There is no single verified fix for every report of high CPU, memory pressure, disk activity, or slow applications on a device running CrowdStrike Falcon Sensor. Start by measuring the specific symptom, recording the host and sensor versions, and comparing the affected device with a similar unaffected one. Then check whether the timing points to a workload, update, policy, or configuration change. Make no broad protection or exclusion changes without a demonstrated cause and current guidance for the affected platform and sensor release.
What to establish before changing Falcon
A report that “Falcon is slowing down the computer” is a starting point, not a diagnosis. The slowdown may be limited to one application or workload, may appear only during a particular period, or may coincide with an operating-system, software, policy, or sensor change. A repeatable investigation keeps those possibilities open until evidence distinguishes them.

Record the symptom as an observable effect: for example, elevated CPU or memory use, disk activity, application latency, or battery impact. Note when it began, how long it lasts, what the user was doing, whether the host was idle or busy, and which process or workload was involved if known. Preserve an initial measurement before changing policy or sensor settings.
There is no public universal CPU or memory threshold, performance benchmark, or version-by-version issue matrix established by the CrowdStrike material cited here. Do not label an observation as abnormal solely by applying an invented threshold. Use the organization’s usual endpoint monitoring and incident process, and compare like with like.

Turn a vague complaint into a testable statement
Ask the reporter to describe exactly what changed from normal operation. “The laptop is slow” could mean an application takes longer to open, a build job misses its expected completion time, interactive input lags, a fan runs continuously, or the endpoint becomes unresponsive. Each observation suggests a different measurement and time window.
- CPU: identify whether the observation is a brief spike, sustained utilization, or contention with a named application.
- Memory: record pressure, paging or swapping observations, and whether the effect persists after the workload ends.
- Disk or file activity: note the paths, job, backup, scan, build, or database operation occurring at the time, without exposing sensitive data in an external case.
- Latency: record the affected application, transaction, endpoint interaction, and elapsed time rather than describing it only as “slow.”
- Battery or heat: note whether the host was on battery, connected to power, idle, or performing a known intensive task.
Capture the user’s timezone and the endpoint’s timezone when timestamps will be compared with tenant events or support logs. Keep the original observation even if it is incomplete; later changes should not overwrite the baseline.
Build a useful comparison
Whenever possible, compare an affected endpoint with an unaffected endpoint that has a similar role and workload. A comparison is more useful when the devices were measured over the same time window and under comparable load. If several hosts are affected, look for a common platform, sensor release, policy assignment, workload, or recent change rather than assuming that every case has the same cause.

| What to compare | What to record |
|---|---|
| Device and platform | Approved host identifier, operating system and exact release, architecture, and kernel release where applicable. |
| Falcon installation | Installed sensor version, when the issue began, and the applicable update or policy assignment if known. |
| Observed impact | Metric or user-visible effect, timestamps and duration, workload or process context, and whether the device was idle or busy. |
| Recent changes | Sensor, operating-system or kernel update; application or workload change; policy change; or other relevant host or infrastructure change. |
| Control device | The same details for a similar unaffected endpoint, measured under comparable conditions. |
Keep measurements tied to their time window and conditions. A single snapshot can miss a short spike or obscure whether the symptom appears only during a particular job. The public CrowdStrike sources cited below do not prescribe profiler commands or measurement thresholds, so use tools and procedures approved for your environment rather than treating an installer diagnostic as a performance trace.
Use a comparison matrix for multiple hosts
For a fleet-wide report, make one row per endpoint and columns for platform, exact OS or kernel, sensor version, policy assignment, workload, issue start time, and observed impact. Sort the rows by the first common difference. A pattern confined to one kernel release is a different lead from a pattern confined to one application or one sensor ring. Affected and unaffected devices that share all recorded attributes may require tenant-side or product-side review rather than another local configuration experiment.
Do not treat correlation as proof. If every affected host received a sensor update on the same day, verify whether unaffected hosts received it too, whether the workload changed simultaneously, and whether the symptom reproduces outside that workload. Record competing explanations instead of prematurely naming Falcon as the cause.
Collect platform and sensor context safely
CrowdStrike’s official deployment scripts have documented debug modes that can provide installer and environment context. They are useful when establishing what platform and sensor installation details are present; they do not profile CPU or memory usage or prove that the sensor caused a slowdown. Review any collected output under your organization’s rules, and redact sensitive host details before sharing outside approved channels.

