How to Investigate Suspicious RMM Activity on an Endpoint

Investigate suspicious RMM activity by validating authorization, reconstructing the session timeline, correlating endpoint and network records, and preserving evidence before cleanup.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Determine whether the remote monitoring and management (RMM) tool, endpoint, account, session, timing, and connection route were authorized. Then reconstruct what happened from endpoint, authentication, RMM-console, and network records; preserve relevant evidence; and contain confirmed unauthorized access through your incident-response process. An RMM tool’s presence alone does not prove compromise.

Start with authorization and context

RMM software is dual-use: organizations rely on it for remote support and administration, while attackers can use the same capabilities for interactive control, persistence, and command and control. MITRE ATT&CK classifies remote desktop software as sub-technique T1219.002 and lists tools such as VNC, TeamViewer, AnyDesk, ScreenConnect, LogMeIn, and AmmyyAdmin. A familiar product name is not proof of legitimate use, and an unfamiliar one is not proof of an intrusion. MITRE ATT&CK T1219.002

Before judging an alert, identify what your organization has approved. Compare the tool and endpoint with the remote-access inventory, the accountable owner and business purpose, expected deployment method, authorized accounts, support ticket or request, normal support window, and approved VPN or virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) route. CISA, NSA, and MS-ISAC recommend auditing authorized RMM software and requiring approved solutions to use approved access paths. Joint CISA/NSA/MS-ISAC advisory

Signals to investigate—and what to check

These observations are leads for correlation, not standalone indicators of compromise. Check the qualification in the third column before treating a signal as suspicious.

Observation Why it merits investigation Context to verify
RMM software is absent from the approved inventory It may represent unauthorized software or an unapproved support path. Confirm with the endpoint owner and IT support records.
A portable RMM executable or an instance loaded only in memory The joint advisory specifically calls for reviewing portable execution and detecting RMM loaded only in memory. Compare with the expected deployment method for that product.
Execution is followed by outbound beaconing or a remote session MITRE describes this sequence in its detection strategy for remote desktop software. Correlate destination, account activity, and available RMM console records.
An unexpected login or system modification occurs during or after a remote session MITRE identifies these as context for suspicious remote sessions. Check whether the session was approved and whether the change fits its support purpose.
PowerShell deployment or multiple remote-access mechanisms appear in the same timeline The joint guide describes threat actors deploying agents through PowerShell and using multiple remote-access mechanisms. Expand the investigation when process lineage or timeline evidence connects these events.

Investigate in a time-ordered workflow

1. Capture the alert and preserve its context

Record the endpoint identifier, user or account, detection time and timezone, RMM product or binary name, file path, hash if available, process lineage, command line, service or scheduled start mechanism, network destinations, and alert source. Preserve the alert and relevant telemetry before removing software or cleaning up the host. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide recommends collecting relevant logs, precursor malware samples, and associated observables, and securing host, network, and cloud logs.

2. Verify whether the tool and session were authorized

Match the observed product and endpoint to the approved inventory, then check the named owner, business purpose, expected deployment, account, support request, time window, and connection route. Validate discrepancies with the endpoint owner and support team; do not rely on a product name or signature alone. Legitimate support software may be allowed by application control in a target environment, but that does not establish that a particular session was authorized. MITRE ATT&CK T1219.002

  • There are 2 inside reserved fans on chassis, which could be removed freely or be turned on in a high temperature environment to ensure the best function of the product

3. Reconstruct execution and access

Build a timeline that connects installation or launch to process ancestry, account logons, RMM sessions, privilege changes, system modifications, and network connections. Establish what ran first, under which identity, and what followed. If evidence links the RMM deployment to another process, account, or remote-access mechanism, widen the scope to those leads rather than treating the agent as an isolated event. The CISA/NSA/FBI/MS-ISAC Guide to Securing Remote Access Software describes threat actors deploying agents through PowerShell and using multiple remote-access mechanisms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Correlate endpoint, identity, console, and network records

Review the endpoint’s process and security telemetry alongside available authentication, firewall, proxy, DNS, VPN/VDI, and RMM service or console records. Search other hosts for the same account, binary, destination, or session pattern. Centralized log management can help correlate activity and assess impact across host, network-device, and cloud-service records, as recommended in CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide.

5. Establish impact and coordinate containment

If evidence supports unauthorized access, identify affected accounts and endpoints, connected systems, follow-on tools, and signs of data access or staging. Preserve relevant logs and samples, then apply containment under your organization’s incident-response authority and business-impact process. The appropriate isolation action depends on the incident and operational context; do not treat a generic checklist as a substitute for that decision.

Consider whether the RMM product itself is exposed

RMM activity may be suspicious because a legitimate tool was misused, but the remote-access product can also be an attack surface. CISA’s Play ransomware advisory reported exploitation of SimpleHelp vulnerability CVE-2024-57727 after its disclosure on January 16, 2025. This is an example of product risk, not evidence that SimpleHelp—or that vulnerability—is involved in a particular endpoint alert. CISA advisory on Play ransomware

  • Integrated with a Raspberry Pi 4 module (8GB RAM and 64GB Micro SD Card)
  • Can be used as a standalone 100M/1G network TAP with the external monitor port

Use findings to reduce repeat risk

After the investigation, review whether approved RMM use is constrained to known tools and routes. CISA, NSA, and MS-ISAC recommend application controls for authorized RMM, approved access paths, and network restrictions; MITRE lists execution prevention and filtering remote-access traffic among mitigations. These organizational controls reduce opportunities for unauthorized use but do not replace investigating an active alert. Joint advisory · MITRE ATT&CK T1219.002

What a general checklist cannot tell you

This workflow is vendor- and operating-system-neutral. The alert’s product and platform determine which event IDs, artifact paths, registry locations, console fields, and response commands apply; there is no universal threshold in the cited guidance that makes one RMM event malicious.
