Attach a callback to wp_enqueue_scripts, load Bootstrap’s CSS first, load your theme stylesheet after it, and enqueue Bootstrap’s JavaScript bundle with a version and footer placement. The bundle contains Popper, which is required by components such as dropdowns, popovers, and tooltips.

The example below uses the version-pinned Bootstrap 5.0.2 CDN files shown in Bootstrap’s v5.0 documentation. Keep the version in the URL and enqueue call synchronized, and change both deliberately when your project adopts another supported release.

What the integration actually changes
Bootstrap is a front-end framework: its compiled CSS supplies layout, typography, spacing, responsive utilities, forms, tables, and component styles, while its JavaScript enables interactive components. WordPress does not automatically understand Bootstrap’s files or classes. Your theme must register those assets with WordPress’s enqueue system and then use Bootstrap’s markup in the templates.
Enqueueing gives WordPress an explicit dependency graph. WordPress can place styles and scripts in the right locations, avoid loading the same handle twice, and let plugins or child themes adjust the queue. The front-end hook for this work is wp_enqueue_scripts; the callback normally lives in the active theme’s functions.php. WordPress documents wp_enqueue_style() as its primary stylesheet function and wp_enqueue_script() as the recommended way to link scripts to a generated page.

Decide where the code belongs
Use a child theme when extending a parent
If the site is built on a parent theme that you expect to update, put the Bootstrap enqueue callback, custom CSS, and template overrides in a child theme. Updating the parent can replace its files; a child theme keeps your integration separate. This is an engineering practice based on WordPress’s theme asset model rather than a special Bootstrap requirement.
Activate the child theme before testing. In a child theme, get_stylesheet_uri() points to the child stylesheet, which is normally the correct file for rules that override Bootstrap or the parent theme. Keep the callback in the child theme’s functions.php, and do not copy the parent theme’s entire functions file into the child.
When a standalone theme is appropriate
If you own and maintain the theme itself, add the callback to that theme’s functions.php. The same enqueue pattern applies. A custom theme stylesheet should depend on the Bootstrap handle so WordPress prints it afterward.
Choose CDN delivery or local files
Bootstrap’s distribution includes compiled CSS and JavaScript, source Sass, and source JavaScript. That gives you three practical delivery choices: a CDN for a quick integration, downloaded compiled files stored in the theme, or a build pipeline that compiles and bundles the source.

For a small theme or a proof of concept, the pinned CDN example is straightforward. For a site with strict external-request policies or a controlled release pipeline, local delivery is easier to govern. Whichever route you choose, record the Bootstrap release and update the URL, local files, and enqueue version together.

Enqueue Bootstrap in functions.php
Add this callback to the active theme or child theme’s functions.php. The handles are prefixed with mytheme to reduce collisions with plugins and other themes.

- Unique handles:
mytheme-bootstrap,mytheme-style, andmytheme-bootstrap-bundleidentify the assets inside WordPress. Replacemythemewith a stable prefix for your theme. - Bootstrap CSS:
wp_enqueue_style()loads the minified stylesheet. The empty dependency array means it does not need another stylesheet first. - Theme CSS: The dependency array contains
mytheme-bootstrap, so WordPress places your stylesheet after Bootstrap. That ordering lets intentional theme rules override framework defaults without editing Bootstrap. - Version values: The Bootstrap style and script both use
5.0.2. The version is emitted in the asset URL and helps browsers and intermediary caches recognize a changed file. The theme stylesheet uses the version declared in the active theme’s metadata. - JavaScript bundle: The URL ends in
bootstrap.bundle.min.js. Bootstrap’s bundle includes Popper, which components needing positioning use for dropdowns, popovers, and tooltips. - Footer loading: The final argument
trueasks WordPress to print the script in the footer area, after the page content has been parsed. It does not replace correct dependency declarations. - Hook:
add_action('wp_enqueue_scripts', ...)runs the callback at the proper front-end enqueue stage. The code therefore participates in WordPress’s normal asset queue instead of bypassing it.
Do not paste the CDN tags directly into header.php, footer.php, or a template part when the enqueue API can express the same relationship. Direct tags make ordering, duplicate detection, and later theme changes harder to manage.
Use Bootstrap classes in theme templates
After the assets are queued, add Bootstrap’s documented class names to your markup. For example, a responsive container and row can be written as:

</main>Bootstrap only styles elements whose classes are present in the rendered HTML. Enqueueing the framework does not convert an existing theme’s markup automatically. Replace or extend the relevant template markup, then inspect the front-end output to confirm the classes survived any WordPress filters or page-builder processing.
Make interactive components work
Use the bundle when Popper is needed
Dropdowns, popovers, and tooltips need positioning logic. Bootstrap’s official quick-start material provides a JavaScript bundle that includes Popper. Enqueuing that bundle, rather than a JavaScript file that omits its dependency, is the simplest way to satisfy those components.