Linux
The documented Linux install-script debug example is FALCON_DEBUG=1 ./falcon-linux-install.sh. CrowdStrike says the redacted output can include operating system, architecture, kernel, package manager, installer selection and integrity details, API request outcomes, sensor version, and AID. Use the script and process appropriate to your environment; the example is not a command to reinstall or alter a production endpoint as part of performance triage.

Those fields help answer whether two hosts truly have the same platform and installation context. They can also reveal that an apparently identical group uses different architectures, kernels, package managers, installer paths, or sensor versions. They do not show how much CPU a Falcon process consumed during a user complaint, nor do they establish a causal relationship with a workload.
See CrowdStrike’s Linux install and uninstall script troubleshooting documentation for the debug mode and its scope. Do not substitute indiscriminate shell tracing: CrowdStrike’s Linux container-pull guidance warns that bash -x can expose credentials and authorization headers. Use the documented redacted diagnostics rather than casually printing command execution details.
Windows
The Windows PowerShell deployment script documents the -FalconDebug switch. Its redacted output can include the operating-system and PowerShell versions, sensor query and installer choice, API call status, installed version, and AID. The documentation notes that the version is resolved from policy or query rather than re-read from the binary. That distinction matters: treat the output as deployment-script context, not as an independent binary inspection or performance measurement.
See CrowdStrike’s Windows PowerShell install and uninstall script troubleshooting documentation. Use the script according to its current instructions and your organization’s change controls. The debug switch is not a reason to rerun an installer on an affected production machine without an operational need. If the endpoint is business-critical, collect the least disruptive context first and schedule any deployment action through the normal maintenance process.
macOS
The cited CrowdStrike configuration role covers macOS as well as Linux, but the cited deployment-script material does not establish a macOS equivalent to the Linux FALCON_DEBUG=1 or Windows -FalconDebug examples. Collect macOS version, sensor version, symptom timing, workload, policy context, and recent changes through approved administrative procedures, then consult current authenticated documentation for the specific release.
Do not copy a Linux or Windows command to macOS simply because the product name is the same. Platform permissions, service controls, logging locations, and configuration options can differ. Verify each procedure for the installed macOS sensor release before using it.
Keep diagnostic output in scope
Installer logs answer questions about deployment and environment, not whether a sensor process caused a resource spike. They can still help an administrator or support team align the report with an OS, kernel, architecture, installer path, or sensor version. Follow internal rules for AIDs and host identifiers; use approved secure channels when a vendor case requires identifiable endpoint details. CrowdStrike also provides an overview of its deployment scripts at the deployment scripts documentation.

Correlate the symptom with workload, versions, and configuration
Once the symptom and host context are recorded, compare the issue’s start time with changes that could plausibly be related. Check whether the issue follows a particular workload or application, appears on one operating system or kernel release, or is limited to hosts with a particular sensor version or policy assignment. Also check for recent application, operating-system, kernel, sensor, infrastructure, or policy changes. Correlation narrows the investigation; it does not by itself establish causation.
Ask whether the same workload produces the same effect on an unaffected endpoint. Conversely, if the affected endpoint becomes slow only during one job, determine whether that job changed recently. A policy assignment can also differ indirectly through update rings or host groups, so record the actual assignment rather than relying on a team label.
Falcon settings are not interchangeable across operating systems. CrowdStrike’s Ansible falcon_configure role covers Linux and macOS and supports Windows with fewer options. Its documentation includes Linux-specific falconctl controls such as trace and message logging. The existence of a control does not establish that enabling it is safe, appropriate, or effective for a performance complaint. Confirm that a proposed setting applies to the affected OS and installed release, and check its current usage and impact guidance before changing it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Trace or message logging may increase diagnostic detail, but the public material does not define a universal performance impact, duration, or safe setting for every release. Treat such controls as a documented, authorized diagnostic change: record who approved it, when it started, what was measured, and when it was reverted.
Consult CrowdStrike’s Ansible falcon_configure documentation for the role’s platform-specific configuration scope. Do not use an option simply because it sounds diagnostic; verify its purpose and the consequences for the particular deployment.
Distinguish installation from configuration
For Linux and macOS Ansible deployments, CrowdStrike states that installing the sensor alone is not sufficient for a fully operational deployment and directs administrators to run the configuration role after installation. This is a relevant check when investigating incomplete or inconsistent setup. It is not evidence that incomplete configuration causes high CPU use.
Confirm whether the configuration role actually ran, whether it targeted the intended host group, and whether the resulting settings match a comparable endpoint. An installation that succeeded while configuration was skipped can explain inconsistent management state, but only measurements and vendor guidance can connect that state to a performance symptom.
Recommended Free Tools
See CrowdStrike’s Ansible falcon_install documentation and follow its direction to configure the deployment as appropriate. Do not infer from an installation/configuration discrepancy that it explains a performance symptom without evidence connecting the two.

