To join a Killing Floor 2 server, use the in-game server browser, add the server to Steam’s Game Servers favourites with its IP:PORT, or open the address from the game console. The browser is the easiest option when the server is listed; Steam favourites and the console are useful when you have a direct address. A password-protected server will request its password, or require it in the console command.
If you need to run your own session, Godlike.Host Killing Floor 2 servers provide a game panel for server management. Its Killing Floor 2 plans list 10, 20 and 30 slots; Survival is a 6-player mode and Versus Survival an up-to-12-player mode (Tripwire’s Killing Floor 2 wiki, archived 11 Jul 2026).

The exact menu wording can vary between game builds and guides. Community instructions refer to both Matchmaking > Browse Servers and Home > Browse Servers, so use whichever equivalent browse option appears in your current client. The procedures below are community and hosting guidance rather than confirmed official Tripwire support instructions.

What you need before connecting
Have the server’s address, game port, and password ready if the server is private. A host panel commonly displays the address as IP:PORT. If a friend is hosting from home, ask for the public WAN address and the game port, not an address such as 192.168.x.x that works only inside the host’s private network.
#1 Best Overall
- Listed server: the in-game browser can find it without you knowing an address.
- Direct connection: you need the host’s public address and port for Steam favourites or the console.
- Password: obtain it from the host before attempting to join.
- Recent server: a newly started server may need about five to ten minutes before it appears in Steam’s server browser.
If you are hosting rather than merely joining, the router and host computer must allow the required ports. The port values are listed later in this guide.
Method 1: join through the in-game server browser
This is normally the simplest route because you can search and filter available sessions without copying an address.
- Launch Killing Floor 2 and wait for the main menu.
- Open the server-browsing option. Depending on the build or guide you are following, it may be under Matchmaking > Browse Servers or Home > Browse Servers.
- Allow the list to populate. If the server was just started, give it roughly five to ten minutes before assuming it is unavailable.
- Use the available filters. Examples documented by community guides include Game Type and Difficulty.
- Select the desired server and choose Join.
- Enter the password if a prompt appears. A password-protected server will not accept an empty or incorrect value.
The browser is best when you do not know the server address or want to compare several public sessions. Older community posts describe online matchmaking as unreliable and recommend the browser instead; those reports are not current official performance measurements, so treat them as practical historical guidance rather than a guarantee.

If the server does not appear
First confirm the filters are not excluding it, then refresh or reopen the list. Check with the host that the server has fully started and that its public address and game port are correct. A fresh instance can take five to ten minutes to register. If it still does not appear, use the Steam favourites or console method with the address supplied by the host.
Method 2: add the server in Steam’s Game Servers window
Steam’s server tool lets you save a direct address as a favourite. This is useful when the in-game list cannot find the server or when you regularly revisit a friend’s server.
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Select View > Game Servers.
- Open the Favourites tab.
- Choose Add a Server.
- Enter the server’s complete address in the form
IP:PORT. Use the game port supplied by the host; do not substitute a private LAN address when connecting over the internet. - Add the address to your favourites.
- Select the new entry and click Connect.
- Enter the server password if Steam or the game requests it.
The server must be listening on the address and port you entered. A typo, a changed public address, or a host that has not finished starting will produce the same practical result as an offline server, so confirm those details before changing client settings.

Method 3: connect with the in-game console
A direct console command can bypass browsing. The documented procedure is to open the console with the tilde key (~) and issue an open command.

- Press the tilde key (
~). Keyboard layouts can place this key differently; use the key that produces the game’s console prompt. - Type
open IP:PORT, replacing the address and port with the host’s values. - Press Enter and wait for the connection attempt to complete.
Password syntax is not consistent across the guides available for this game. One form is open IP:PORT?password=PASSWORD; another guide shows OPEN IP:PORT;PASSWORD. Because these forms conflict, use the syntax supplied by the server host or test the current client’s accepted form rather than assuming one notation works everywhere. Keep the password in the command exactly as provided, including capitalization if the host requires it.
Choosing the right connection method
| Method | Ease | Needs the server address? | When it is most useful | Password handling |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In-game server browser | Simplest | No, when the server is listed | Finding public servers and filtering by game type or difficulty | Enter it when prompted |
| Steam Game Servers favourites | Moderate | Yes, as IP:PORT |
Saving a known server or connecting when the in-game list fails | Enter it when requested by the connection |
| In-game console | Advanced | Yes, as IP:PORT |
Direct connection when you have the exact address | Use the host’s supported command syntax |
Start with the browser if the server is public and visible. Use Steam favourites when you want a persistent saved entry. Use the console when the host gives you a direct address and you need to connect without relying on the list.