A dropdown trigger and menu still need Bootstrap’s expected attributes and class names in the HTML. Follow the component’s documentation for the exact markup and data attributes for the Bootstrap release you pinned. If the button appears but the menu never opens, first verify that the bundle is present once, that the trigger markup matches the selected release, and that no JavaScript error stops execution earlier on the page.
Do not load competing copies
Loading Bootstrap through the theme and again through a plugin or page builder can produce unpredictable behavior. Search the rendered page source and browser network panel for duplicate Bootstrap CSS and JavaScript requests. Remove the extra enqueue at its source when possible; do not try to repair duplicate loading with arbitrary delays or repeated initialization code.
Initialize only when the component requires it
Bootstrap’s data attributes can activate many components without custom initialization. If your project uses JavaScript initialization, place that code after the Bootstrap bundle in the dependency chain rather than relying on a timing assumption. A custom script can declare mytheme-bootstrap-bundle as a dependency so WordPress prints it afterward.
Keep custom CSS predictable
Put site-specific rules in the theme stylesheet that depends on Bootstrap. Avoid editing the CDN file or a vendor copy directly: every version change would overwrite those edits, and the framework would become difficult to update.
Override deliberately
Start with Bootstrap’s utility classes and component options. When a design needs a custom rule, give it a selector that is specific enough to win against the framework but not so specific that future maintenance becomes difficult. Keep overrides near one another and comment the component or design decision they address.

Account for the parent theme
A parent theme may already enqueue its own stylesheet after Bootstrap or may define styles that win by specificity. Inspect the final order in the page source. If your child stylesheet is not last, declare the correct dependency on the handle used by the parent theme, or enqueue your override file with dependencies that place it after both Bootstrap and the parent CSS. Do not assume file names alone determine order; WordPress orders registered handles and their dependencies.
Use local Bootstrap files or a build pipeline
The same WordPress code works when the URLs point to files inside the theme. A local compiled-file pattern uses get_theme_file_uri():

If you compile Bootstrap from source Sass or JavaScript, make the build output reproducible and deploy the generated files before changing the enqueue URLs. A build pipeline can also produce a project-specific CSS bundle, but the WordPress side still needs stable handles, dependencies, and versions.
Load assets only where they are needed
Loading Bootstrap globally is simplest and often appropriate for a theme whose templates all use its classes. If only a specific template family uses Bootstrap, you can conditionally enqueue assets with WordPress’s conditional tags inside the callback. For example, a theme might load a page-specific file only when is_page_template() matches a known template.
Keep the condition easy to understand and test every affected URL. A conditional that is too narrow can leave a navigation component unstyled; one that is too broad removes the performance benefit. Bootstrap’s core CSS and JavaScript should still be enqueued before any custom file that depends on them.
Troubleshoot the common failures

Verify the integration before publishing
- Open the front end, not only the WordPress administration screens.
- Inspect the generated HTML and confirm that the Bootstrap CSS, theme CSS, and Bootstrap bundle requests appear once each.
- Check that the theme stylesheet request follows the Bootstrap stylesheet request.
- Confirm the Bootstrap version in each URL matches the version argument in the enqueue calls.
- Test a responsive container, grid row, form control, and button at narrow and wide viewport widths.
- Test every interactive component the theme uses, including dropdowns, tooltips, and popovers, while watching the browser console.
- Open pages that use conditional templates and pages that do not, ensuring neither group loses required assets.
- Test with the parent theme update process in mind: activate the child theme and confirm that your enqueue code and overrides remain present.
Plan upgrades and maintenance
Bootstrap CDN examples are version-specific. A URL that worked for 5.0.2 will not automatically move to a later release, and an unpinned URL makes the asset version less explicit. Select a supported release, update both CSS and JavaScript references, update the numeric version arguments, and review component markup for that release before deployment.
Keep one documented source of truth for the selected version and delivery method. If the project moves from CDN to local files, preserve the same handles where practical so dependent theme code does not needlessly change. If handles must change, update every dependency that references them.

When debugging an upgrade, change one variable at a time: first confirm the new CSS loads, then the bundle, then interactive components, and finally custom overrides. This separates an asset-delivery problem from a markup or compatibility problem.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Pasting stylesheet and script tags into templates instead of using
wp_enqueue_scripts. - Using generic handles such as
bootstrapthat can collide with another plugin or theme. - Loading the theme stylesheet without a Bootstrap dependency, so override order becomes accidental.
- Using a JavaScript file without Popper while expecting positioned components to work.
- Enqueuing both CDN and local copies during a migration.
- Changing the URL version but leaving the enqueue version unchanged, or doing the reverse.
- Editing vendor CSS directly instead of keeping overrides in the theme stylesheet.
- Putting integration code only in a parent theme when the site will receive parent-theme updates.
- Testing only the homepage and overlooking templates loaded conditionally.
The practical implementation pattern
For most themes, the durable pattern is short: choose and record a Bootstrap release, enqueue its CSS on wp_enqueue_scripts, enqueue the theme stylesheet with a dependency on Bootstrap, enqueue the Bootstrap bundle in the footer, and keep all project-specific rules in the theme or child theme. Use Bootstrap classes in templates, verify the final asset order, and troubleshoot interactive components by checking the bundle, Popper, markup, and console errors in that order.
