The Java projects commonly chosen for this look—Action & Better and Actions & Java—are client-side Fabric packs. You run a normal Minecraft: Java Edition server on the exact Minecraft version they support, while every player installs the matching pack in their own launcher. The server still needs the normal Java setup, EULA acceptance, configuration, and network access for friends outside your home.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
Because “Action & Stuff” is used informally for several Java recreations, identify the exact project and release before creating the server. Action & Better and Actions & Java have separate Minecraft and Fabric requirements. Treat the project page or launcher metadata for your selected release as the authority.

There is no single Java server package called Action & Stuff that defines one universal version or loader. The two projects covered here, Action & Better and Actions & Java, are separate recreations of the Bedrock-style presentation. Each has its own supported Minecraft releases and Fabric loader requirements.
Before downloading a server JAR, write down the following from the exact project release you selected:
#1 Best Overall
- The pack name and release number.
- The Minecraft version shown for that release.
- The required or recommended Fabric Loader version.
- Any optional client mods, resource packs, shaders, or visual settings included with the profile.
- Whether the distributed pack declares client-only or server-required dependencies.
Do not assume that a pack listed for one 1.21.x release works on every other 1.21.x release. A client profile and server must use the same Minecraft release unless the pack’s own metadata explicitly says otherwise. Keep a note of the versions so every player and the server administrator use the same combination.
Action & Better
Action & Better lists Fabric support and offers installation through the Modrinth App, Prism/MultiMC-style launchers, and a manual route. Its project description says it is completely client-side and has no server-side mod. That means the visual and animation files belong in each player’s client profile, not in the server’s mods folder.
Actions & Java
Actions & Java also lists Fabric and specific supported Minecraft versions. Its description identifies it as fully client-side and suitable for multiplayer. Use the release’s own version listing rather than copying the version chosen for Action & Better; the projects are not interchangeable just because their names and goals are similar.
Does the server need the pack installed?
For these researched projects, start with a matching official Java server and install the visual pack on each client. Multiplayer compatibility is part of their descriptions, and neither requires the full presentation pack to be present on the server.
That does not make every similarly named pack client-only. If you select another project, inspect its distributed metadata before launching a world. A Modrinth pack can declare separate client and server environments and can list Fabric as a dependency. A dependency marked required on the server must be installed there, even if the primary pack is visual. Conversely, a dependency marked client-only should remain on player machines.
How to check a distributed pack
- Open the pack’s project page or import its
.mrpackfile into your launcher. - Review the listed Minecraft version and Fabric Loader requirement.
- Inspect the dependency list and environment labels for every included mod.
- Look for wording such as “client-side,” “server-side,” “required on server,” or “optional.”
- Only add server-required files to the server. Keep client-only visuals, animations, and resource packs in each player’s profile.
If the metadata is unclear, do not guess. A server that contains an incompatible client-only mod can fail to start or reject connections, while omitting a genuinely server-required mod can produce missing-content errors.
Choose self-hosting or a managed server
Self-hosting gives you direct control over the Java runtime, server JAR, configuration, logs, world files, and updates. It also makes you responsible for the computer running the server, backups, firewall rules, router configuration, and troubleshooting.
A managed host can remove much of that administration. Before paying for one, confirm that it supports the exact Minecraft version, Fabric Loader version, custom JAR or mod uploads, and the pack’s server-side requirements. Also check how backups are scheduled, how long they are retained, whether restores are available from the control panel, and whether you can download your world. A host’s advertised support for “modpacks” is not proof that it supports your particular release.
| Consideration | Self-hosted Java server | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Setup work | Install Java, download the JAR, accept the EULA, edit properties, and configure firewall/router access. | The provider supplies the machine and usually a public endpoint; you still select and configure the server software. |
| Version control | You choose and update the exact server JAR. | The provider must expose the exact Minecraft and Fabric versions you need. |
| Pack files | You can inspect files locally; a client-only pack stays on player clients. | Confirm custom JAR, configuration, and upload policies before subscribing. |
| Backups | You must schedule, store, and test backups. | Check backup frequency, retention, download access, and restore controls. |
| Cost | Uses your hardware, electricity, storage, and administration time. | Requires a recurring fee; current prices depend on the provider and were not established here. |
| Troubleshooting | You have direct access to console output, logs, and files. | Support quality and restrictions on custom software determine how quickly issues can be resolved. |
Prepare the server computer
The official Java server workflow requires a compatible Java Runtime Environment. The server page is specifically for Minecraft: Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition. Install a JRE version compatible with the Minecraft server release and the Fabric components you selected. If Java is missing or incompatible, the JAR will not launch correctly.
Create a dedicated folder
Make a new folder used only for this server. Keeping the JAR, world, logs, configuration, and backups together makes updates and recovery safer. Avoid placing the server in a temporary downloads folder or inside a player’s client installation.

