The capture endpoint, authentication, and screenshot parameters depend on the provider; n8n supplies the workflow and binary-file handling.
How the n8n screenshot workflow works
n8n’s HTTP Request node can call a REST API and put its response in a selected output field as a file. A typical flow is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Receive a website URL, either from a Webhook trigger or an earlier workflow step.
- Use HTTP Request to call the screenshot provider’s endpoint, with the provider’s required authentication and capture options.
- Configure the response format as File and choose the output field that will hold the image.
- Return the binary file to the caller, or continue the workflow to store or process it.
n8n describes HTTP Request as a way to make requests to services with REST APIs, making it a general integration point for screenshot services. See the n8n HTTP Request documentation.
Build the workflow with HTTP Request
1. Choose how the workflow receives a URL
For an externally triggered capture, add a Webhook node and accept the URL and any options your workflow intends to expose. Validate the URL before sending it to the capture service, and avoid accepting arbitrary headers or credentials from untrusted callers. If another workflow already has the URL, you can start from that data instead.

2. Configure the screenshot API request
Add an HTTP Request node and enter the screenshot provider’s documented endpoint and method. Configure authentication using an n8n predefined credential type if one is available; otherwise use a generic credential or the authentication method the provider documents. Set headers, query parameters, or a request body exactly as required by that API.
There is no universal screenshot request schema. Image format, full-page capture, viewport dimensions, and other options have provider-specific names and requirements. Check the provider’s current API documentation rather than assuming that an example request for one service works with another.
3. Treat the response as a file
In the HTTP Request node, set the response format to File and select an output field for the downloaded screenshot. This is important: an image response is binary data, not a JSON object to parse as text. Use the same field name in any later node that consumes the screenshot.
Browserless documents a screenshot API that can serve as one example of an external capture endpoint; its endpoint details belong to its own Screenshot API documentation. This is an example, not a claim that it is the only compatible provider.
Return the screenshot from an n8n webhook
To send the captured image directly to the caller, configure the Webhook trigger to respond using a Respond to Webhook node. Place that node after HTTP Request and set its response type to Binary File, pointing it to the output field containing the screenshot. The node also allows you to set response codes and headers. See the Respond to Webhook documentation.
Callers should handle the response as an image or downloaded file, not assume it is JSON. If you want to return a JSON status alongside the image, design that response deliberately: a single HTTP response cannot be both an ordinary JSON document and a standalone binary image. One alternative is to return a link or an execution identifier in JSON and provide the image through a separate route or later retrieval step.
Save screenshots for later
If the workflow needs to retain screenshots, add the appropriate storage step after capture and make the retention policy explicit. Returning a file in a webhook response is transient delivery; it should not be mistaken for durable storage.
n8n documents external storage for execution binary data using AWS S3. The feature is available for self-hosted Enterprise plans; n8n Cloud Enterprise users should contact n8n. Other S3-compatible services may work, but n8n does not officially support them. For S3 storage, configure a bucket lifecycle rule unless you intend to retain binary data indefinitely. Check the current external binary storage documentation and your deployment plan before relying on this feature. This concerns n8n execution binary data; it is not the only way to upload a file to object storage.

Choose a capture approach
A managed screenshot API lets n8n delegate browser capture rather than requiring you to operate the browser runtime. Compare services on the criteria that matter to your workflow:
- Authentication model and how secrets are stored in n8n.
- Capture controls and supported output formats.
- Service limits, reliability, region, privacy posture, and current pricing.
- How the API reports failed captures and whether the workflow can distinguish them from valid images.
A self-operated browser can give you more control over the browser runtime and network access, but you must deploy and maintain that infrastructure yourself. The workflow pattern below does not require a particular provider.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API with a direct GET endpoint. In n8n, configure HTTP Request to call the endpoint, pass your API key and target URL as query parameters, and handle the response as a file. Its API also accepts parameter names used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching easier. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the current options.

The result is JSON or text instead of an image
Check that the HTTP Request response format is File and that the screenshot is assigned to the intended output field. Confirm the provider is returning an image for this request rather than an error payload.

Verify the endpoint, HTTP method, authentication, parameter names, and required headers against the provider’s documentation. Screenshot APIs do not share a universal schema, so a valid request for another service may still be rejected.

The webhook does not return the captured file
Confirm that the Webhook trigger is set to respond using Respond to Webhook, that the response node runs after HTTP Request, and that its response type is Binary File with the correct output field selected.
Binary data is missing in a later execution
Check how the workflow passes binary data between nodes and whether the chosen storage arrangement retains execution data for the period you need. For n8n’s documented external S3 binary storage, verify plan eligibility and configure bucket lifecycle behavior intentionally.
Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
Screenshot capture depends on both the target website and the provider’s browser service. Account for slow or failed page loads in the workflow: decide whether to retry, report an error to the caller, or continue with another branch. Do not treat every successful HTTP response as proof that the page rendered correctly; check the provider’s response behavior and error indicators.

If callers can submit URLs, consider whether your workflow could be used to request internal or otherwise sensitive addresses, and restrict inputs accordingly. No universal latency, success rate, provider pricing, or capture limit applies to this integration pattern.
FAQ
Can n8n return a screenshot from a webhook?
Yes. Use Respond to Webhook after the capture request and select Binary File for the response.
Does n8n take the screenshot itself?
The workflow described here calls an external screenshot API for browser capture; n8n handles the request and the resulting file.
Can I return an HTML preview instead of an image?
n8n introduced automatic iframe wrapping for HTML webhook responses in version 1.103.0. Its documentation says the HTML runs in a sandboxed iframe: scripts cannot access the top-level window or local storage, authentication headers are unavailable there, and relative URLs do not work.
