Rockstar confirms that you can change heritage, features, appearance, and apparel for a fee, but it does not explicitly guarantee that every saved outfit type will persist in every case. The practical answer to “Will changing my appearance delete my saved outfits?” is therefore not a universal yes or no. The documented appearance-editing option changes the existing character; the official guidance does not promise what happens to every custom, special, or unusual saved outfit in every situation. Treat outfit notes and a post-edit check as sensible precautions—not as proof that an outfit will be lost or preserved.

What changing appearance does—and what it does not do
Change Appearance is an edit to your existing character, not a character replacement. Rockstar says the option is in the Interaction Menu’s Style section and lets you change heritage, features, appearance, and apparel for a fee. The available official guidance does not say that this option changes your character’s gender: Rockstar states that gender cannot be changed after initial character creation. Rockstar Support: Appearance and Gender Changes in GTA Online
Rockstar’s wording is useful because it sets the boundary of what the edit is for. It is a way to adjust the existing character’s listed appearance-related categories. It is not the same operation as deleting a character, and it is not a route for changing the character’s gender after creation. If your goal is to alter heritage, features, appearance, or apparel, use the appearance-editing option rather than a destructive character-management action.

Outfit persistence needs a careful answer. The available Rockstar guidance does not promise that every saved, special, or unusual outfit will be preserved through every appearance-editing scenario. That is not proof that outfits will be lost; it means you should treat checking your saved slots as a sensible precaution rather than rely on an across-the-board guarantee.
Also separate two questions that can sound alike: “Can I edit the character?” and “Will every saved outfit come through unchanged?” The first has a direct documented answer: Rockstar says you can change the listed appearance categories for a fee. The second has no universal guarantee in the cited guidance. A careful guide should not turn that absence into either a promise of safety or a claim of certain loss.
Before you open Change Appearance
Make a quick record of the outfits you care about
Note or capture the names and clothing combinations of your important saved outfits before you edit. This is a precaution, not a Rockstar-required backup step. It gives you a reference if an outfit is missing from the selector or looks different afterward.
Focus on the outfits you would genuinely want to check, rather than trying to create a formal backup procedure. The published instructions do not describe an export, cloud backup, or restoration process for saved outfits. A written list or screenshots of the outfit names and combinations simply help you remember what you were using before the edit. If a name alone would not identify the combination, include the visible clothing details you care about.
This small bit of preparation also makes the post-edit check more useful. Instead of relying on memory or scrolling without a goal, you can compare the saved selector against a known list. It does not change how the game handles outfits, and it cannot guarantee recovery if something is absent. Its purpose is to help you notice whether the outfits you value are still represented after returning to freemode.
Know the fee and the limits
Rockstar confirms that appearance editing costs a fee but does not specify an amount in its support article. GTABase’s Interaction Menu guide, last updated January 24, 2026, lists the Change Appearance fee as GTA$100,000. Check the amount displayed in your game before confirming, since menu details and fees can change. GTABase: GTA 5 Interaction Menu options
The distinction matters: GTA$100,000 is the amount listed by GTABase, not an amount stated in Rockstar’s support article. The game’s own confirmation screen is the practical point to check before you proceed. If the displayed fee differs from the guide, rely on the amount shown in your current game rather than assuming a menu guide’s figure is guaranteed across versions and dates.

- Play through an epic single player experience using three very different characters.
- Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.

Do not start the edit expecting to change gender. Rockstar’s stated limit is that gender cannot be changed after the initial character creation process. The official answer is categorical: “No. There is no way to change your character’s gender after the initial character creation process.” If gender is the reason you are considering this menu, the documented appearance-editing option will not accomplish that goal.
It is also useful to distinguish a fee from an outfit guarantee. Paying the fee grants access to the appearance edit described by Rockstar; neither the official fee statement nor GTABase’s listed amount says that the payment provides outfit backup or preservation. Decide whether the appearance changes are worth the displayed charge on their own merits, and separately plan to inspect your saved outfits afterward.
How to change your appearance
- Record the outfits you want to keep. Write down or capture the saved outfit names and combinations you may want to verify later. This is an optional precaution, not a required game step, and it is not a guarantee that an outfit can be restored.
- Open the Interaction Menu. GTABase lists M on PC, holding the touchpad on PS4/PS5, and holding View on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Controls can vary with platform, settings, or game version. If a listed input does not open the menu in your setup, use the control mapping shown by your game rather than assuming the menu is unavailable.
- Find Change Appearance. Go to the Style or Appearance area of the menu and select Change Appearance. Rockstar calls the location the Style section; GTABase lists Change Appearance under Appearance, so the label or grouping may differ by version.
- Make the edits you want. Rockstar identifies heritage, features, appearance, and apparel as changeable categories. Gender is not changeable after character creation. Keep the scope of the option in mind: this is an edit to the current character, not a character deletion or replacement.
- Review the in-game fee and confirm only if you want to proceed. GTABase lists GTA$100,000 as the fee in its January 24, 2026 guide; Rockstar’s support article confirms a fee without specifying its amount. Read the figure presented by your game before you accept the edit.
- Return to freemode and check your saved outfits. Open Appearance > Outfit and inspect the saved slots you noted before editing. Compare what is listed with your notes; do not assume that the lack of an explicit guarantee means outfits were erased.
The menu inputs above are platform-specific guide listings, not a claim that every control setup is identical. On PC, the listed default is M. On PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, the listed action is to hold the touchpad. On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, the listed action is to hold View. If your platform version or custom controls differ, the menu labels and controls displayed in your game take priority.
The naming difference between “Style” and “Appearance” should not send you toward a different character-management operation. Rockstar’s support article calls the location Style, while GTABase organizes Change Appearance under Appearance in its guide. Follow the path available in your menu and verify that the selected option is specifically Change Appearance before continuing. The important distinction is the operation you choose, not whether a guide uses one menu heading or the other.