Download the matching server JAR
Download the official Minecraft Java server JAR for the same Minecraft version recorded from the Action & Better or Actions & Java release. Rename it only if you understand that your launch command must use the new filename. Do not substitute a different release because it has a similar version number.
Create the official Java server
The first launch generates the files needed for configuration. The standard sequence is:
- Place the downloaded server JAR in the dedicated server folder.
- Open a terminal or command prompt in that folder and run the JAR with your compatible Java runtime. A typical launch form is
java -jar server.jar nogui; replaceserver.jarwith the actual filename if it differs. - Allow the first run to create files such as
eula.txt,server.properties, the logs folder, and the world directory. The process may stop while it waits for EULA acceptance. - Open
eula.txt, changeeula=falsetoeula=true, and save the file only after reading the license terms. - Open
server.propertiesand review the world name, game mode, difficulty, player limit, message of the day, and listening port. - Run the same Java command again. Watch the console for a completed startup message before attempting to connect.
The official setup requires a compatible JRE and may require firewall or network configuration. Do not treat a successful first launch as proof that remote friends can connect; local startup and internet reachability are separate checks.
Configure only what you need
Change the world name, game mode, difficulty, player limit, MOTD, and port deliberately. Keep a copy of the original properties file before making substantial changes. Stop the server cleanly from its console before editing files that are in use. If you change the Minecraft version later, make a fresh backup first and confirm that the world and every required mod support the new release.
Install the pack on every player’s client
Each player needs a client profile that matches the server’s Minecraft version. The server does not distribute a client-only visual pack automatically.

Using a supported launcher
- Install the launcher you intend to use, such as the Modrinth App or a Prism/MultiMC-style launcher.
- Import or install the exact Action & Better or Actions & Java release.
- Allow the launcher to install the listed Fabric Loader version and dependencies.
- Check that the profile’s Minecraft version is identical to the server JAR’s version.
- Launch the profile once in single-player or at the title screen to confirm that Fabric starts without a missing-dependency error.
Manual installation
If the project supplies a manual route, follow its file placement instructions exactly. A manual profile normally requires the same Minecraft version, Fabric Loader, and client-side files that the launcher would have installed. Do not copy the entire client profile into the server folder simply because the files are available locally.
Connect to the server
- Launch the matching Fabric profile.
- Open Multiplayer and choose Add Server.
- Enter a recognizable server name and the address supplied by the host.
- Save the entry and connect after the server console reports that startup is complete.
Players who join without the visual pack may still be able to connect when the pack is client-only, but they will not see the intended animations, textures, or presentation. If a project lists a required client dependency, every player must install it.
Let friends outside your home network join
A server running on your computer is reachable automatically only from networks that can route to it. Players on the same home network can usually connect using the host computer’s local address. Friends elsewhere need a publicly reachable endpoint, and the official Minecraft guidance calls out firewall and router configuration, including port forwarding where applicable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLocal-network test
- Start the server and wait for its completed startup message.
- Allow Java or the server application through the computer’s firewall when prompted, using the network profile appropriate for your home network.
- From another device on the same home network, connect using the host computer’s local address.
- If the local test fails, fix the server, Java, or firewall first; router port forwarding cannot repair a server that is not listening locally.
Remote-access configuration
- Determine the listening port shown in
server.properties. - Create a router port-forwarding rule for that port to the host computer’s local address, if your internet connection and router require it.
- Permit the same traffic through the host computer’s firewall.
- Test from a network outside your home, such as a phone’s mobile connection, rather than relying only on a second device connected to the same router.
- Give the reachable address only to trusted players. Do not publish it in a public post.
Some internet services use carrier-grade NAT or otherwise block inbound connections. In that case, ordinary port forwarding may not work. A managed host or another access method that you trust may be necessary; verify its Minecraft and Fabric compatibility before moving the world.

