Event ID?

Do not assume you can. Event IDs are specific to their events, and the code only applies with that event’s published conditions and Event Period. Find the current official listing and use its code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if I enter the code outside the Event Period?

Nintendo says you must participate in the event in the game during the Event Period. Entering or finding a code outside that period does not satisfy the event’s participation requirement.

Are Fall Cup settings the default for every tournament?

No. The Fall Cup example lists VS Race, 150cc, no teams, normal items, no COM, connected course selection, and up to 32 races. Those are specific to that event, so read the active listing for another tournament’s settings.

Do I automatically qualify for rankings, prizes, or points by entering?

Not necessarily. Check the event page and linked official rules for additional requirements, including any attempt limits or conditions for rankings, prizes, or point rewards.

Can my Nintendo Account information appear publicly?

Nintendo notes that your username, player icon, and score may appear on an event results page. The Fall Cup listing also says account restrictions or certain player names can affect inclusion or display in rankings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check if the event does not appear?

Recheck that you selected Online Play, pressed the minus button for event search, entered the correct four-digit Event ID, and are within the listed Event Period. Then confirm the event’s region and eligibility requirements and compare the displayed event with the official listing.

The Bottom Line

Find the current Nintendo event page, confirm its Event Period and rules, then open Mario Kart World and go to Online Play → minus button → event search. Enter the listing’s four-digit Event ID and participate before the period ends. Use the Friends menu and a six-digit Room ID only when you are joining a friend-hosted room.