Do not use exclusions as a default performance fix
Exclusions alter security coverage; they are not a general-purpose performance remedy established by the cited sources. CrowdStrike documents multiple exclusion classes, including IOA, machine learning, sensor visibility, and certificate-based exclusions. The documentation describes exclusion types and management operations, not a default instruction to add exclusions when a user reports a slowdown.
Each exclusion class has a different security purpose. An IOA exclusion, machine-learning exclusion, sensor-visibility exclusion, and certificate-based exclusion should not be treated as interchangeable switches. Determine which control is being proposed, what protection it changes, which hosts and paths it covers, and who owns the approval.
Do not disable protection or add a broad exclusion merely to see whether the symptom changes. If a controlled test is approved by your organization and supported by current CrowdStrike guidance, define the test scope, authorization, measurement method, and rollback plan in advance. Compare the same workload and symptom before and after, and restore the intended protection configuration when the test ends. See CrowdStrike’s exclusions documentation for the documented exclusion classes and management context.
A negative test is also evidence: if a narrowly scoped, authorized change does not alter the measured symptom, remove it and pursue another hypothesis. Do not leave an exclusion in place simply because it was added during troubleshooting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a decision path that preserves evidence
- Define the complaint. Identify whether the reported issue is CPU, memory, disk activity, latency, battery impact, or an application slowdown. Record its start time, duration, workload, user-visible effect, and available measurements.
- Preserve the baseline. Save the initial observation before changing a policy, exclusion, sensor setting, or workload. Record the time window and conditions so later measurements can be compared fairly.
- Identify the endpoint precisely. Record OS and exact version, architecture, kernel where relevant, Falcon Sensor version, and the issue start time. Use the applicable official deployment-script debug mode only when it fits the operational situation; its output is context, not profiling.
- Find a comparable control. Compare an unaffected device of similar role and workload, ideally measured over the same interval. Note differences in platform, sensor version, policy, workload, and recent changes.
- Test a specific hypothesis. If the timing aligns with a workload, release, policy, or configuration difference, investigate that relationship using approved procedures. Change one relevant factor at a time where practical, document authorization and rollback, and measure the same symptom under comparable conditions.
- Check platform-specific guidance. Verify every proposed Falcon setting against current documentation for the exact operating system and sensor release. Do not assume a Linux control applies to macOS or Windows, or that a setting documented for one release is appropriate for another.
- Escalate when evidence does not isolate a cause. Use your organization’s CrowdStrike support channel when symptoms persist, span hosts, or appear tied to the product and cannot be explained locally. Share redacted diagnostic output and the collected comparison facts through approved secure channels.
Prepare an evidence packet for escalation
A focused support report makes it easier to distinguish a host-specific workload issue from a platform, version, or configuration pattern. Include facts rather than conclusions: report the observed symptom and conditions, then state what comparisons and changes were checked.
- Affected host identifiers through approved secure channels, plus the number and roles of affected endpoints.
- Operating system and exact OS or kernel release, architecture where relevant, and Falcon Sensor version.
- The symptom metric or user-visible effect, timestamps, duration, workload or process context, and whether the device was idle or busy.
- Results from comparable unaffected hosts, including any differences in platform, sensor version, policy, workload, or timing.
- Relevant recent sensor, OS/kernel, application, workload, policy, or infrastructure changes.
- Applicable redacted deployment-script diagnostics and any configuration context that helps identify the affected setup.
- Changes already attempted, their authorization and scope, and before-and-after observations.
State what remains unknown. For example, say that the issue reproduces only during a named workload, that no comparable control was available, or that an exclusion test was not authorized. This prevents a support analyst from treating an assumption as an established fact.
The public documentation cited here does not provide an authoritative support checklist, response-time commitment, or version-specific performance issue matrix. Use the current authenticated Falcon documentation and your organization’s support route for guidance specific to the tenant, platform, policy, and sensor release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat CrowdStrike’s performance claim does—and does not—mean