Freeze a known-good profile
Record the Minecraft release, Fabric Loader version, pack release, and any additional mods in a simple text file beside your server notes. Ask friends to use the same client profile rather than independently updating. When a new pack release appears, test it separately instead of replacing a working profile immediately.

Back up before changes
Stop the server cleanly, copy the world folder and configuration files to storage separate from the live server, and label the backup with the Minecraft and pack versions. A backup that has never been restored is not yet a verified recovery plan, so periodically test opening a copy of the world.
Update in a controlled order
- Read the new pack release notes and dependency list.
- Confirm that a matching official server JAR exists for the new Minecraft version.
- Back up the current world and server files.
- Test the new client profile and server in a separate folder.
- Move players to the new profile only after the test world loads and a connection succeeds.
Never open the only copy of an established world in a new release without a backup. World conversion can be one-way.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The JAR does nothing or closes immediately
- Verify that a compatible Java Runtime Environment is installed and available in the terminal.
- Confirm that the command names the actual JAR filename and is being run from the server folder.
- Read the console or log output for a Java-version or permission error.
- Run the first launch again after correcting the issue, then complete the EULA step.
The server says the EULA is not accepted
Stop the process, open eula.txt, change only the setting from eula=false to eula=true, save it, and start the server again. If the file keeps reverting, check that you are editing the copy in the folder used by the launch command and that the account running Java can write there.
A player receives a version or loader mismatch
Compare the player’s Minecraft version and Fabric Loader version with the server and the selected pack release. Reinstall or repair the launcher profile rather than mixing files from two pack versions. Remove any extra mod that the pack does not list, then test again.
The server starts but a client cannot connect
- Check whether the server is fully started rather than still generating a world.
- For a local player, use the host’s local address and verify the firewall.
- For a remote player, verify the public address, router forwarding rule, and firewall rule.
- Confirm that the server is listening on the port shown in
server.properties. - Read the server log for a rejected connection, missing dependency, or incompatible protocol message.
The client connects but the visuals are missing
That usually means the client profile is incomplete, not that the server needs the visual pack. Check that the player launched the Action & Better or Actions & Java profile, that its optional resource packs are enabled, and that the Minecraft and Fabric versions match the selected release.
The server refuses a mod
Inspect the pack metadata and the mod’s declared environment. A client-only mod should not be placed in the server’s mods folder. A dependency marked required on the server must be installed with the correct loader and Minecraft version. If the project’s metadata is ambiguous, remove the unverified addition and use the pack’s documented configuration before trying another combination.

What a correct setup looks like
A working installation has a dedicated folder containing the matching official Java server JAR, generated configuration, an accepted EULA, and a world. The server runs the same Minecraft release named by the selected pack. Every player launches a Fabric profile for that release with the client-side Action & Better or Actions & Java files installed. Local players use a reachable local address; remote friends use a tested public route after firewall and router configuration.
The important boundary is simple: the server provides the shared Minecraft world and any dependencies explicitly marked server-required, while each client provides the visual and animation experience. Keep that boundary intact, verify versions before every update, and maintain a tested backup before changing the server.