Ports involved in a Killing Floor 2 server
These are the port assignments reported by fan-wiki and hosting guides for a typical setup:
| Function | Port | Protocol | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game connection | 7777 | UDP | The main player connection port; this is the port normally included in a direct join address. |
| Server query | 27015 | UDP | Used by the server browser to discover and query the server. |
| Steam | 20560 | UDP | Additional Steam-related server traffic. |
| Web administration | 8080 | TCP | Remote web administration where the host has enabled it; it is not the normal player join port. |
An older dedicated-server guide for the original Killing Floor, not necessarily Killing Floor 2, lists 7707 for game traffic and 7708 for queries. Treat those values as legacy and check the server’s own configuration before forwarding them. Do not change a working server to legacy ports simply because they appear in an old guide.

How to join a friend’s private server
- Ask the host for the public WAN address, the game port, and the password.
- Confirm that the host has given you the game address, normally written as
IP:PORT, rather than a private LAN address. - Try the in-game browser if the server is advertised and visible.
- If it is not listed, add the address under Steam’s View > Game Servers > Favourites > Add a Server path and connect.
- If Steam does not connect, open the game console and run
open IP:PORT. - Supply the password at the prompt, or use the command syntax the host confirms if the console requires the password inline.
The host should remain in contact while you test. They can verify the exact address shown in their hosting panel, whether the server is running, and whether the password has changed.

Troubleshooting connection failures
The server is missing from the browser
- Wait approximately five to ten minutes if the server has just started.
- Remove restrictive filters such as game type or difficulty and refresh the list.
- Ask the host to confirm that the server is running and registered with the correct query port.
- Use the direct address through Steam favourites or the console instead of relying on discovery.
The direct address does not connect
- Check every character in
IP:PORT, including the colon and port number. - Verify that you were given the public WAN address. A private LAN address will not route to a friend outside the host’s network.
- Confirm that the host is using the game port configured for that server; 7777 UDP is the commonly documented default, but hosts can change settings.
- Ask whether the server has finished starting and whether its public address has changed.
The connection times out or is refused
Community hosting guidance commonly points to three server-side causes: missing router port forwarding, a host firewall or antivirus blocking the server, and possible ISP blocking. The host should check those items in that order, while ensuring the forwarding rule uses the server’s actual configured ports. A player cannot repair a missing inbound rule from the game client alone.
The password is rejected
- Confirm that you are connecting to the intended server and that the host has supplied the current password.
- Retype it carefully rather than relying on an old saved value.
- If using the console, ask the host which documented form their setup expects:
open IP:PORT?password=PASSWORDorOPEN IP:PORT;PASSWORD. - If the browser or Steam prompts separately, enter only the password, without adding command syntax.
The console command does nothing
Make sure the console is actually open and that the command starts with open. Include the port after the colon and press Enter. If the console remains unusable, return to Steam favourites, which provides a graphical direct-connect path.
Host-side checklist
If you are the server owner helping someone connect, verify these items before sending an address:
- The server process is running and has completed startup.
- The public WAN address and game port shown by the host panel are current.
- Router forwarding allows the configured game, query, and Steam UDP traffic where required.
- The host computer’s firewall and antivirus allow the server process.
- The password sent to players matches the server’s current setting.
- Players receive the public address, not a private LAN address.
Web administration on TCP 8080 is separate from player access. Opening that port does not replace forwarding the game port, and players should not be told to use it as their join address.
What is verified—and what is not
The three connection routes, the commonly documented port values, and the browser’s filtering workflow are supported by community, hosting, fan-wiki, and Steam discussion material. No Tripwire-hosted official support page was confirmed for these procedures. Menu labels differ between guides, and the retrieved pages do not establish which wording every current 2026 build uses. Password command notation also differs, so the host’s instructions and the client currently installed on your computer take precedence.
For most players, the practical order is straightforward: search the in-game browser, try Steam favourites with the supplied address, then use the console if a direct command is necessary. When none of those works, focus troubleshooting on the address, startup time, forwarding, firewall, and ISP path rather than repeatedly reinstalling the client.