Before accepting, pause on the game’s displayed fee and make sure you are comfortable proceeding with the edits you intend to make. Rockstar establishes that there is a fee; GTABase reports GTA$100,000 as of its January 24, 2026 guide. Since the official support article does not quote the price, avoid treating that guide figure as an immutable price. The confirmation screen is your immediate reference.
How to check whether your saved outfits are still available
GTABase describes an Outfit selector with 20 saved custom outfit slots. After the appearance edit, open the Outfit selector and look for the outfits you recorded. If a slot is present, select it to check whether the combination still appears as expected. The slot count and selector details are guide-reported figures, not a Rockstar promise about outfit preservation.
Use your before-edit list as a checklist. First, see whether the expected saved entries appear in the selector. Then select the entries you care about and check whether the visible combination matches what you noted. Checking both the slot and the displayed outfit answers two different practical questions: whether the entry is there, and whether it appears as expected when selected. Neither check establishes a universal rule for every outfit type or every platform version.

The “20 saved custom outfits” figure is a menu-guide detail from GTABase, last updated January 24, 2026. It is useful context for understanding the selector, but it is not a promise that all outfit categories use those slots or that every item combination will be retained in every edge case. Do not interpret the listed slot count as an official Rockstar guarantee about how appearance editing interacts with outfits.

If the selector still contains an outfit but the displayed combination is not what you expected, record what you see before making other changes. If an entry is missing, note that too. The sources do not describe a particular recovery procedure for an absent outfit, so it would be misleading to promise that a specific menu action will restore it. Inspection is a way to understand the current state, not a confirmed repair method.
If an outfit is absent or looks different, avoid deleting or replacing the character as a troubleshooting shortcut. The available sources do not establish that a particular missing outfit can be restored through a specific recovery procedure. Use the in-game selector to inspect what remains and consult Rockstar Support if you need help with an account or character issue.
Keep the conclusion proportionate to what you observe. Finding the saved outfit in its slot is evidence that it is currently selectable; it does not create a guarantee about every other saved or special outfit. Not finding one of your noted entries means you should seek help if needed, but it does not prove that appearance editing universally deletes outfits. The official guidance simply does not settle every outfit-persistence case.
Do not confuse an appearance edit with character deletion
Deleting a character is a separate, destructive action—not a way to change appearance. Rockstar’s deletion instructions include a permanent confirmation step requiring the player to enter “delete,” and provide different directions for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC Enhanced, PS4, Xbox One, and PC Legacy. Do not use the deletion flow for an ordinary appearance edit. Rockstar Support: How to delete characters in Grand Theft Auto Online

If your task is changing the look of the character you already use, stay with Change Appearance. Do not select deletion, create a replacement, or proceed through a delete confirmation because you are uncertain about outfit persistence. Character deletion has its own platform/version-specific directions and is explicitly treated by Rockstar as a permanent operation.
Rockstar’s deletion guide, last updated June 18, 2025, distinguishes instructions for newer and older platform versions: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC Enhanced on one side, and PS4, Xbox One, and PC Legacy on the other. Those paths are relevant only as a caution about the separate deletion operation. They are not additional steps required for editing appearance, and they should not be followed to try to protect or retrieve saved outfits.