CrowdStrike’s product datasheet search result includes the sentence “Minimal CPU overhead restores systemperformance and end-user productivity.” Treat that as vendor marketing language, not as an independent test result. The result supplies no numeric performance figure or test conditions, and the concatenated wording “systemperformance” should be checked against the underlying datasheet before quoting it directly.
Best Value
That statement cannot replace endpoint measurements, a control-device comparison, or version-specific support advice. No named performance statistic with a figure, original publishing organization, year, and applicable test conditions was established in the official material reviewed for this topic. Avoid inserting a percentage or claiming that a particular sensor release has a guaranteed overhead.
Common investigation mistakes
- Changing several variables at once: a policy edit, exclusion, sensor update, and workload change made together cannot show which change mattered.
- Comparing unlike systems: a developer workstation and an idle server are not valid controls merely because both run Falcon.
- Using installer output as a profiler: debug logs establish deployment context, not resource consumption.
- Enabling shell tracing casually:
bash -xcan expose credentials and authorization headers. - Assuming a setting is portable: Linux
falconctlcontrols and Ansible options may not apply to Windows or macOS. - Leaving a test exclusion behind: a temporary diagnostic exception can become permanent loss of coverage unless it has an owner and expiry.
- Overstating causation: temporal correlation with an update is a lead for investigation, not proof that the update caused the symptom.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is CrowdStrike Falcon using so much CPU?
High CPU can correlate with a workload, application, operating-system or kernel release, sensor version, policy, or recent change. Record the process, workload, time window, and sensor context, then compare an affected endpoint with a similar unaffected one. The public material does not establish a universal CPU threshold or a single cause.
How do I troubleshoot Falcon Sensor high memory, disk, or battery use?
Define the exact metric and user-visible effect, preserve a baseline, and record whether the device was idle or busy. Compare the same workload and interval on a comparable endpoint. Use deployment-script debug output only for OS, installer, sensor, and environment context; it is not a memory, disk, or battery profiler.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Does CrowdStrike provide a Linux diagnostic command?
The Linux install script documents the redacted debug example FALCON_DEBUG=1 ./falcon-linux-install.sh. It can report OS, architecture, kernel, package manager, installer details, API outcomes, sensor version, and AID. It does not prove a performance cause.
What is the Windows equivalent of Falcon debug mode?
The Windows PowerShell install script documents the -FalconDebug switch. Its redacted output can include OS and PowerShell versions, sensor query and installer choice, API status, installed version, and AID. It is deployment context, not a performance trace.
Should I add a Falcon exclusion to fix a slowdown?
Not by default. Exclusions change security coverage, and CrowdStrike documents IOA, machine-learning, sensor-visibility, and certificate-based classes without presenting them as a general performance fix. Use an exclusion only for a demonstrated cause, with authorization, narrow scope, measurement, rollback, and current vendor guidance.
Are Falcon configuration options the same on Windows, Linux, and macOS?
No. CrowdStrike’s Ansible configuration role covers Linux and macOS and supports Windows with fewer options; Linux-specific falconctl controls include trace and message logging. Verify every option against the affected operating system and exact sensor release.
Can incomplete Ansible configuration explain high CPU?
CrowdStrike says installation alone is insufficient for a fully operational Linux or macOS Ansible deployment and directs administrators to run the configuration role. That identifies a deployment consistency check, not proof that incomplete configuration causes high CPU. Measure and escalate rather than assuming causation.
When should I contact CrowdStrike support?
Escalate when the symptom persists, affects multiple hosts, appears tied to a product or release, or cannot be isolated by local comparison. Provide approved host identifiers, OS and kernel, sensor version, timestamps, workload, measurements, comparison results, recent changes, policy context, and redacted diagnostics.
The Bottom Line
Investigate Falcon performance complaints as an evidence problem: define the symptom, preserve a baseline, compare like endpoints, and correlate timing with workloads, versions, policies, and configuration. CrowdStrike’s Linux and Windows debug modes supply redacted deployment context, not performance profiling. Keep settings platform-specific, do not use broad exclusions as experiments, and escalate with precise, redacted facts when the evidence does not identify a safe local fix.