There are two actions to keep distinct:
- Change Appearance: edit the existing character’s heritage, features, appearance, and apparel through the Interaction Menu for a fee. Rockstar documents this feature, and it does not change gender after initial character creation.
- Delete character: remove the selected character through a separate confirmation flow. Rockstar’s instructions require entering “delete” to confirm, and the action is permanent. It is not an appearance-editing option.
When in doubt, back out rather than confirming a destructive action. The appearance menu and deletion flow have different purposes. If you have reached a confirmation asking you to enter “delete,” you are not in the ordinary Change Appearance procedure described here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the answer about outfit loss is qualified
The official Rockstar article, last updated April 20, 2024, explains which character details can be changed and that a fee applies. GTABase’s January 24, 2026 guide supplies the menu controls, the listed GTA$100,000 fee, and its 20-slot custom outfit selector. Neither source explicitly guarantees the persistence of every outfit category across every appearance-editing case. Because of that gap, the safest practical approach is to record the outfits you value, edit the existing character through Change Appearance, and verify the slots afterward—not assume either that all outfits are guaranteed safe or that they will automatically be erased.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →This distinction between confirmed procedure and unresolved outcome is why cautious wording matters. Rockstar confirms the feature and its limits, including the gender restriction. GTABase provides useful current menu detail, including the fee it lists and the outfit selector it describes. Neither source says that every saved, special, or unusual outfit always survives every appearance edit, nor do they say that an appearance edit necessarily removes outfits. The honest answer remains conditional rather than a blanket promise.
The date attached to each detail also helps readers weigh it. Rockstar’s appearance and gender answer was last updated April 20, 2024. GTABase’s menu guide was last updated January 24, 2026, and lists the $100,000 fee and 20 custom outfit slots. Rockstar’s character-deletion instructions were last updated June 18, 2025. Menu controls, prices, or labels can change, so check the current game screen for the immediate interface and fee rather than relying solely on an older description.
There is no reason to buy a separate product to carry out this menu procedure if you already play GTA Online; the steps happen inside the game. Readers who do not own a compatible GTA V edition would need to check the current platform and edition details before purchasing, but game ownership is not a required extra step for an existing player who can already access GTA Online.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will changing my GTA Online character’s appearance delete saved outfits?
Rockstar confirms that you can edit an existing character’s heritage, features, appearance, and apparel for a fee, but its guidance does not explicitly guarantee that every saved, special, or unusual outfit persists in every case. Record the outfits you care about first and check their slots after the edit. The available guidance does not establish either universal outfit loss or universal preservation.

Does Change Appearance edit my current character or create a new one?
It edits your existing character through the Interaction Menu. It is different from deleting a character or creating a replacement, and deletion should not be used as an appearance-editing workaround.

How much does Change Appearance cost?
Rockstar confirms that the option has a fee but does not name the amount in its support article. GTABase’s Interaction Menu guide, last updated January 24, 2026, lists GTA$100,000. Check the amount displayed by your game before confirming.
Can I change my character’s gender after creating it?
No. Rockstar Support says there is no way to change a character’s gender after the initial character creation process. Change Appearance is not a gender-change route.
Where do I find Change Appearance?
Open the Interaction Menu and look in the Style or Appearance area for Change Appearance. Rockstar calls the location the Style section; GTABase lists the option under Appearance, so the grouping may differ by version.
What button opens the Interaction Menu?
GTABase lists M on PC, holding the touchpad on PS4 or PS5, and holding View on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. Controls can vary by settings or game version, so use the mapping in your game if those inputs do not match.
How many custom outfit slots does the selector have?
GTABase’s guide, last updated January 24, 2026, describes 20 saved custom outfit slots. That is a guide-reported menu figure, not a Rockstar guarantee about outfit persistence during appearance editing.
What should I do if an outfit is missing after the edit?
Compare the selector with the outfit names and combinations you recorded before editing. The cited guidance does not provide a specific outfit-recovery procedure, so do not assume that deleting or replacing the character will restore anything. Contact Rockstar Support if you need help with an account or character issue.
Is deleting a character a way to change appearance?
No. Deletion is a separate permanent action. Rockstar’s deletion instructions require a confirmation step in which the player enters “delete.” Use Change Appearance for an ordinary edit, and back out if you reach a character-deletion confirmation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo I need to back up my outfits before changing appearance?
Rockstar does not list a required outfit-backup step in its appearance guidance. As a precaution, note or capture the names and combinations you care about so you can check them afterward. This is a personal reference, not a formal backup or restoration guarantee.
The Bottom Line
Use the Interaction Menu’s Change Appearance option to edit your existing GTA Online character; do not delete or replace the character. Rockstar confirms the editable categories and says gender cannot be changed after creation. GTABase lists a GTA$100,000 fee and 20 custom outfit slots in its January 24, 2026 guide, but no cited source guarantees every outfit type will persist. Note the outfits you value, confirm the fee shown in your game, then inspect the saved slots after the edit.
